IMPROVEMENT l N PAPER-BOX MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,872, dated March 19, 1872.
Specification describing a DoubleOorner Cutting-Machine for Paper-Boxes, invented by J OSEPH WoRnLL, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.
My invention consists of a movable die and cutter in addition to the ordinary permanent The said movable die and cutter are connected with a slide which is combined and arranged with a horizontal slide that is operated by a treadle mechanism, which gives the requisite motion to the cutters; or, the treadle may be dispensed with and the machine run by steam or other motive power. The slide, with which the movable die and cutter are connected, is operated by a horizontal screw,
- connected with the said slide, which carries the permanent cutter, to vary the position of the movable die and cutter to suit difi'erent sizes of boxes or lids. The table is provided with gauges operated by screw-rods for regulating the position of the boxes and lids to be cornered.
The following is a detailed description of the machine.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved machine. Fig.2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3, Plate 2, is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 4: is a horizontal section at the line a b of Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are a plan and side elevation of the slide E. Figs 7, 8, and 9 are a top view, side elevation,
and end view of the slide 0 and G and cutterbar G. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the slides G and O, the former being provided with a die, B. Like letters same parts.
A is the table, with which the several parts of the machine are connected. B is a permanent die, at the right-hand end of the table, and B a movable die in line with the same in the slide 0, which moves in a horizontal groove, on. The slide 0 has a permanent connection by means of the upright D with the horizontal slide 0', that moves in the slide E,
in all the figures indicate the which has a perpendicular movement at its ends in the vertical guidestrips F F and F F at the ends of the table. G is a vertical bar, connected with the slide E and in range with the permanent die B. The lower end of the bar is provided with the cutter H, which operates, in conjunction with the die B, for cut ting one corner of the box or lid. G is a vertical bar connection with the slide 0, which has, in connection with its lower end, a cutter, H, which operates in conjunction with the die B in cutting the other corner at the same edge of the box or lid. The combined slide 0 G is adjustable endwise by means of the horizontal screw-rod I,represented in Figs. 1 and 3, so as to regulate the distance between the dies 13 and B and the cutters H and H to suit different sizes of boxes or lids. J J J are gauges for the adjustment of the boxes or lids to be cornered; their slides K K K are guided by the grooves 11 b b in the top of the table A. The said. gauges are provided with adjusting screw-rods L L L. M is a treadle, for operating the cutters H and H. It is connected with the rocking-shaft N by means of the vertical rod 0 and arm Q of the shaft. The shaft is connected with the vertical slide E by means of its arms Q Q and vertical rods 0 O. i
When the machine is operated by steam or other motive power the treadle is dispensed with and the connection made in any convenient manner with the rocking-shaft N.
I claim as my invention.
1. The adjustable die B and cutter H in connection with the slide 0 0, arranged and operating in relation to the die B and cutter H for cutting two corners of a box or lid at one operation, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the slide 0 O and horizontal screw-rod I with the slide E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: JOSEPH WORELL.
