Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. BROWVER, OF RODNEY, MICHIGAN.
SAW-GUMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,825, dated August 27, 1889.
Application filed May 29, 1889.
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES F. BROWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rodney, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Gumrners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in saw-gummers; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of a frame and bed and a punch having a shearing cut, whereby the best results areaccomplished by a tool of simple construction, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof.
A is a bed-piece having a bed-die B.
C is an extension bending upwardly into the guide-arm D, which in vertical line therewith is provided with the vertical bearing E of suitable size to allow of the free play therein of the punch F. The punch F at its lower end has the shoulder orledge a to form adie I) of suitable size to enter the bed-die B. The lower edge a of the die I) is cut at an angle to give a shearing cut in the operation of the punch. A shoulder or stop (Z is formed at the rear of the punch to limit its down ward motion.
The parts being thus constructed and arranged, they are intended to operate as follows: The saw to be gummed is held by the operator upon the bed, with one interdental space over the bed-die, the point of the die resting upon the part of the saw-blade to be cut out. The operator, striking the top of the die, cuts out with a shearing cut the desired piece. The bed-die gradually enlarges toward the bottom to prevent the choking up of the die. By this construction of die aperfectly clean cut with sharp edges is obtained.
The tool is one which can be easily carried by the operator in his pocket, and for the use of farmers and woodsmen, where repairs to a complicated tool are difficult to be had, my device is of especial use. There are no parts to get out of repair, and the working done by means of the shearing cut gives a cleancut sharp edge to both sides of the saw, at the same time requiring comparatively little power on the part of the operator to make the ent.
IV hat I claim as my invention is 1. In a saw-gummer, the combination, with the bed provided with the bed-die, of a guidearm having the vertical bearing and the punch adapted to have a vertical motion in said bearing, and provided at its lower end with a die having an inclined bottom and a stop, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-gummer, the combination, with the bed-die, of the extension (3, guide-arm D, having a verticalbearing E, punch F, having a shoulder A, die I), and inclined edge 0, whereby a shearing cut is obtained, and a stop cl, the parts being arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix 1n y signature, in presence of two witnesses, th s 10th day of April, 1885).
JAMES F. BROWER.
