LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,972, dated December 18, 1855.

To all wh-0m t may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIJAH RICHMOND,-

of Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps or Extinguishers Used for Spirit- Lamps, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specication of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have sesured to me by Letters Patent.

The figures of the accompanying plate of drawings represent my improvements.

Figure l is a side elevation of a pair of wick t-ubes, with my improved cap or extinguisher applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a central vertical section of `the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the cap placed in a different position.

My improvements consist in attaching to the cup a tube placed at an angle with and forming a part of the same, the said tube extending about half way up to the top of the cap. The space between the tube and the cap is left clear, there being no partit-ion between the same. When the lightis left burning the tube of the cup is slipped down upon the wick tube, the said cap tube being made sufliciently large for the purpose.

The cap can be applied and the light extinguished, simply by sliding up the cap tube unt-il the top of the wick tube is clear of the intersection of the cap tube and cap, when the extinguisher can readily be slipped over the wick tube.

There is no partition between the cap and its tube, leaving a. space between the same as shown in Figs, 2 and 3. In Figs. 1 and 2 the extinguisher is represented as applied to the t-op of the wick tube. In Fig. 3, the extinguisher is removed from the top of the wick tube a and the cap tube b slipped down over the same, as shown. The operation will be readily understood by inspection of the drawings, the cap, when it is desired to uncover the wick, being lifted up, until the tip of the wick tube is clear of the intersection of the cap and its tube, when the cap tube C can readily be slipped over the wick tube a, as shown in Fig. 3. The extinguisher is applied in a similar manner by sliding up the cap tube c until the top of the wick tube is clear of the int-ersect-ion of the cap and its tube.

By the above described mode of connecting the extinguisher to the wick tube, it will be seen that the said extinguisher can be applied to or removed from the wick, without disconnecting the tube 0 which forms a part of the cap, from the wick tube, while at the same time it can readily be taken off the wick tube, for the purpose of cleaning the same.

It will be evident that the precise angle which the tube c makes with the cap I) can be varied at pleasure, without altering the essential features of the invention.

Having thus described my improvement I shall state my claims as follows:

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent is- Attaching to the cap or extinguisher a tube placed at any desired angle with the same, leaving a clear space between the cap and its tube as described, whereby the cap or extinguisher can be applied to, or removed from, the wick without removing the A said cap tube from the wick tube, as set forth.
