Specification 01 Letters Patent.
s w I as" o', a hast.
Application filed July let, 1921. Serial lite. sea ers.
the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accomforming part of this specification.
' y invention relates to improvements in letter files and the object of my improvement is to provide a construction of such a character as to afford easy accessibility to the contents of the file when opened and compactness when closed with provision for locking in said closed position.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same part throughout and in which 1 is a perspective view of the letter file with the front extension portion shown in dotted lines in an open position and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig/f1.
The improved letter file 1 consists of a back 2, sides 3 and 4, a bottom 5, a front 6 to which is hinged at 7 an extension 8 and a 10 to the back 2.
The flanged cover 9 is provided with lugs (t, adapted to enter a lock 11, secured to the extension 8.
The sides 3 and 4 are bent over at the top to form downwardly projecting portions 3 and 4 which thereby provide narrow spaces into which wings 12 and 13 of the extension 8 extend and are thus guided when the file is opened or closed. The portions 3* and 4* also serve as shields to prevent the usual indexed sheets A between which the letters to be filed are placed, from interfering with the free movement of the wings 12 and 13.
' Means for limiting the extent of the outward movement of the extension 8 are rb vided by bending the front edges of the sides 3 and s backwardly to form ears 14 and the rear edges of the Wings 12 and- 13 in a c0rrespending manner, but forwardly inclined forming ears 15, so that these bent edges will engage each other as shown in Fig. 2. When the extension 8 is pulled out had to the contents ofthe. file ad 'Wll pushed in the file is substantially a rectangular shape and more or l com occupying a comparatively small space The flanged never 9 is adapted to the sidesB and and the top edge e extension 8 so that when the cover the extension is held firmly in clo tion, the lock being solely to protect t tents. By reason of this construction r be readily seen that the constructionahove over described readily lends itself for use as a his for card indexes, phonograph records, letters or other similar devices generally "opt under some systematic tiling arrangemei'it and while the deviceis designed particularly for use as a letter file, the same is not neces sarily limited thereto.
.Having thus described I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, perrnissibie modifications being expressly reserved, is as follows:
'1. A letter file, comprising a receptacle, including a cover, a lower vertical front p tion and an extension hinged to the portion, said extension having guide win s, guides for said wings formed by the downwardly projecting said receptacle and means for limitingthe extent of the outward movement of extension comprising hent over portions o receptacle and the extension substantia. shown and described.
2. A file comprising a recepta cover therefor and a lower, portion, extension hingedly con ecte the front portion, said extension havii 2;"- guide win s, the inner edges of said wings being bent outwardly, the sides of said receptacle being bent on themselves to consti tute guides for the wings and maintain the same in non-contacting position with the contents of the receptacle, the front edges of the respective sides being formed to the outwardly bent edges of the wings to limit the outward movement of the hinged extension with respect to the front portion of the receptacle.
