' DOUBLE-BALANCE CENCLRIFUGALr PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Application led August 3, 1920. Serial No. 401,010.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WALTER R. WoooK, HERBERT J. WoooK, and ERIC M. Woooir, citizensA of the United States, residin at Lodi, county of San Joaquin, State of aliornia, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Double-BalanceCentrifugal Pumps; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the'same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a y part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in centrifugal pumps, being Vof the general design and principle shown in our co-pending application-for patent filed-July 31st., 1920, Serial No. 393,814, but incorporatingr therein certain featuresof improvement.
The principal object lof the present invention is to so arrange and construct the various parts of the pump, particularly of the casing, that a perfect double balance will be had, both on the vacuum and pressure sides-that is, in the intake and discharge chambers-ot` the pump.
A second object is to construct the discharge or pressure chamber so that it completely surrounds the vacuum or intake chamber, thus positively insuring against air leaking into the vacuum chamber, regardless of flaws or even holes in the latter, which would ordinarily suck air and materially reduce the efficiency of the pump.
A third object is to position deflectors in the discharge chamber in alinement with the runners whereby the water therefrom will be diverted into the central portion of the chamber, thereby preventing any churning of the water.
The discharge chamber is also arranged as a whole relative to the runners, that the water will be taken from the spiral surrounding the runners at all points in the periphery of the same, thus relieving the pressure on the runners, and tending further to reduce the possibilityl of churning.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes which it is designed. These objects we accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement .0f parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is atop plan View of the pump, half in section.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the pump, taken substantially on the vertical center line thereof..
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a central cylindrical casing 1 having` an intake 2 in one side thereof and central of its length, this member forming the intake or vacuum chamber.
A vertical partition 3 practically divides this chamber into two equal parts, the ar rangement and purpose of this partition being asset 4forth inthe aforementioned copending application. p
This chamber also has end walls 4 provided with central orifices in which fit the inner and open ends of opposed runners 5, mounted on a shaft 6 which is concentric with the chamber 1.
These runners comprise spaced walls 7 having curved vanes 8 connecting the same, this construction and the arrangement thereof in connection with the chamber walls 4 being also as shown in our co-pending application No. 393,814.
Concentric with the casing 1, and formed therewith, and extending therebeyond over the plane of the runners is a cylindrical casimpair the eliciency of the pump. In the spiral portions of the discharge or pressure chamber are radial and evenly spaced baievanes or defiectors 14, these being so angled in a vertical plane that the water thrown by the runners 5 is immediately caught thereby and diverted into the central chamber 11,
thus preventing any churning of the Water in the spirals.
The chamber is provided With a centrally positioned discharge orifice l5, the adjacent and corresponding deectors in the runner spirals being connected togetherby a` curved and longitudinal partition 16 which connects the casing l With the casing 9 and terminates along the latter casing at the edgeV of the orifice l5 opposite to the direction of flow of the Water, so that the Water in the central chamber is positivelydiverted into the said `orifice and cannot churn around in said chamber.
From the foregoing description it will be readily vseen that We have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction ofthe device, still'in practice such deviations from such detail may be'resorted to and do not form a departure from the spirit ofthe invention, as defined bythe appended claims. n p
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A centrifugal pump` including a pair of opposed runners, a common intake ychamber therebetween, another chamber surrounding the intake chamber and extending over the runners, and deflectors arranged in the outer chamber adjacent the peripheryof the runners and adapted to direct the Water therefrom into the central portion of the v over the runners to form the runner-spirals,
deflectors in said spirals arranged to divert the Waterrinto the central portion of the outer chamber, said chamber being provided With a discharge orifice, and means whereby the Water diverted into the said chamber Will be positively discharged through said orifice. Y
3. A centrifugal pump including a pair of opposed runners, a common intake chamber therebetween, another chamber surrounding the Vintake chamber' and extending over the runners to form the runner-spirals, deflectors in said spirals arranged'to divert thef'water into the centraly portion of the outer chamber, said chamber being provided vvith a discharge orifice, `and a longitudinal partition Wall connecting the Walls of said chamber and positioned adj acent one e'dge'of the discharge orifice, said partition Wall being formed as an extension of a pair of corresponding defiectors.V
In testimony vwhereof We affix our signatures. o
