In the early production of gas masks, the
hoods or face pieces were made of more or less flexible material so that the masks were collapsible in use; that is, they were distended every time the user exhaled, and were collapsed every time the user inhaled. In this form of mask, the manner in which the eye pieces were secured in the hood or face of the mask was relatively unimportant so long as the joint between the eye pieces and the face or hood was gas-tight. Subsequently, however, and in the development of gas masks, the face pieces or hoods were made "more or less rigid so as not to be collapsible,
and in this form of gas mask, the manner m which eye pieces are secured in the face piece or hood is of considerable importance.
In the development of this latter type of mask, and more particularly in the development of the manner in which the eye pieces were secured therein, it was found that by securing the eye pieces in the openings in the fabric of the hood in the ordinary manner, the position of the eye pieces, relatively to theoutline of the hood, was not fixed or determined. Now obviously, it is desirable to have the eye pieces stand out from the general outline or contour of the hood, and the object of my invention is to accomplish this purpose- In doing so, I found that by insorting the eye piece in an opening of predetermined'shape in the hood, preferably an elongated opening appreciably'smaller. than the flange of theeye .pieceinserted therein, the eye piece would assume a predetermined position in the hood and tend to stand away from the face of the wearer.

In making the experiments which developed this invention, variously formed or shaped openings were tried for the reception of the flange 12 of the eye piece member. That is, circular openings. were tried and various forms of elliptical openings were also tried and in order to produce the results desired, I havefound that an oval opening, round at the opposite ends and having straight intervening edges produces the best results. One of these openings is indicated at 16 and as shown in Fig. 2,the opposite edges17 thereof are curved and preferably circular in outline, while the intervening or connecting edges 18 are preferably straight. It is to be understood however, that the configuration of the o' ening is not limited to the oval form. ther configurations may be used.- lt is necessary however that the eye piece opening in the hood be considerably smaller than the diameter of the flange of the eye piece. The eye piece holes formed in the mask in the preferred manner are materially smaller than the flange 12 of the eye piece, the major access of the oval opening being appreciably out or extend from the contour of the hood as indicated in Fig. 1, and as also shown in this figure, the extent of the bulge at the top and bottom of the eye pieces as indicated at 2o is more acute than the extent of the bulge at the sides of the eye pieces as indi :ated at 21. This, will be understood. is due to the configuration ot' the opening into which the fiange of the eye piece is inserted.
While forming no part of my invention, it Ayill be umlerstood that the eye piece may be completed by employing a flange 22'which is suitably secured to the flange 13 of theeye piece member and turned down to bear against the lens 23 with a gasket 2- intermediate ot' the lens and the ring portion 10 oi the eye piece member, the rib ll being utilized as will be appreciated to assist in making this joint. gas tight.
I claim my invention:
1. In a gas mask. a hood of flexible mate rial havingan eye opening therein of predetermined configuration. and an eye piece having a flange of a configuration differing from that ol the eye piece opening in the hood and adapted to be inserted in said opening so that the edge. portions of the hood defining the opening are placed under difi'erent tensions when the eye piece is inserted in the opcning,- whereby those portions of the hood adjacent the .eye piece are caused to automatically stand outwardly from. the hood when the eye piece is secured in position therein.
2. in a gas mask, a hood of flexible material having an eye opening therein ot' elongated configuration with rounded end portions, and an eye piece having a eireular flange adapted to be forced into the said opening in the hood and when 'in place therein to cause a varied tension to be ap plied to those parts of the fabric of-the hood defining the eye opening therein, wlha'reby the eye section of the hood is caused automatically to stand outwardly from the body thereof so as not to contact with the eye of the wearer.
3. In a gas mask. a hood of flexible material having an eye opening therein with rounded'ends at the upper and lower extremities and substantially straight side portions. and an eye piece coml'n'ising a ring and a circular flange adapted to be inserted in the elongated eye opening in the hood to 'ause a greater tension to be applied at the upper and lower sections of the opening than at the side sections thereof whereby the eye sections of the hood are automatically caused to stand outwardly from the body thereof in such a manner as not to contact with the eyes ot the wearer.
4. A" gas mask of elastic material provided with eye pieces and having the portions adjacent said eye piecesconstrained by a difference in perimeter between the original eye, piece opening in said mask and the frame of said eye pieces to. stand outwardly fronr the main portion of said mask;
A gas mask of non-molded elastic material provided with eye pieces and having the portions adjacent said eye pieces constrained by avv difference in perimeter-between the original. eye-piece openings in said mask and stand out said mask.
