Description

L. A. DUPRE.
Cloth-Holders for Sewing-Machines.
No, 140,406, Patentedluly 1,l873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS ALADIN'DUPRE, OF DONALDSONVILLE, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH-HOLDERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,406, dated July 1, 1873 application filed May 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lonrs A. DUPRE, of Donaldsonville, in the parish of Ascension and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OlothHolder, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 represents the same before being bent into shape. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a neat, simple, and convenient device for holding cloth while being sewed upon a sewingmachine, to avoid the necessity of basting the work before sewing it.
The invention consists of the device formed of a strip of thin sheet-steel, made wider at one end and narrower at the other end, having a single bent point at its narrower end,
two bent points at its wider end, and a short slot in its wider end, and bent so that its narrower end may be passed through the slot in its wider end, and the two ends may project parallel with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents my device, which is cut out of thin sheet-steel into the shape shown in Fig. 2. One end of the strip of steel is made wider than the other end, and the narrower end is pointed. The wider end of the strip is also pointed and then notched, thus forming two points at one end and one point at the other end. The strip of steel is then bent and the narrow end is passed through a short slot formed in the wider part until the two ends are parallel and even with each other. The points are bent inward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, into the form of claws, the single point being opposite to and shutting into the notch between the two points, so that when applied to the cloth it will keep in place and hold the said cloth securely. By slightly compressing the bend of the device it may be readily applied to and detached from the cloth. 7
In using the device it should be applied to the cloth two, three, or four inches apart, as circumstances may require.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The device A, consisting of a strip of thin sheet'steel made wider at one end and narrower at the other end, having a single bent point at its narrower end, two bent points at its wider end, and a short slot in its wider end, and bent so that its narrower end may be passed through the slot in its wider end, and the two ends may project parallel with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
LOUIS ALADIN DUPRE.
