RUDOLPH C. HARTLEB AND THOMAS J. LEVEY, OF CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND. ASSIGNORS TO THE CAMBRIDGE MECHANICAL TOY 00., OF CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND, A CORPORATION OF MARYLAND,
FIGURE WHEELED 'rorv Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
Application filed February 12, .1921. Serial No. 444,451.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUnoLrrrC. IIART- LEB and THOMAS J. Lnvnr, citizens of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Dorchester and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure \Vheeled Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to a wheel toy adapted to be drawn or pushed embodying figures actuated by the rotation of the wheel thereof and moved alternately to hidden and discovered positions.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which 1S extremely cheap in construction and the parts of which are so formed that they are not readily destroyed in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide in combination with a toy of the above character means for simultaneously actuating the figures and a clapper of some other form of audible amusement device.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of our invention, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal view taken through a toy constructed in accordance with our invention;
Figure 2 is asimilar section of a somewhat modified form of our invention;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a section on the line l-4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the body frame and the numerals 11 and 12 pairs of supporting wheels secured to their respective axles 11 and 12 and havingthese axles rotatably mounted in the body frame.
' At each end of the body frame is arranged a box-like structure 13 having an open upper end normally closed by a hinged cover Judy Show as the toy is moved.
14. Arranged within each of the receptacles 13 is a figure toy 15 represented in the present instance heads of the Punch and Judy order facing toward one another and having the upper surfaces of the head portions or upper ends thereof arcuatcly curved for a purpose presently to appear. These figure toys 15 secured to the upper ends of vertically reciprocable supports 16 slidably mounted in the body portion 10 and extending therethrough.
Depending from the bodyportion approx imately centrally thereof is a standard 17 upon which is pivotally mounted at its approximate center a lever 18. The axle 11 is secured against shifting with relation to the body portion 10 and is provided therebeneath with a crank 19 which is connected with the lever 18 by means of a link 20 so that the lever 18 is oscillated when the wheels 11 are rotated. The ends of the lever 18 are secured to the lower ends of the vertically reciprocable supports 16 to actuate the same.
The forward axle 12 has secured thereto at its approximate center a ratchet wheel 22. A handle mounting 23 is provided for a handle H and may be either secured directly to the body portion 10, as shown in Figure 1, or the front axle assembly, including the wheels 12, axle 12 and handle support 23, may be mounted upon a fifth wheel, as shown in Figure 2. To this handle support is secured in any suitable manner, as for example by riveting, one end of a spring 24, the opposite end of which has secured thereto a clapper 25 which extends into the path of the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
In the operation of the device. when the toy is drawn or pushed, the rotation of the wheels 11 causes the oscillation of the lever and, accordingly. the figure toys 15 are alternately elevated and depressed. Because of the curvature appliedto the upper end or head structure of the toys, their engagement with their covers 14 is such that it does not cause the covers to apply to the heads an undue battering action tending to break the same. The heads being alte-r nately elevated and depressed give somewhat of the appearance of the Punch and Simultaneously the rotation of the forward wheels 12 and of the axle 12 causes the ratchet wheel 22 to actuate the clapper 25 providing an audible signal. 7
From the foregoing it will be obvious that we have constructed a toy which is particularly well adapted for use in that it,
is of such construction that it may not be 7 readily destroyed by children in their play,
and by reason of the fact that it will afford suitable amusement both from the bobbing effect of the figures and from the audible signal. It will likewise be obvious that the construction of the same, as hereinbefore set forth, is capable of some change without materially departing from the spirit of our invention. \Ve, accordingly, do not limit-ourselves to such specific structure, except as hereinafter claimed.
What we claim is:
In a device of the type described, a platform apertured adjacent each end and having depending bearing brackets, axles rotatably mounted in said brackets, supporting Wheels secured to said axles, a receptacle mounted upon the upper surface of said platform adjacent each end thereof and in which the aperture is centrally disposed, said receptacles having open tops a' hinged cover for each of said receptacles, a'bearing .yoke depending from the platform intermediate the bearing brackets, a lever pivoted upon said yoke, standards pivotally and slidably connected with the ends of 'said lever, said standards being slidably mounted in the apertures of the platform,
toy figures carried at-the upper end of the
