Northbridge, Mass.
Application July 21, 1941, Serial No. 403,439
6 Claims. (01. 30-215) My invention relates to improvements in power driven clippers, and particularly to improvements in electrically driven hair clippers especially, although not necessarily, for barbers use in trimming and cutting the hair of customers, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a more eificient, safer and more comfortable arrangement of this character.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a general side elevational view partly broken away to show interior mechanism.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 2 along the line 33 and looking toward the right in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the lower cutter.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the upper cutter.
Figure 6 is a somewhat enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken through the assembled cutters.
Figure 7 is a perspective View of the support arm.
Figure 8 is an enlarged elevational view of the eccentric follower.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates a casing formed to act as a handle, being preferably elongated as shown and containing a coaxial electric motor (not shown) having the coaxial shaft 6 formed with a worm thread I positioned at one end within the casing and in mesh with a worm wheel 8 rotatably mounted in the casing and having on one side the circular eccentric 9 which is operatively disposed between the legs I0 and II of the follower which is generally designated I2. The legs depend from opposite sides of a plate portion I3 in which are formed longitudinally spaced holes I4 and I5. The hole I5 receives a pivot bolt I6 whereby the follower is rockably mounted above the worm shaft as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings and at one sid of said shaft, with the edges of the plate I3 yieldably engaged by oppositely directed depending leaf springs I1 and I8, respectively, which are attached to the upper wall of the casing. The hole I4 has rotatably inserted therein a lateral arm IS on the connecting rod 20 which works through an accommodating opening 2| in the adjacent end of the casing 5. A rubber or similar material bumper sleeve 22 is circumposed on the connecting rod to avoid any harsh engagement with the sides of the opening 2I.
A tongue 23 extends longitudinally from the end of the casing 5 adjacent the opening 2|. A lower stationary cutter 25 has a shank 44 at its inner end fastened to the tongue by screws 45 and opposite sides of the cutter are beveled as indicated by the numerals 26 and formed with teeth 21. The flat top of the lower cutter 25 is formed with a longitudinal slot 28 which is opposed to a similar longitudinal concavity 29 in the upper cutter 30 as indicated in Figure 6 of the drawings. The upper cutter 3|] has the marginal portions of its top beveled as indicated by the numerals 3| and formed with teeth 32 matching the teeth 2'! of the lower cutter, the fiat bottom of the upper cutter and the flat top of the lower cutter cooperating in shearing engagement as indicated.
At longitudinally spaced points the lower cutter is provided with threaded holes 33 and 34 which receive threaded lower ends of pins 36, the pins having upper portions extending upwardly through longitudinal slots 39 formed in the upper cutter 39, the upper portions of the pins passing upwardly through holes 40 in the top plat 4I, above which the pins have circumposed thereon expanding helical springs 42 which are held in adjustable tension by nuts 43 threaded on the upper ends of the pins, whereby the desired pressure of the upper and lower cutters against each other is provided and maintained.
The upper cutter 30 has a reduced rectangular plate portion 46 which is formed with a hole 41 which accommodates the pivot 48 which connects the outer end of the connecting rod 20 with the said upper cutter. With the switch handle 50 which is provided on the casing 5 in the on position the motor will drive the shaft 6 so as to rotate the worm wheel 8 and the eccentric 9 and thereby cause oscillation of follower I2 with consequent reciprocation of the upper cutter 39 relative to the lower cutter through the agency of the connecting rod 29, at a sufficiently high speed to effect the desired shearing action of the teeth of the cutters.
To protect against injurious contact of the cutters with the head of the customer a rotatable offset guard rod 5I having its main portion lying alongside of and adjacent one side edge of the cutters is pivoted in the near end wall of the casing and provided with a toothed wheel 52 which is in mesh with a sector gear 53 having a handle 54, enabling the operator of the clipper to manipulate th guard rod toward and away from the toothed edges of the cutters so as to space the teeth from the head, of the customer against which the guard rod will be placed in moving the clipper over the head in a hair cutting operation.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not wish to limit the application of my invention thereto, except as may be required by the scope Of the subjoined claims,
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. A clipper of the character described comprising a handle comprising a casing, a stationary toothed cutter projecting from the forward end of the handle, a movable toothed cutter mounted alongside of said stationary cutter, means securing said cutters in position with the movable cutter free for limited longitudinal reciprocation relative to said stationary cutter, drive means within said casing, and a drive connection between said movable cutter and said drive means, and a laterally adjustable guard extending longitudinally alongside the stationary cutter.
2. A clipper of the character described comprising a handle comprising a casing, a stationary cutter projecting from the handle, a movable cutter mounted alongside of said stationary cutter, means securing said cutters in position with the movable cutter free for limited longitudinal reciprocation relative to said stationary cutter, drive means within said casing, and a drive connection between said movable cutter and said drive means, said drive means comprising .a rotary transverse eccentric, and motor means for turning the same, said drive connec tion comprising a rocker operated by said eccentric, and an operating element connecting said rocker and the movable cutter.
3. A clipper comprising a support containing a invention, what is rotary motor, an eccentric operated by the motor, a rocker pivoted on said support, said rocker having a pair of laterally spaced followers operatively engaging opposite sides of said eccentric, dual spring means operating to return said rocker toward an intermediate position after being rocked in either direction by the eccentric, said dual spring means operating to keep said followers engaged with the periphery of the cocentric, a movable cutter on said support, and an operating connection between said rocker and said cutter.
4. A clipper comprising a handle comprising a casing containing a motor having a rotary worm shaft, a wormwheel journaled across the casing and meshed with said Worm shaft, an eccentric on said worm wheel, a rocker pivoted in said casing, said rocker having spaced followers engaging opposite sides of said eccentric, spring means normally urging said rocker toward an intermediate position, said spring means operating to keep the followers engaged with the periphery of the eccentric, a stationary cutter extending from said casing, a movable cutter supported alongside of said stationary cutter, and a connecting rod pivotally connected at its opposite ends to said rocker and said movable cutter.
5. In a power clipper comprising a pair of longitudinally extending relatively movable outters, a handle on which the cutters are mounted at one end, and a guard projecting from the handle along one side of the cutters.
6. In a power clipper comprising a pair of longitudinally extending relatively movable cutters, a handle on which the cutters are mounted at one end, and a guard projecting from the handle along one side of the cutters, said guard consisting of a rod eccentrically mounted on the handle for rotation, and means on the handle for rotatably adjusting said rod to position the same at different distances from the side of the cutters.
