Patented- Aug. 8, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE our snAvEn. Harvey H Hoy, Fillmore, Calif. Application December 2) 1937', Serial No. muss 2 Claims.
This invention relates to cutlery and more particularly safety razors classified as dry shavers.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a dry shaver having a movable cutting blade adapted to simultaneously reciprocate and oscillate relative to a stationary cutting blade during its cutting action.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a dry shaver having a movable cutting. blade associated with means whereby a reciprocatory and oscillatory movement is imparted to the same by a suitable source of power.
A further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the stationary and movable cutting blades.
With these and other. objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly 'set forth in the specification, illustrated .in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims and, while this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction and arrangement of elements as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this invention:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a dry shaver as constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical cross sectional view approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. -2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the movable cutting 36 blade.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view approximately on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan view of the stationary cutting blade showing a portion of the drive shaft 40 associated therewith in section.
Fig. '7 is a bottom view of the stationary cutting blade partly in section showing the movable cutting blade associated therewith. r
In the present embodiment of this invention 45 the numeral 5 designates, in general, a dry shaver which preferably consists of a hollow handle 6 having an electric motor M suitably secured therein and electrically connected to a suitable electric switch S having an electricity conduit C 50 extending therefrom to a source of electric current.
Suitably secured to the handle 6 is a stationary cutting blade I which is provided with a cylindrical bore 8 preferably eccentrically disposed rela- 55 tive to the diameter of the cutting blade so as to provide a relatively thin wall having serrations 9 in the cutting surface thereof and a thicker wall l0 providedwith an open guide slot ll therein obliquely disposed relative to a line extending through its longitudinal center.
. snugly disposed within the bore 8 of the stationary cutting blade I is a cylindrical movable cutting blade l2 having tangently disposed ribs l3 formed thereon adapted to contact the inner surfacesof the serrated thin wall thereof and 10 operate in conjunction therewith in performing its cutting action. Formed in the movable cutting blade I2 is a socket or seat It adapted to register with the slot ii in the stationary cutting blade to accommodate the free end I! of a pitman rod I6 connected to the motor M by 'an eccentric H.
In order to retain the free end of the pitman rod IS in operative association with the movable cutting blade and yet permit it to freely rock as 20 the eccentric rotates, a substantially spherical head It is formed thereon, the same being of greater diameter than the width of the slot H to prevent dislodgment from the groove or seat ll.
With the aforesaid elements operatively asso- 25 ciated as heretofore set forth, the pitman rod is reciprocated by the eccentric or other similarmeans connected to the motor, whereupon the movable cutting blade not only reciprocates in a longitudinal direction across the serrations of 30 the stationary cutting blade but, through the instrumentality of the corelated extremity of the pitman rod and guideslot therefor, axial oscillations of the same is produced, thus it is apparent a compound shearing action is established as the movable blade is manipulated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A dry shaver comprising a tubular stationary blade open at both ends and having its upper portion formed with a slot extending longitudinally from its rear end diagonally toward its front end, the under portion of said tubular jaw being formed with transversely extending slots spaced from each other longitudinally of the jaw and defining transverse teeth between them, a cutter bar housed in the tubular jaw and slidable longitudinally and turnable transversely therein, said cutter bar having its, upper portion formed with a socket registering with the slot of the tubular jaw and its under portion formed with trans- .verse grooves spaced from each other longitudinally of the bar and defining transverse teeth between them for cooperating with the teeth of the tubular jaw when the cutter bar is shifted longitudinally; a hollow handle extending upwardly and rearwardly from the tubular jaw and enclosing the slot thereof, a motor in said handle,
and a pitman rod extending longitudinally in said handle and reciprocated from said motor, said rod having its forward 'end portion bent to form a depending pin passing v through the diagonal slot of the tubular jaw and loosely engaged in the socket of the cutter bar for imparting reciprocating and rocking movement to the cutter bar during movement of the pin longitudinally in the diagonal slot.
2. A dry shaver comprising a tubular stationary jaw having its under portion formed with a series of transverse slots defining transverse teeth between them, said tubular jaw now being formed with a longitudinal diagonally extending slot, a cutter bar slidable longitudinally in said tubular jaw and rockable therein, said cutter bar having its under portion formed with transverse teeth for cooperating with the teeth of the tubular jaw and its upper portion formed with a socket registering with the slot of the tubular jaw, and actuating means for said cutter bar including a reciprocating pitman extending longitudinally of the tubular jaw and having one end provided with a pin extending through the diagonal slot and engaged in the socket of the cutter bar.
