TOOL FOR CUTTING OR SCORING CARDBOARD.

To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that we, EMIL SALTZKORN and LUDWIG NIOOLAI, subjects of the King of Saxony, residing at Dresden, in the Empire of Germany, have invented acertain new and Improved Tool for Cutting or Scoring Cardboard, &c., (for which we have obtained Letters Patent as follows: in Great Britain August 9, 1892, No. 14,379; in France July 30, 1892, No. 223,357; in Belgium July 30, 1892, No. 100,751; in Germany, No. 67,784, dated July 20, 1892, and in Austria-Hungary,No. 9,712 and No. 25,371, dated July 4, 1893,) of
The object of our invention is to provide a tool for cutting or scoring cardboard, &c., and this object we attain in the manner more fully set forth hereinafter, reference being had to the accompaying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation of a cutting tool constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the cutting tool and clamping bar, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the knife carriage and its knife.
Our invention aims principally at the production of a tool which may be operated by hand to cut or score a groove or depression, or a number of grooves or depressions, in a sheet of card or paperboard such as is commonly used in the manufacture of what are known as paper boxes, and in application for Letters Patent filed by us on the 23d of March,
1893, Serial No. 467,283, is described a paper box made from out or scored paperboard of the character which this tool is more espe-- cially designed to produce. The tool, however,
may be employed for the cutting, grooving or scoring of other and dilferent materials employed in the manufacture of, paper boxes, or other analogous purposes.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a bed plate of any suitable size and contour having a smooth fiat upper surface formed either on the bed plate itself or on a separate plate securedthereto. Near each end of the bed plate is a vertical post 2, to the upper ends of which are secured supportingbearings 4 for a longitudinal shaft 3, which shaft is provided near each end with an eccentric 1], and at a lower edge to the eccentrics 11,are eccentric extension bars 12, provided with straps encircling the eccentrics and so arranged that when the shaft 3, is partially rotated by the operator the eccentrics will force the clamping bar toward the bed plate against the action of the springs 6, and firmly press upon the bed plate the sheet of cardboard, or other material to be operated upon, the pressure exerted through the eccentrics being sufficient to firmly hold the sheet of material in position during the subsequent grooving, cutting or scoring oper ation.
On one side of the clamping bar, 7, are dovetailed guideways 13, extending parallel to the lower edge of the clamping bar. Adapted to such guideways is a carriage 8, provided with an operating handle 14, by which it may be moved along the length of the clamping bar. The latter is provided near, each end with spring stops 9, extending into the path of the carriage and adapted to gradually check its movement as it nears the end of the guideways.

vertical position of which may be adjusted by the cutting, scoring or grooving blade 17,*the
lower operating edge of which extends for a distance below the lower edge of the presser bar dependent upon the depth of the groove or cut to be made in the material upon the bed plate; the depth of the groove being altered at pleasure by adjusting the vertical position of the plate, 15, on the carriage, 8. The cutting, grooving or scoring edge of the knife 17, is preferably similar to that described in Letters Patent granted to us on the 16th day of December, 1890, No. 442,738, and is de- :00
signed to cut a V-shaped groove, or score a V- shaped depression in the sheet of material to be acted upon, although it will be understood that in this invention we do not limit ourselves to the particular construction of knife or cutting tool employed, as any other suitable form of tool may be attached to the plate 15, as will be readily understood. It is also clear that the plate 15, intervening between the blade 17, and the carriage 8, may be dispensed with and the blade 17, adj ustably secured directly to the carriage in a similar manner. 7
In operation, the sheet of material to be acted upon is placed upon the bed plate and by turning the handle, 10, on the eccentric shaft 3, the clamping bar is forced down upon the sheet confining it tothe bed plate. The knife carriage 8, has, previous to this clamping, been moved to the left hand end of the clamping bar and after the clamping is offected the carriage carrying the knife blade is forced along the guideways, 13, to the op posite end of such bar, causing the operating edge of the knife to cut or score the sheet. To release the sheet after this operation the handle, 10, is turned in the opposite direction and the clamping bar is raised by the springs 6.-
It will be understood the clamping bar may, if necessary, be so connected to the eccentrics as to be raised directly by the eccentrics in lieu of being raised by the action of the springs, 6, and the springs in such case may then be dispensed with.
Other similar modifications of our invention will readily suggest themselves, such for instance, as the substitution of a device acting directly on the clamping bar to depress the same, as a screw or a cam lever mounted in a bearing above the clamping bar and provided with a cam adapted to act directly upon the latter.
Having thus described ourinvention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- 1. The combination of the bed plate, vertical guiding posts secured thereto, a clamping bar carried and guided by said guiding posts, vertical supporting springs provided upon said guiding posts between the clamping bar and the bed plate, longitudinally disposed guiding rails provided upon the front face of the clamping bar, a knife carriage adapted to such guiding rails a scoring tool secured to such knife carriage, and mechanism for raising, lowering and locking the clamping bar carried by said guiding posts above the clamping bar consisting of a horizontally disposed shaft carried in bearing blocks on said guiding posts, eccentrics secured to such shaft and eccentric extension bars connecting the eccentrics with the clamping bar at or near its base and handle provided upon said shaft for operating the same, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a bed plate 1, the posts 2, provided thereon, clamping bar 7, guided on such posts, 2, springs 6, extending between such clamping bar and bed plate, bearing blocks 4: carried by the posts 2, shaft 3, carried by such bearing blocks, eccentrics 11, secured to said shaft, 3, operating handle 10, eccentric extension bars 12, extending from the eccentrics to the clamping bar, longitudinal guides 13, provided on the clamping bar, a knife carriage adapted tothe guides and cutting or scoring tool carried by the knife carriage, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the bed plate, 1, the posts, 2, provided thereon, clamping bar, 7, guided upon posts, 2, springs, 6, extending between such clamping bar and bed plate, hearing blocks, 4, carried by posts, 2, shaft, 3, carried by such bearing blocks, eccentric, 11, secured to said shaft, 3, operating handle, 10, eccentric extension bars, 12, longitudinal guide rails, 13, provided upon the front face of the clamping bar, a knife carriage, 8, adapted to such guide rails, vertically adj ustable slotted plate, 15, adjustably secured to such carriage, 8, and scoring tool, 17, adjustably secured to such carriage, 8, through the medium of the adjustable plate, 15, substantially as described. 1
