UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED O. MOSS, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGAR-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,320, dated March 21, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CHARLES Moss, of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Lighter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to. provide a new and improved cigar-lighter for attachment to the ends of cigars for lighting the same.
The invention consists of an inflammable wafer attached to a cross whose wings are provided at their outer ends with adhesive matter for securing it to the cigar, the said water being attached to the cross while in a molten state, as hereinafter described.
In using my invention the inflammable wafer is placed against the end of the cigarwith The wings are then. bent over upon the sides of the cigar, to which they are secured bygum orother suitable adhesive substance. By rubbing the igniting compound against any suitable surface the compound is ignited and the cigar lighted.
I am aware that cigar-lighting fuses of various kinds have been attached to cigars, and I therefore do not claim broadly the invention of such devices. My il'nprovement has several advantages over all previous devices of this nature, some of which, together with the construction, I will now proceed to describe.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective viewof acigar provided with my improved cigar-lighter. .Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved cigar-lighter. Fig. 3 is an end edge view of the same. Fig; 4 is a plan iew of one of the blanks of the cigar-lighter.
A represents an inflammable wafer, made of the igniting compound ordinarily used on friction-matches. To the wafer A, I attach wings 0, made of paper, and composed by cutting out a cross of paper, as shown at D, Fig. 4. The wings are cemented to the wafer Aby Application filed January 5, 1882. (No model.)
placing the wafer, when in a molten state, in the center of the cross D, and as soon as the material composing the wafer is cooled the wings will be found to be firmly cemented to the wafer. The wafer is to be composed of any suitable inflammable mass which will ignite when rubbed or heated by sufficient frictionfor. instance, of the mass of which matchhead are made. The inflammable wafer is placed against the end of the cigar E, and the wings O are bent over on the sides of the cigar, and are secured on the cigar by means of gum or'some other suitable adhesive mate- 6o rial applied on the wings, thereby holding the inflammable wafer firmly on the end of the ciN gar. By rubbing that end of the cigar provided with the wafer over any suitable surface the friction produced will cause ignition of the wafer, which forms a coal of fire and ignites the cigar. No deleterious gases aredrawn into the cigar, and no parts of the wafer which might give the-cigar a bad taste remain on the cigar. Furthermore, theend ofthe cigar is not cracked or broken by fastening my improved cigar-lighter, but, on the contrary, itis strengthened and held together by the wings O.
This lighter can be attached to the cigar very easily and rapidly, and is readily and cheaply made.
Having thus described my invention,Icl-aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An improved cigar-lighter, consisting of a cross having an inflammable wafer attached to its center and adapted to be secured to acigar by having its wings bent over on the sides of cgar and connected thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A cigar-lighter consisting of the central inflammable wafer, A, and radial wings 0, provided with adhesive matterat their outcrends, the said wings being centered -to the wafer while in a molten state, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED O. MOSS.
