HORACE INMAN AND FRANK M. JOSLIN, OF AMSTERDAM, YORK, ASSIGNORS TO INMAN MANUFACTURING COMPANY. INCORPORATED, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK,
A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ADJUSTABLE TRAY-MAKING MAGI-IIN E.
Application filed July 29, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HORACE INMAN and FRANK M. JosLiN, citizens of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Adjustable Tray-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable machines for making paper box'trays and more particularly to the cross scoring and dieing mechanism thereof.
The objects of the invention are to provide a machine of this character which-is readily adjustable to make box trays of different sizes, and which is simple in construction and efiicient in operation.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete box making machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevation of a detail; Fig. 7 is a plan view of one of the parts shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a fragmentary end elevation of Fig. 6; Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 4; Fig. 10 is a section on the line 1010 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 11 is a plan of the web for making the box blanks and showing the manner in which the blanks are formed.
Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the machine comprises a frame A, on which are supported a longitudinal scoring and feeding mechanism B, a dieing and cross scoring mechanism C, pasting mechanism D and a forming mechanism E.
The subject-matter of the present invention being limited to the dieing and cross scoring mechanism C, this mechanism will now be described in detail. Arranged below the frame A and supported in suitable bearings are the shafts and 21 which carry at their outer ends the eccentrics 22.. Secured. to the sideof the :frame A. are uprights 24 which are se- Specification of Letters Patent.

cured together at their tops by means of rods 25 extending longitudinally and transversely of the machine. Arranged to slide up and down on the rods 24 is a frame 26 which is provided on its inner side with the longitudinally extending ribs 27. The ribs 27 engage suitable grooves 28 at the ends of cross beams 29, whereby the cross beams are adapted to move up and down with the frame 26 and are also adapted to be adjusted longitudinally of the machine.
The frame A supports a bed plate 30, on which are mounted the die carriers 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35. The bed plate is provided at its opposite sides with racks 36 and on one side with a scale 37 which cooperates with the indices 38 on the die carriers to indicate the relative positions of the die carriers and also facilitate adjustment of the latter. Each of the die carriers 31, 32, 33, 34 and is provided with a shaft 39 extending transversely of the machine and provided at its ends with the pinions 40 which engage the racks 36. The ends of the shafts are also provided with angular portions 41 which are adapted to receive a wrench or other device for rotating the shafts. By this construction the rotation of the shafts 39 causes the die carriers to be moved longitudinally. Each of the die carriers 31 and 34 is provided with a T-slot 42 extending longitudinally thereof parallel with the shaft 39 for a purpose to be described later.
Arranged on the die carriers 32 and 33 are the cross scoring dies which consists essentially of a bar 43 which has secured thereto the plate 44, the upper edge of which cooperates'with the groove 45 in the lower side of the upper die 46. The carriers 32 and 33 are provided with upright guide rods 47 which engage suitable openings in the upper die 46 and maintain the latter in alinement with the lower die. The upper die is provided with the upwardly extending brackets 48 through which passes the shaft 49, this shaft being provided at its ends with the eccentric trunnions 50 which are ar--- ranged in suitable openings in the cross beams 29. The brackets 48 are preferably.
split, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby they are adapted to be clamped to the shaft 49 by means of the bo1ts-51. The shaft 49 may also be provided with a handle 52, which is secured to the shaft by means of a split sleeve 53 and a clamping bolt 54. By the arrangement just described it will be seen that the upper die 46 is carried by the frame 26 and therefore will move up and down with the frame. In order to adjust the die 46 for different thicknesses of web the shaft 49 is provided with the eccentric trunnions 50 so that when it is desired to change the stroke of the die 46 it is only necessary to loosen the bolts 51 and turn the shaft 49 to the desired amount by means of the handle 52 and then tighten the bolts '51 to secure the parts in their adjusted position.
The carriers 31 and 34 support the dies which cut away portions of the blank to form the sealing flaps a shown in Fig. 10. These dies consist essentially of a plate 55, to which is bolted the plates 56 forming the T-slot 57. The plate 55 is provided with an upright extension 58, having a hand hole 59 and supporting at its top a bracket 60 which is secured to the portion 58 by means of suitable bolts 61. Arrangedto slide in the sleeves 62, carried by the bracket 60, are the rods 63 which are secured to the hubs 63 on the plate 64, this plate constituting the head of the male die. Secured to the plate 64 are the angle bars 65, 66'and 67. Arranged between the bars 65 and 66 is a cutting die or punch 68 and secured to the bar 67 at the end of the die 68 is a cutting die or punch 69, thesedies'being arranged in the form of a T and cooperating with the T-slot 57. The upper ends of'the rods 63 are provided with the heads 7 0 which engage a slot 71 extendinglongitudinally of the cross beam 29.
The plate 55 is preferably secured to the die carrier by means of a bolt 72, having a T-head 73 which engages the T-slot 42, thus permitting the dies to be adjusted transversely of the machine, the head 73 of the bolt 72 sliding in the T-slot 42 and the head 7 O of the rod 63 sliding .in the slot 71.
It will be observed that all of the parts comprising the dies just described are secured in position" on the "die carriers 'by means of a single bolt 72. In order to secure proper alinement of the dies the carrier may be'provided on its'upper side with a groove 74, which is engaged by a rib 75 on the lower side of the plate 55, this rib preferably extending from one side of the plate to the other.
Arranged on the die carrier 35 is a plate 7 6, having at its ends the upright guiderods 77, these rods engaging suitable openings in the die head 78. The die head 7 8 is provided with the'upwardly extending brackets 79 in Which'are-arranged pins '80, each of which is provided with a trunnion'81 "Whichengages a suitable openingin the crossbeam which supports the die head. The'""pins*'80 may be secured in position by means of set screws 82. The die head 78 carries a punch 83, which may be adjustably secured to the die head in any suitable manner, asby means of a split hub 84, secured to the die head by means of bolts and provided with a clamping bolt 86. The punch 83 coeperates with a suitable opening in a plate 87, carried by the bar 76, to form the hole I) in the box blank, as shown in Fig. 11.
The arrangement of the dies above described permits of their universal adjustment longitudinally and transversely of the machine and owing to the fact that the upper dies are connectedwith the frame 26 it will be seen that all of the dies will be moved simultaneously. The web of paper is fed intermittently through the machine and the cutting dies and cross scorers come into operation when the web is stationary.
Referring to Fig. 11, it will be seen that the dies cooperate to produce a blank ready to be folded. The dies on the carriers 31 and 32 form respectively the cuts 0 and the cross score Z. After the dies havebeen raised out of engagement with the web the latter is moved forward a distance equal to the dis tance between the cuts 0 and the cuts 0. On the next descent of the dies the dies on the carriers 33 and 34 form respectively the cross score 6 and the cuts f, shown in dotted lines, thus producing the openings 9." In forming the openings 9 the longitudinal cutting dies on the carrier 34 slightly overlap the cuts made by the'dies on the carrier 31 so that by this arrangement of the dies it'is possible to form blanks for trays having heights varying from one-half of. the'length of one of the longitudinal cutting dies to the full length thereof. 'When it is desired to form boxes either'larger or smaller than these sizes it is only necessary to provide different cutting dies. The opening I) is for the purpose of providing a thumb opening in the completed box. The shafts 20 and 21 are geared together in any suitablemanner, so that they will rotate in unison.
