pp ucaugn, mdfmvmber 1e, 1920. seria; No.
To all 'whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, HARRY A. SHEETZ, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vulcan: izers, of which the following isa specification. y This invention-relates to vulcanizers, and especially tothe small portable v ulcanizer which carries a vulcanizing patch upon a metal receptacle: the receptacle carrying a fuel element-composed o `card board, or other suitable" material, impregnated lwith it saltpeter orsimilar combustible. A
An object of this invention is to provide upon the receptacle, a means for igniting a match, or other igniter, and to so protect ,the ame from draft and bring it into such relation with the fuel element, that the fuel element inay be quickly ignited under conditions where ignition would be difficult.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, com- !)E' bination, detail, and an arrangement of parts as hereinaftermore fully described. and claimed.
In'the drawings A Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a section of 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section of the bottom of the receptacle showing' the roughened surface area. u Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of a $6 modified form.
- Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of thebottom Vof the receptacle shown'inFig. 3 showing the modified form of roughenedgarea.
Fig. 6 is afragmentary plan view of 'another modification. g Fig. 7 is an end section of Fig. 6.
i Fig. 8 is a fragmentary plan view of another modied form.
Fig. 9 is an end section of Fig/'8. Fig.10 is a fragmentary -plan view of another modified form'. u
. Fig. 11 is a section of 11-,11 o'f 10. Fig. 12 is a detail in plan o f the fue element showing the cut away portion. 50. In the embodiment of my invention there is provided a pair of fuel elements .2 and '3, consisting fof card board impregnated with saltpeter, or other combustible element,

mountedA in the receptacle 4, which vrecep- I i tacle is provided Iat 5 with a roughened surface. The fuel elements 2and 3 are cut ofr` as in a chord.` at 6, thereby leaving a space between the fuel elements and the sides of the container for the insertion of a match or other igniting means whereby the abrasion ofthe match upon the roughened surface 5 will cause the match to ignite and light the fuel element; the fiame being protected by the sides formed by the fuel elements and the sides of the container form- In the modified form shown in Fig. 1, I provide roughened lines insteadof dotted .area shown in Fig. 1. In tlie modified form in Fig. 7, I provide aj means of striking the match on the inner surface of the box or receptacle, providing a plurality of dotsf; while in the modified form shown in Fig. 8, I provide a lined roughened surfaceon the inner surface in a similar place to that shown in Fig. 7. In the modified form shown in Fig. 10, I insert in the corner of the bPox or receptacle, which may be either fixed to the box or receptacle, or to the bottom. of the fuel element, or may beleft loose in the bottom of the box and held by the box or otherwise, a piece of lsand paper which provides va roughened surface similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 4. r What is claimed is: 1. In a vulcanizer, the combination of a fuel element and areceptacle for said fuel element, a roughened surface-on the interior Aof said receptacle, the said fuel element removed to provide a pocket and passageway for a match to be' abraded upon said roughened surface.
2. A vulcanizer comprisinga fuel element,
a receptacle for ,said fuel element, vand a vul-- canizing patch upon the bottom of said receptacle, the said fuel element containing I impregnated card `board, a roughened spotv on the lbottom of said receptacle, the said away over said roughenedcardboard cut spot. v
3..In a vulcanizer, a fuel element comprising an impregnated. card board, a panl receptacleA for retaining said card' board, said-receptacle provided on its bottom with a vulcanizlng pa h, the said receptacle impressed upwardgto form a roughened surface and the said cardboard cut away overthe said roughened surface.
4. In a vnlcanizer igniter, the combination of a pan receptacle carrying a fuel ele- 5 ment with a vulcanizng patch on the bottom of said receptacle and a roughened surface on said receptacle for striking a match thereon, and an open'space on said fuel ele'- ment forl the insertion of said match, said open space being adjacent to said roughenedfw surface.
In testimony whereof I aHx my signature.
