LIFTIN G DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
Application filed April 16, 1921. Serial No. 461,927.
To all whom it may concern} 7 Be it known that L'Jorix JOLLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hutchinson, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to alifting device, particularly adapted for removing plates or sections from an electrical storage battery.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character by which a section of a storage battery including the usual positive plate assembly and negative plate assembly may be lifted from the battery jar in an expeditious manner without injury to the plates.
Other objects and objects relating to de tails of construction, combination and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to follow.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
'Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lifting device as when in operation,
Figure 2 is aperspective view of theliftin device, v
*igure 3 is a front elevation of the lifting device as when in operation,
Figure at is a top plan view of the support for the lifting device, said support being positioned upon a storage battery,
Figure 5 is a cross section taken substantially on the lines 55 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, A indicates generally a battery casing or box, said battery being of the usual six volt type, and consisting of the usual three.
sections, 10, 11 and 12, each section having each pair being connected with a positive plate assembly while the other is connected plate assembly in a manner well known.
The plates are of course held within a hard rubber jar in the usual manner, and the sections 10, 11 and 12 are covered with the usual insulating compound. In carrying out my invention I provide a pair of base members 17 and 18 each of which has extended from a central point thereof a vertical member 19. The member 17 is also formed with a pair of end members 20 extended at right angles therefrom and from the upper edge thereof, as shown. Each member is provided with a central longitudinal slot 21, and the base member 18 is provided with a pair of studs 22 one at each end thereof, which are adapted to be slidingly positioned in the slots 21 of the cross members 20. Each stud is threaded and provided with a wing nut 23, by which the members 21 may be clamped to the base member '18.
Between the upper ends of the members 19 there is suitably journaled a shaft 24, said shaft having a crank arm 25 and a handle 26 formed therewith, by which the same may be manually rotated. The shaft is held against longitudinal movement by means of a pair of collars, as indicated at 27, and the portion between the members 19 carries a winding drum 28. The collars 27 are adjustably held by set screws, as shown, and thus permitting the members 19 to be moved outwardly or inwardly corresponding to the movement permissible by the members 20. The drum 28 has attached at its longitudinal center the one end of a chain 29, said chain being attached by the means of an eye bolt 30,- and said eye bolt being threaded through the drum and into the shaft 24, as shown in Figure 5, thereby holding the drum against movement with respect to the said shaft.
With the lower end link of the chain 29, there is connected a clevis 30, the pin 31 of which extends through an opening at the longitudinal center of the beam 32. On each end of the beam 32 there is pivotally connected a clevis 33, said clevises each having suspended therefrom a pair of tongs as generally indicated at 34, each of said pair of tongs being connected byv its respective clevis through the means of a pair of chains 35 and a ring 36, as shown. e jaws 37 of each pair of tongs are formed with a V-shaped recess as at 38, the purpose of which will later appear.
In the operation of the present device, the two base members 17 and 18 are positioned upon the battery as shown in Figure 4. The base members extend transversely of the battery and the distance between said members is adjusted by the means of the Wing nuts 23, so that they straddle a section of the battery. Different types of storage batteries have sections which vary in width and consequently the means for adjusting the distance between the base members 17 and 18 is of an advantage. The compound is of course removed about the section to be lifted so that it is free to slide from the rubber jar within which it is' en closed. The beam 32 is then lowered and the tongs 34 attached to the connecting posts 13, the V-shaped recesses 38 formed in the jaws 37 permitting the jaws to secure a tight grip upon the connecting posts 13 when the beam 32 is lifted, and the jaws 37 are closed. By rotating the crank 25, the battery section with which the tongs are connected may be lifted from the battery jar in an easy, manner. The fact that the pull on the tongs 84' is balanced by the beam 32 permits the positive and negative plate assemblies of the battery section to be evenly lifted from the battery jar and thus eliminating the danger of injuring said assemblies; 7 Y
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I wish it to'be understood that I am aware of the fact that the bonstruction, combination and arrangement of parts may be changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention, as indicated by .the appended claims.
-l.- A lifting device of the character de scribed, comprising" a pair of base members, a pair of cross bars formed on one of said members, means by'which said cross bars may be adjustably connected with the other base member for varying the distance between said base members, a vertical support extending from each base member, a
shaft carrying a winding drum journaled between the upper ends of said supports,
said shaft being adapted to permit outward movement of the supports with respectto the drum, adjustable means by which the having its one end attached to said drum,
means by which a load may be attached to said chain, and means byfwhich the distance between the supports may be adjusted.
3. In a lifting device of the character described, comprising a pair-of base members, a pair of cross'bars formed on one of said base members, each having a longitudinally extending slot, a pair of studs formed upon the other base member, one near each end thereof and adapted to slide within the slots of said cross bars, a wing nut by which said cross bars may be adjustably held, a vertical support extending from each base member, ashaft carrying a winding'drum journaled between the upper ends of said supports, said shaft'being adapted to permit outward movement of the supports, a chain connected with said winding drum,
means by which a load may be connected to said chain and crank means by which said drum may be manually rotated;
