Description
L. D.\WUODMANSEE.
Luather-Per'foratingr Machinery for Harness-Makers. Ng 145,543, Patented Demi-6,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO D. VOODMANSEE, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER PERFORATING MACHINERY FOR HARNESS MAKERS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 145.5113, dated December 16, 1873; application filed June 30, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that` I, LORENZO D. WOOD- MANsEE, of Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Perforating Leather and other materials for sewing;
` and I do hereby declare that the following is gate, which is provided with a row of awls, in
combination with a frame, lever, and a guide for'the work, as hereinafter described.
Figure l represents a vertical section of my perforating -machinel Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, with a portion of the frame broken away to exhibit the interior construction.
The frame, which may be made of cast-iron, is rectangular, and has an open front and top. The awl stock or gate B is provided with the row of awls a, and has .the hole O made through it for the hand-lever D to freely work in. Grooves are formed on the opposite inner sides of the fra-meAto guide the gate B in its verticallyreciprocating motion. The bottom of the frame is perforated with holes b b, corresponding with the row of awls a, and a feedpassage, P, is made through the bottom ofthe frame, intersecting the holes b b, in which passage the work to be pertorated is to be placed and adjusted. A suitable opening, X, is made through the rear side of the frame for the end of the lever D, by which the awl-stock is raised and depressed by the hand of the workman.
The feed-passage P may be provided with adjustable sides, so that it can be contracted and expanded by the use of set-screws, so as to guide work of various widths.
Leather, such as is cut into strips for traces, tugs, &c., for harnesses, may be placed in the passage P and perforated, preparatory to sewing by hand.
The stock B is caused to move up and down by means of hand-lever D, and the aW1s,which are arranged in line with the feed-passage I), will be thrust through the leather placed therein; and, at each upward movement of the stock and awls, the latter will be withdrawn, and the leather will be fed through the passage a` sufficient distance to repeat the operation.
The perforations will be uniformly made, and the stitching can be done rapidly and neatly.
It is apparent that a series of aWl-stocks having diierent sizes of awls, spaced for ne or coarser work, maybe used interchangeably in the same frame.
I cla-im as my invention-- In a leather-perforating machine, the arrangement of the reciprocating stock B, provided with a series ot' awls, and a guide, I), within the frame A, the bottom of said frame being provided with holes b b, substantially as shown, for the purpose described.
fitness my hand this 7th day of J une, A. D. 1873.
L. D. WTOODMANSEE.
IVitnesses:
H. P. K. PEOK, JOHN M. DAVIDSON.
