Application filed March 3,
,Be it known that 1, AUGUST J. CA LsoN, a'subject of the Government of Finland, residin at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and tateof' Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in; vHair-Clippers, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in hair clippers and the object of my invention cheap, eflicient and substantial mechanism by which they may be attached to an electric motor in such manner that thehair clippers will be driven thereby. ,l
A further object is to provide a hair, clipper wherein the working parts are housed in suchmanner as to exclude hair therefrom and to provide mechanism that will impart a relatively long cutting stoke to the hair clippers.
T accomplish these objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
v Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a motor casing having hair clippers constructed in accordance with my invention installed thereon;
Fig. 2 is a view inhorizontal cross-section on brokenline 2, 2 of Fig. 1; and 1 Fig. 3 is a view in vertical mid-section on broken line 3, 3 of Fig. 2, a fragment of the motor andv motor sha 't being shown. Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numeralsindicatelike parts, the. numeral 5 designates a, casing of well known form of construction wherein is disposed an electric motor, not shown, that v is arranged to rotate a main shaft ti'having a smaller eccentric driving shaft 7 rigidly connected therewith and projecting from the end thereof;
The motor casin suitable handle 8 t rough which extends a cable 10' by which electric current is conducted to the motor and is further provided with a thumb switch 11 for starting and stopping the speed of the same.
The hair clippers comprise a base member 12 which is provided on the front edge with teeth 14: and arranged to have an upper cut-' ting member 15 reciprocably mounted therer is provided with a 1919. Seria1Ho.280,a85.
x on, the cuttin member 15 having teeth 16 on the front e ge thereof that move transversely over the teeth 14 oflthe base member.
The cutting member 15 provided with two longitudinally extending slots 17 which are arranged to fit over t e upper end of stud pins 18 that are fixed to the base member 12 and by which the cutting member is guided for reciprocation.
The base member 12 is. secured by screws 20 to the bottom 21 of a'housing, the said housing comprising the side walls 22 and 23, a rear Wall24 and a top wall 25 whereon is provided a socket 26 that is adapted to fit over the lower end 27 of the motor casing 5.
The lower end 27 of the motor casing 5 is preferably of reduced size whereby a shoulder 29' is formed and the socket '26 is arranged to fit against the shoulder 29 and be secured to the end 27 by'a set screw 28.
The front edge of the housing cover 25 projects well forward over the clippers, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the front side of such housing is closed by a plate 31 of spring metal that is secured-at its :top edge to thetop portion 25 of the housing and is notch 32 is adapted for the reception of the innerend 34 of a driving member 35 the outer end of which is connected by a pivot 36 to the bottom 21 ofthe housing.
The plate 35 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 37 for the reception of the bottom end of the eccentric driving shaft 7.
When the motor shaft 6 is rotated an eccentric movement will be imparted to the shaft 7 and the driving member 35 will be oscillated on its'pivot 36 and will impart reciprocating motion to the cutting member 15 thus causing the teeth 16 to move across the teeth ld-and cut hair that enters between such teethJ The mechanism for impartingreciproca tion to the cutting member 15 is entirely housed thereby excluding hair, and other foreign substances that might otherwise tend to collect in and around such mechanism.
Obviously changesin the precise form of construction of my invention may be resorted to within the scope of the following claim:
What I claim is:
Apparatus of the class described comprising a motor embodying a casing having an enlarged upper end and a cylindrical bearing at its lower end, a housing secured to the lower end of said casing, a base member carried by the housing, the forward end of the base member tapering upwardly and serrated to provide cutting teeth, a cutting -member reciprocable upon the base member with the inner and outer edges thereof beveled and engaging the base only, at the beveled edges, teeth formed at the outer beveled edge of the cutting member, the inner beveled edge of the cutting member having a 1 1 reenter ll-shaped notch formed therein with a rectangular socket at the apex of the v sha'ped notch and extending into the body of the 1 cutting member, an arm pivoted at its inner end to said base member, spaced therefrom and having a tapering end terminating in a rectangular projection entering the V- shaped and rectangular socket notch and of less dimensions than said notch, said arm having a. longitudinal slot therein, adjacent the swinging end thereof, a main-shaft extending into the cylindrical bearing of the casing, and an eccentric shaft carried by the main shaft extending into the arm slot for shifting the arm, the sidesof the V-shaped notch adapted to be engaged by the sides of the pointed end of the arm to limit reciprocable movements of the blade.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 10th day of February, A. D. 1919.
AUGUST J. (JARLSON.
