I UNITED STATES CHARLES E. BOLTON AND MATTHEW RANKIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PAPER-BOX MACHINERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,599, dated September 11, 1883,
Application filed August 30,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES EDWARD BOLTON and MATTHEW RANKIN, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Box Machinery; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertainsto make anduse it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in paper-box machines; and it consists in a certain construction and combination of parts, as will hereinafter be described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side View of our device. Fig. 2 is a plan View. Fig.3 is a plan view of the blank before it is operated upon by this machine, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the sameafter the blank, has been operated upon by this machine. Fig. 5 is a detached vertical sectional view through the guides, showing the manner of adjustment. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blades of the knives, showing the manner of out they make upon the blank.
In the said drawings, A represents any suitable frame adapted to hold and support the operative portions of our device. Said frame is provided with a longitudinal dovetail groove, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive the pitman D.
B represents a table upon which the blanks are placed.
0 represents a head, removably attached to the pitman Dby one or more bolts, A, passing through a lug 0r flange, a, of the head 0, and into the lower end, M, of the pitman D. This head 0 is provided with knives or cutters 0 upon either side. The pitman D may be readily removed from the frame by first removing the head 0 from the pitman and sliding the latter out of its dovetail connection with the frame. 7
E E are guides adapted to fit the corners of the blanks, and also made adjustable by means of the set-screws F, which in turn are provided with thumb-nuts,'so that the guides E may be readily adjusted to conform to different-sized blanks placed upon the table B. The head 0 being also removable, any other head with knives further or less extended and adapted to cut larger or smaller blanks may be substituted and attached to the pitman D, so that our machine is adaptedto operate upon a large number of different-sized blanks.
G G are guideways extending from the rear corners of the table and converging toward the center. These guideways G G are providedwith guide-blocks H, adapted to traverse in the guideways, and to which the guides E are adj ustably attached.
Having thus described the construction of our device, its operation is as follows: The blank, as shown in Fig. 3, is formed in a separate machine. It is now placed'upon the table B, the guides E adjusted to fit the size of the blank upon its corners I and K. The pitman D is given a reciprocating movement, either by means of a crank or eccentric, when the knives c descend and cut from the blank the portions L and N shown in Fig. 4, and also out theslits Z Z and m m.
If it is desired to cut a different-sized blank from that first used, either larger or smaller,
the-head O is removed and one of proper size substituted, the guides E E are adjusted to fit the blank, and the machine is ready to per form its work upon that particular size.
What we claim is- In a paper-box machine, the combination,- with a table provided with dovetailed guideways G G, extending from the rear corners of the table convergently toward its center, of the guide-blocks H, set-screws F, and guides E, provided with elongated slots, whereby the set-screws F serve for the independent adjustment of the guide-blocks and guides, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed on names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. BOLTON. MATTHEW RANKIN.
