Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTHA E. WILSON AND ALBERT J. PERRY, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS SAID PERRY ASSIGNOR TO SAID WILSON.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTING AND PLAITING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,331, dated June 24, 1873 application filed April 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARTHA E. WILSON and ALBERT J. PERRY, of Galesburg, county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Fluting and Plaitin g Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention relates to improvements in machinery for producing, from suitable cloth, that class of articles known in the trade as standard trimmings, and con sisting of various styles of tluting and plaiting; and the invention consists in the arrangement of clamping-bars on a bed-plate or base, having their adjacent edges rabbeted for the better security of the tinting-rods and plaitingslats, and one of them attached in such manner t0 the base that it may be readily and easily swung out of the way for any desired purpose, both clamping-bars being made adjustable to the base, for different kinds of trimmings, by suitable spacing-slats and screwbolts. It further consists in the arrangement I of an adjustable clamp for securing the rods or the plaiting-slats when the work is suspended at any time, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1 on the line as or; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 31 3 Referring to the parts by letters, letter-A represents the base, consisting of a plain rectangular board. Letters B B represent the I clamping-bars, with rabbets b b on their adjacent lower edges, and adjustably secured to the base A by screw-bolts O O U C. The bar B is transversely slotted for the reception of the bolt 0, as shown at c, Fig. l. D D are spacing-bars. Letters 6 represent tinting-rods, and letters 9 plaiting-slats. H H H are jaws or projections from, and at one end of, the bed-plate A. I is an adjustable bar, by means of a screw-bo1t,i, through a slot, j, therein, and has a foot turned up at its inner end.
In the drawings the fluting-rods and plaiting-slats are shown as arranged to produce the various styles of trimmings, such as boxplaiting, fluting, horizontal kilt-plaiting, and inclined kilt-plaiting. In inclined kilt-plaiting, where it is desired to arrange the plaits nearly perpendicular, and in any other style requiring deeper work, any number of slats or spacing-bars D may be inserted to adjust the distance of the clamping-bars B B from the base A. Y
In operation, the work is commenced at the left-hand end of Fig. 1, and the slats g or rods 0 may, after being properly encircled, or partly encircled, by the cloth L to be'operated upon, then be turned diagonally with the base A, to be slipped into place with their ends resting in the rabbets b b; or the bar B may be thrown back, as shown by the dotted lines at Fig. l, by simply loosening the screwbolt 0 and turning the bar on the screw-bolt O as a pivot, and allow the fluting-rods and plaiting-bars to be arranged with the cloth. The adjustablejaw I may be used to hold the fluting-rods or plaiting-slats, or both, between it and the stationaryjaws H, while the Work or cloth is ironed to set it, or when the work is suspended at any time. The bolt C may be swung into position shown by the dotted lines at Fig. l to remove the work, which is done by placing the left hand upon the cloth and withdrawing the fluting-rods or quillingslats with the right hand. The advantages against longitudinal displacement of the fluting-rods and plaiting-slats, by th ir ends resting in the rabbets b b, are too evident to need on u meration.
I claim 1. The clamping-bars B B, having rabbeted edges 1) b, in combination with the screws (J G '0, base A, and fluting-rods e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The clamping-bar B, provided with the slot 0, in combination with the screw-bolts G 0, base A, and fiuting-rods c. substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The clamping-jaw 1, adj ustably arranged to hold the tinting-rods e, in combination with the jaws H, base A, and bars B B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
MARTHA E. WILSON. ALBERT J. PERRY. Witnesses:
