TYPEWRITER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 11, 19,21.
Application filed June 30, 1920. i Serial No. 393,216.
To all to 720m it may concern Be it known that I, Encarta) BnnNnnURe, a citizen of the German Lmpire, residing at Leipzig, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTypewriters, (for which I have filed applications in Germany, May 26, 1916; Switzerland, Nov. 11, 1919; Great Britain, Jan. 12, 1920; Belgium, Nov. 12, 1919; France, Nov. 7, 1919,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to typewriters and more especially to machines with type carriers moving in a straight line. It is an object of my invention to improve the mannor of guiding the type carriers.
In the case of typewriters of the kind aforesaid, there have been developed in the course of time certain drawbacks, the removal of which is of essential importance since the possibility of making satisfactory use of the machines is dependent thereon to a considerable degree.
Thus it would appear to be primarily desirable to so arrange the roller and the sheet of paper carried thereon as to enable the one as well as the other to be always completely visible to the eye of the person using the machine, that is to say, without being in any way hidden or covered by a guide head fixed in front close to the roller. It is furthermore of special importance that the surface to be written on shall always be located as closely as possible to the eye of the writer in order to enable even short-sighted persons to use such machines with perfect ease. In connection herewith it is of chief importance and forms a fact that must not be overlooked that above all the control arrangement for the types and the type-rod mechanism shall be so constructed that the machine will always write straight to the line and this for a good and reasonable length of time. All this the present invention is intended to secure.
In the drawings annexed to this specification and forming part thereof the preferred form of a machine embodying the features of my invention is illustrated. In the drawings-- Figure 1 is a plan, while Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sections.
Referring to the drawings, the printing types are disposed on a plurality of peculiarly constructed carriers a arranged in the form of a quadrant, and secured against lateral oscillation by being held between combshaped guide members 0, (Z, and further conducted and therewith secured against any deflections whatsoever on the plate 6 by the type or types 75 fixed to the front end of each carrier'a, and underneath said plate by an arm 2) of the carrier. A bell crank lever g is arranged to engage the slot f formed in the rear end of the ca "rier, the said lever be ing connected to the type lever It by means of an intermediate lever i. The type carrier a is secured in its movements above the plate 6 by the type is and below by the arm 6, against deflections both from above and below. The type 7.; is moreover secured against lateral deflection by a third guide member Z disposed in front of the roller.
Owing to the peculiar construction of the type carriers a in conjunction with the special arrangement of the levers g, z and it, the form of the machine is shortened so that the roller m is thereby brought closer to the eye of the person engaged in writing. Owing to the carrier at being guided on the plate 2' by the type 7;, and underneath said plate by the arm 6, as also between the members 0, (Z, the type 7c is secured against any deflection whatsoever, this security being furthermore increased the moment the type comes to strike against the sheet of paper, by the high lateral guides Z, whereby the writing will be permanently straight and true to line.
In connection with this said total ar "angement of the machine, its structure may also be made considerably shorter than that'of similar kinds of typewriting machines hitherto known.
The remaining construction of the typewriting machine, along with its various devices, may be efiected in manifold ways.
I claim 1. In a typewriter in combination, a type carrier, means for imparting to said carrier a straight line movement, a quadrant-shaped guide for said carrier, an arm arranged below said carrier in parallel therewith and fixed thereto and a for said arm.
2. In a typewriter in combination, a paper roller, a type carrier, means for imparting to said carrier a straight line movement, a quadrant shaped guide and a slotted guide, disposed near said roller, for said carrier, an arm arranged below said carrier in parallel therewith and fixed thereto and a quadrantshaped guide for said arm.
quadrant-shaped guide 3. In a typewriter in coinloinatiom a plu rality of type carriers, means for imparting to said Carriers a straight line movement, a common support for said carriers and means for positively guiding said carrier above and 1 below said support.
l. In a typewriter in combination, a plutherewith and fined tnereto and guides above and below said support for said carriersand for said arms. 7
5. In a typewriter, a sheet metal type carrier 01" substantially rectangular form having a slot in said carrier extending longitudinally thereof and covering a length in excess of one-half of the length of the carrier, a guide. engaging through the slot, and a second guide means for the carrier disposed at a lower level than the first guide.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
