i SUCTION AND PRESSURE CREATING-APPARATUS.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SK'IDMORE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction and Pressure Creating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in suction and pressure `creating apparatus and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character for creating a suction or vacuum and which apparatus is also adapted for use as a pressure creating means.
A further object is to provide anv improved apparatus o'f this character having means for causing a circulation of liqui and means whereby such circulation of the liquid will induce or. cause a suction or partial vacuum.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful ob` jects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention and in which- 7 Figure l is a View partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation of an improvedl apparatus of this character con.- structed in accordance with the principles of this inventiom Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral- 10 designates generally a tank or receptacle of any desired size and configuration having a cover 11 provided with an outlet 12 leading therefrom in which outlet is a controlling valve 13. A clean-out or draw-off pipe 14 leading from the bottom of the tank may also be provided and this pipe 14 may be provided with a controlling valve 15.
Rotatably mounted within the tank is a support, designated generally by the reference numeral 16 which is given its rotation by means of a Shaft 17 passing through a Specification of Letters Patent.

The support 16 is provided with passages 21, 22 therethrough, the passage 2l havlng communication with an inlet 23 adjacent which is a depending tubular portion 24, the inlet of the tubular portion being submerged in the liquid 25 within the tank. The passage 22 has communication with a depending tubular portion 26 which extends through the tubular portion 24 to project therebeyond and is journaled in a suitable bearing 27 preferably supported by the bottom of the tank 10 and this tubular portion 26 has communication with a pipe or passage 28 in which it is desired to create a Suction. The external diameter of the tubular portion 26 is considerably smaller than the .interior diameter o the tubular portion 24 and disposed within this tubular portion 24 is a Spirally arranged conveyer 29, which is adapted when the Support 16 is rotated, to convey some of. the liquid 25 into the passage 24 to be discharged through the passage 21 by centrifugal force and acts to prime the apparatus. The passages 21, 22 are preferably formed by a separating partition 30. Each of the passages 21, 22 is provided with a plurality of radially disposed outlets opening through the periphery of the support 16 and connected with each of these outlets is a radially disposed tubular member or arm 31 which may be of any desired contour and is reduced from the inlet end toward the discharge outlet or extremity 32. An element 33 is rotatably mounted upon the support 16 to intercept each of the coperating outlets of the passages 21, 22 and this element is held in p0- sition in .any suitable manner preferably by means-of the ends of its axle 34 having a bearing in the partition 30 and the extremity of the partition beyond the element 33 is preferably gradually reduced in configuration as shown more clearly in Fig. 1 to extend into the tubular member 31, so as not to interfere with the passage of the fluids therethrough. The axis of rotation of the element 33 is `preferably disposed longitudinally of the direction of flow of the fluid and the elements are provided with wings or blades 36 extending peripherally therearound and these blades or wings are preferably of a slightly spiral configuration, so that as the liquid 25 flows through the passagey 212 the element 33 will be rotated by the liquid and will not only be thrown out of the tubular members 31 by centrifugal force but the liquid in thus passing out of these members will have a tendency to create a suction through the passage 22. With this form of the invention, as the support is rotated, the liquid will be forced into the passage 21 through the tubular entrance portion 24 as above indicated and as the liquid flows therethrough into the tubular member 31 and the elements 33 are rotated thereby, ,these elements will create a suction in the passages 22, 26, 28 and as the element 33 is rotated, a predetermined quantity of the fluid from the passage 22 'will be delivered into the liquid flowing through the passage 21 to be discharged therewith from the tubular element 31, into the tank 10. When thus delivered, the fluid which 'is not condensed -will separate from through the pipe-12.v
The level of the liquid 25 in the tank is maintained below the discharge outlets of the tubular elements 31.
In the form 4of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the rotatable support 36 is provided with a passage 37 therethrough similar to the passage 21 and this passage 37 is provided with a depending tubular portion 38 which is submerged in the liquid 25 and is provided with blades or elements 39 therein which serve the same function as the conveyer 29 in Fig. 1. The support 36 is provided with a chamber 40 above the passage 37 and this chamber is provided with a tubular inlet 41 journaled in a suitable bearing 42rand having communication with an inlet or suction passage 43. The chamber 40 may be of any desired size and the wall 44 of the chamber which forms a dividing partition between the outlet 45 of the passage 37, and the interior of the chamber 40, is provided with an opening 46 formed by shaping the wall 47 so as to eX- tendinwardly into the chamber- 40, and this wall 47 iS provided with an opening 48 which forms the only communication between the passage 37 and the interior of the chamber 40. Arranged to rotate within the opening 46 thus formed is a rotary element 49 having radially disposed spaced wings or blades'50 which project into the passage 45 so that when the support 36 is rotated, by the shaft 17, and the liquid 25 in the tank, above which the discharge outlets 45 rotate, is forced through the passage 37 and out the discharge 45, the element 49 will be rotated, and will create a suction in the chamber-40, which will be manifested in the passages 41, 43 and the fluid drawn from the chamber 40 will be discharged in predetermined quantities into the passage 37 to commingle with the liquid flowing therethrough and will be .discharged with the liquid through the outlet 45. The uncondensed fluid as it passes from the element 45 will be separated from the liquid, the latter precipitating in the tank, while the fluid will rise in the tank.
A motor 72 may be provided for operating the centrifugal pumps 66, 69.
What is claimed as new is:
1. An apparatus of the character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough and embodying one or more radial discharge passages, said support being also provided with a fluid passage, an element' mounted fora-otation with and with respect to the support, said element operating in the liquid passage to be freely rotated by the liquid flowing through the passage, said element also operating to create a suction in the fluid passage.
2. An apparatus of the :character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough and embodying one or more radial discharge passages, said support being also provided with a fluid passage, an element mounted for rotation with and with respect to the support, said element operating in the liquid passage to be freely rotated by the liquid flowing through the passage, said element also operating to create a suction in the fluid passage, and deliver fluid from the fluid passage into the liquid as the latter flows through the liquid passage.
3. An apparatus of the character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough and embodying one or more radial discharge passages, means for rotatingthe support, means for inducing a circulation of liquid through the passage, said support also having a fluid passage having a separate source of supply,
and a rotatable element mounted upon the support for rotation therewith and with re` spect thereto, said element being freely rotatable by the liquid flowing through the liquid passage, and operating to intermittently deliver predetermined quantities of' fluid from the fluid passage into the liquid as it flows through the liquid passage.
4. An apparatus of the character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough and embodying one or more radial discharge. passages, means for rotating the support, means for inducing a circulation of liquid through the passage, said support also having a fluid passage having a separate source of supply, and a rotatable element mounted upon the support for rotation therewith and with respect thereto, said element being freely rotatable by the liquid flowing through the liquid passage, and operating to intermittently deliver predetermined quantities of fluid from the Huid passage into the liquid as it flows through the liquid passage, the said liquid and fluid passages merging into a common discharge outlet from the support.
5. An apparatus of the character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough and embodying one or more radial discharge passages, means for rotating the support, means for inducing a circulation of liquid through the passage, said support also having a fluid passage having a separate vsource of supply, a rotatable element mounted upon the support for rotation therewith and with respect thereto, said element being freely rotatable by the liquid flowing through they liquid passage, and operating to intermittently deliver redetermined quantities of fluid from the uid passage into the liquid as '1t flows though the liquid passage, and means for inducing circulation of the liquid throu h the liquid passage.

7 An apparatus of the character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough and embodying one or more radial discharge passages, means for rotating the support, means for inducing a circulation of liquid through the passage, said support also having a fluid passage having a separate source of supply, a rotatable element mounted upon the support for rotation therewith and with respect thereto, said element being freely rotatable by the li uid flowing through the liquid passage, an operating to intermittently deliver predetermined quantities of fluid from the fluid passage into the liquid as it flows through the liquid passage, a tank in which the support rotates, said tank having liquid therein and above which liquid the discharge outlet of the liquid passage operates, and means for causing the liquid in the tank to flow through the liquid passage, the

An apparatus of the character described embodying a rotatable support having a liquid passage therethrough, a tank in which the support rotates, said tank having liquid therein and above which liquid the discharge outlet of the passage rotates, and a rotatable element housed in the support, said element ntercepting both of the passages and freely rotatable by the liquid flowing through one of thel passages to cause the element to draw fluid from the other passage and deliver the same into the liquid passage.
12. A11 apparatus of the character described embodyinga rotatable` support having a liquid passage therethrough, a tank in which the support rotates, Said tank having liquid therein and above which liquid the discharge outlet of the passage rotates,
means for rotating the support, a fluid passage also in the support, a rotatable element housed in the support, said element intercepting both of the passages and freely rotatable by the liquid flowing through one of the passages to cause the element to draw fluid from the other passage and deliver the same into the liquid passage, and means for inducing a flow of the liquid through the liquid lpassage. e
13. n apparatus of the character described embodying a' structure having two passages having separate inlets and a common discharge outlet, a rotatable element intercepting bothof' the passages, said element being freely rotatable by the passage of liquid through one of the passages to create a suction in the other passage and 'delivera different fluid from the last said passage into the liquid passage, the Said element embodying a plurality of radial blades rotatable about an axis extending substantially in the direction of' flow of the liquid,
sai'd blades being disposed to extend spirally about the axis in a general direction length- Wise of the said element.
