This invention yappertains to clippers of. adapted for use in tontudinalaxis thereof, whereby the teeth of the blades can be readily used as a comb incident to the cutting of the hair.
A further salient object of my invention is f the provision of novel means for forming the handle and. novel means for arranging the gearing for the reciprocating blade. within the handle, the device embodying a minimum number of operating parts, all of which are pair, and the like.
A further important object of my invention is the provision of novel means for arranging the reciprocating blade on the sta-l tionary blade or guard plate and relative to the cap plate, with novel means for regulating the tension between the reciprocating blade and the guard or stationary blade.
A still further obj ect ofmy invention is to provide electrically driven hair clippers of Vthe above character, which will be durable V and eicient in use, one that will be simple' andeasy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable o cost.

Reciprocately mounted upon the guard plate or stationary blade 1() isthe movable cutting blade 21 having formed upon'one longitudinal edge thereof the cutting teeth 22, which cooperate with the teeth 17 for clipping the hair during the reciprocation of the movable blade. The inner face of the blade 21 is also preferably provided with a relatively wide groove 23and the rear edge of the blade is provided with a rib 24 for bearing engagement with the rib 19, and is provided at spaced points with guide tongues 25 for reception in the guide groove 20. The inner edge of the blade 21 is provided with a rounded slot or notch 26, which forms va bearing, for a purpose which will be later brought out.
Extending longitudinally of the movable blade is a slot 27 through which is adapted -to extend the holding screw 28, the screw beingplaced through the stationary blade 10 through a suitable opening 29. The head of the screw can be countersunk within the lower face of the stationary blade.
In order tohold the reciprocating blade in proper position on the stationary blade and to guide the same during its movement, I
provide a head or cap plate 30, having the longitudinally extending ribs 31 andi 32 on its front and .rearedges'- The rear rib 82can beprovided with a'dependingtongue 33 for engaging over the rear edge of the reciprocating blade, while the front ribv 32 can be notched at suitable pointsas at 34 and rests upon the top surface of the blade. The hold- Y lng screw 28 extends through anopening 35 in the said head or top plate 30, and has threaded thereon a thumb nut 36. A tension spring 37 is coiled about the bolt .28V and is confined between the thumb nut 36 and the head or cap plate 30. It is obvious that by tightening or loosening the thumb nut 36 that the tension of the spring 37 cank be adjusted, thereby bringing about the adjustment of the movable blade 21 relative to the stationary blade 10. The housing 11 is adapted to receive a suitable bearing v'or casting 40for the rotatable drive shaft 41. This bearin'glor casting 40 Y can be held in place withinthe housing 11 by v means of suitable screws 42 or, the like. This shaft is adapted to have connected therewith vin any preferred way, a` flexible drive shaft, 43, which can be driven from ,any preferred type of motor (not shown). The bearing or casting 40 carries a: threaded sleeve 44, through whichA theY drive shaft 41 extends, and a head nut 45 can be threaded on the said sleeve around the iexible shaft 43. Aset Yscrew 46 can be employed for holding the head nut 45against accidental rotation. y The inner'end of the drive shaft 41 has secured thereto, in any desired way, a bevel drive gear c 47,1whichf meshes with a similar bevel gear 48, formed on or secured yto'an eccentric-cam 49. A holding bolt or shaft 50 extends axially i' through thegear 48 and eccentrically through the cam 49Y and this bolt likewise extends through the bottom wall 12 of the housing 11,
for a purpose which will be later described. It is to be noted, however, that upon rotation of the drive shaft 41 that the bevel gear 48 and consequently the eccentric cam 49 will be rotated. This cam is received within an ecl1 and this cover plate embodies a top wall 56 and a forwardly and downwardly extendingfront Vwall 57`and thecover plate is adapted to snugly engage the-edges of the side walls 13 and 14 and the rear wall-15. VSuitable gaskets can be interposed between the meeting surfaces of -thecover plate and the side., and rear walls of the housing, so as to absorb any shock and to reduce vibration and prevent the leakage of any grease between the cover plate and thewalls of the housing. The
front edge of the cover plate can be notchedaj as at -58 to permit'the pitman rod to extend therethrough and under the cap plate 80.
The bolt or shaft 50 extends through the cover plate 55 and a winged or thumb nut 59 can' be threaded on the bolt orshaft in yen-jgagement with the kcover plate. Thus the bolt or shaft 50 is employed for the dual purpose of connecting the cover plate with the housing, and for rotatably` supporting the bevel gear 48 and the eccentric cam 49.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen thatI have provided'a novel hair clip- Thus, upon per which is of an exceptionally simple and Vdurable construction and in which the cutting blade is arranged parallel of the longil tudinal` axis of the gear housing or handle,
whereby the cutting teeth will be arranged at one longitudinal edge of the device.
