TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SMITH, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-WVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ribbon mechanism for typewriting machines and more particularly to mechanism in which a ribbon having fields of diiferent characteristics may be set to cause either of said fields to be automatically moved into the path of an approaching type in each printing operation.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide, in a construction of the character specified, simple and etlicient means for regulating the mechanism so that any desired field of the ribbon may be presented for cooperation with the printing instrument-alities.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for rendering the mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon (polychrome or otherwise) to the printing pointso that the machine may be readily employed for the preparation of mimeograph sheets when de-' sired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide means for automatically throwing the ribbon feed mechanism out of operation when the machine is rendered inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point, so that the ribbon will not be fed when the machine is employed for mimeograph work, and so that the ribbon will be used in a uniform manner and the imprint-s produced will be of a. uniform character.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists of the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices described in the following specification and set forth in'the accompanying claims.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the various views, Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of so much of a typewriting machine as is necessary to illustrate my invention in its application thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the upper portion of the machine. I have shown my invention applied to a Monarch machine in which it may be employed without changing the structural features of said machine, though it should be understood that the invention may be applied to other styles of machines.
Referring first to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 7 and Fig. 10 of the drawings, it will be seen that the frame of the machine comprises a base 1, corner postsQ and a top plate 3. A platen 4L, diagrammatically shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is carried by the usual carriage which travels from side to side of the machine over the top plate 3 and is connected to oneend of a band 5 which is secured at its opposite end to a spring drum 6 to effect a step-by-step letter feed movement of the carriage in the usual manner under the control of the usual escapement mechanism at each printing operation. The spring drum has operatively connected thereto a beveled gear 7 which meshes with a corresponding beveled gear 8 provided with a hub 9 and mounted on a shaft 10 received in bearings in bracket arms 11, 12 depending from the top plate of the machine. The beveled gear or pinion 8 is connected to the shaft 10 by a pin 13 and slot 14:, the pin being carried by the shaft and the slot being formed in the hub 9 of the gear. By this constructionthe shaft 10 is connected to rotate with the gear 8 but is capable of a longitudinal movement independently thereof, the gear being held against movement toward the left by its cooperation with the beveled pinion 7 and from movement toward the right by the bearing bracket 11. Beveled pinions 15 and 16 are carried at the ends of the rotary and longitudinally movable shaft 10 and these beveled pinions are adapted to engage with beveled pinions 17 and 18 respectively. The pinions 17 and 18 are carried by shafts 19 and 20 respectively mounted to turn in hearings in brackets which are supported by the top plate. The shafts 19 and 20 extend fore and aft of the machine and are provided at their for ward ends with beveled pinions 21 and 22 respectively, the latter pinions meshing with gears 23 and 24 respectively. The gear 23 is connected to a left-hand ribbon spool 25, Whereas the gear 24 is connected with a right-hand ribbon spool 26. The longitudinal movement of the shaft 10 is effective to bring about an engagement between the gears 15 and 17 or 16 and 18 to eflect the turning movement of either of the spools 25 and 26 depending on which set of gears is in mesh. The longitudinal movement of the shaft 10 to change the direction of the feed of the ribbon may be effected either automatically or by hand in the usual manner and by means such as those employed, for instance, in the Monarch machine. A specific showing of this shifting mechanism is deemed; unnecessary in the present instance. The ribbon 27 passesfrom one spool to the other through the guide openings in a ribbon vibrator 28 and may be of a single character or color or may have fields 0;, b of different characteristics; that is to say, the ribbon may be divided into longitudinally extending fields of different colors such as a black field a and a red field b or these fields may be of record and copying ribbon respectively. The ribbon vibrator 28, which may be of any suitable construction, has a depending arm or stem 29 pivot-ally connected at 30 to a ribbon vibrator actuating lever 31 pivoted at 32 to a depending lug or projection 33 on the top. plate of the machine. The rear end of the lever 81 is adapted to coiiperate under certain conditions with a screw stop or abutment 34 received in a threaded opening in the top plate of the machine to limit the downward movement of the vibrator.
Each ofthe type actions of the. machine includes a key lever 35 provided with a finger key 36 and fulcrumed at the rear end thereof against a fulcrum plate 37. Each key lever is provided with a restoring spring 38 and has a sub-lever 39 pivoted thereto at 40, the lower ends of the sub-levers being slotted: at 41 for coiiperation with the fulcrum rod 42 which extends beneath the various key levers and is secured at its ends to the base of the machine. The upper end of each sub-lever is pivoted at 43 to a forwardly extendin link 44 pivoted at 45 to a type bar 46 provic edwith arestoring spring 47. The type bars are segmentally arranged and. adapted to strike upwardly and rearWa-rdly at the printing point and are supported at their forward ends by a segmental pad 48 mounted on a segmental strip 49 which is supported by arms or rods 50 which extend forwardly from and are supported by a shiftable type bar segment 51. A universal bar 52 for the escapement extends beneath the various key levers and is formed as a part of a universal bar frame, the arms 53 of which are fixed on a rock-shaft 57 pivotally supported at its ends on pivot screws 54 which extend through the sides of the base 1 of the machine. A rearwardly extending arm 55 projects from the universal bar frame and an upright link 56 is ivoted to the rear end of this arm. The lmk 56 cooperates with escapement mechanism (not shown) in the usual manner to effect an operation thereof at each depression of a printing key 36. The construction thus far described is somewhat like that employed in the Monarch machine and further detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
The rod 57, which constitutes a part of the universal bar frame of the escapement mechanism, forms a pivot on which arms 58 are adapted to turn, the arms being united by a cross piece 59 to form a frame for the universal bar for the ribbon vibrator. The lefthand side arm 58 is apertured to form a bearing for a headed, shouldered screw 60 that extends through an o ening 61 in an ear or projection 61 forme at one end of a ribbon vibrating universal bar designated as a whole by the reference numeral 62, to pivotally connect one end of said universal bar to its frame. The opposite end of this universal bar 62 is provided with an ear 63 apertured to receive the end of a stem 64 which turns in a bearing in the right-hand bar 58 and is provided with a fin er piece 65. The end of the stem 64 which extends through the perforation 68 in the ear 63 is threaded and cotiperates with a nut 67 to rigidly secure the stem 64 and finger piece 65 to the universal bar 62. The stem 64 extends through a vertical slot 66 in one side of the base 1, the finger iece 65 bein outside the base. It should e understoo that the pivots 60 and 64 for the universal bar 62 are in alinement and enable the universal bar to be turned by the finger piece 65 on a longitudinal axis in bearings in the side arms 58 to bring different portions of the said universal bar opposite the key levers 35 which coiiperate therewith. This universal bar is preferably made of sheet metal and is struck up as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and. 5 to form two contact faces 69 and 70 thereon for coiiperation with the key levers, the particular contact face which is to be brought into coiiperation with the key levers bem determined by a rotative adjustment of the universal bar through the finger piece 65.

From an inspection of Figs. 4 and 6 it will be seen that the universal bar 62 is provicled about centrally thereof with an inwardly extending ear 71 apertured at 72 for cotiperation with a pivot 7 3 projecting from the lower end of an upwardly extending link I 74, the upper end of which is pivoted to the rear end of the ribbon vibrator actuating lever at 75. The link 7-4: has one end of a restoring spring 74 connected thereto, the other end of said spring being connected to the top plate of the machine. The pivotal connections 73 between the link 74 and the universal bar 62 is off-set from the pivotal axis of the universal bar as indicated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, so that the rotative adjustment of the universal bar turns the point 7 3 around the pivotal axis of the bar and either raises or lowers the link and thus changes the normal position of the lever 81 and also changes the normal position of the ribbon vibrator connected therewith. A leaf spring 76 has one end secured to the lefthand bar 58 by a headed screw 77, the rear or free end of the spring co6perating with either of the faces 69 or of the universal bar or with a third short face 78 which is formed as a projection on the universal bar at the left-hand end thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The spring 76 is in the nature of a detent by which the universal bar may be retained in any one of the three positions to which it may be adjusted by turning the finger piece 65. The universal bar 62 is notched or recessed at 79 adjacent to the upright link 7 f so that an adjustment of the bar to any one of the three positions may be readily effected without bringing it into contact with said link.
From an inspection of Fig. 5 it will be seen that the universal bar 62 in said figure has been adjusted to a position where the contact face 69 is in position to coijperate with the key levers. The effect of this adjustment is to position the ear 71 as shown in Fig. 5 and to position the connections between the ribbon vibrator and universal bar, so that the actuating lever 31 will normally be maintained in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5. A depression of a key lever at this time will effect a depression of the universal bar 62 as well as the universal bar 52 of the escapement mechanism, thus elevating the forward end of the vibrator actuating lever 31 from the position shown in full lines to that represented in dotted lines in Fig. 5 and the effect of this movement is to elevate the vibrator to a position where 'the field a or black field of the ribbon will be brought into the path of the approaching type associated with the depressed key lever. When the universal bar 62 is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 5 the pointer 65 will point to the word Black on the index 65 as shown in Fig. 14; so that the operator in effecting the adjustment of the bar by the finger piece 65 is apprised of the effect of the adjustment. From an inspection of Figs. 5, 6 and 7 it will be noted that the distance of each of the contact faces 69 and 70 from the pivotal axis of the universal bar 62 around which it receives a rotative adjustment is the same so that when the universal bar receives an adjustment from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 6 to bring the contact face 70 on the universal bar into operative position, said contact face 70 will bear the same relation to the key levers as the contact face 69 did when it was in the operative position, although the positions of the ear 71 and pivot 73 are changed, thereby causing a change in the normal position of the vibrator actuating lever 31 and the vibrator itself, the change in the normal position of the vibrator actuating lever being readily understood from a comparison of Figs. 5 and 6.
The adjustment of the universal bar 62 to the position shown in Fig. 6 is effected by turning the finger piece 65 until the pointer 65 is at the word Red on the index 65 By shifting the universal bar 62 in the manner described to bring the contact face 70 into operative position the arrangement of the parts from the universal bar to the vibrator is changed so that a depression of a key lever at this time is effective to move the vibrator actuating lever from the full line position shown in Fig. 6 to that indicated in dotted lines in said figure to bring the lowermost field b or red field of the ribbon in position to receive the impact of the types when the printing keys are actuated. The result of this arrangement is that an adjustment of the universal bar 62 may be effected to bring either field a or Z) of the ribbon to the printing point on the depression of a printing key without, however, affecting the touch on the various keys. The connection between the universal bar and vibrator is constantly maintained and the extent of motion of the vibrator is the same irrespective of which field of the ribbon is brought into use and the touch on the finger keys is uniform at all times. It will be seen that it is unnecessary inv this construction to throw any of the parts into or out of connection in order to bring about a change in the field of the ribbon to be employed.
By effecting a third rotative adjustment of the universal bar to the position shown in Fig. 7 a still further adjustment of the ear 71 is effected to elevate the rear end of the vibrator actuating lever 31 to the position where it is in contact with the screw stop 34. This rotative adjustment of the universal bar 62 is effected by turning the finger piece 65 until the pointer 65 is at the abbreviation Mimeo. and the result of the adjustment is to move both of the contact faces 69 and 70 out of cooperation with the key levers and to bring an edge or face 80 of the universal bar beneath the key levers and at a distance therefrom which is sufiicient to enable the key levers to be actuated without transmitting movement to the universal bar 62 as is indicated by the movement of the key lever 35 from the full to the dotted line position in Fig. 7, thus throwing the ribbon vibrating 1nechanism out of operation. When the universal bar 62 is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 7 the leaf spring 76 bears against the flat face 78 on the universal bar and retains it against accidental displacement from the position to which it has been adjusted. The adjustment of the universal bar 62 from either of the positions shown in Figs. 5 or 6 to that represented in Fig. 7 is effective to change the normal position of the vibrator to the lowest position it occupies by changing the normal position of the lever 31 to the full line position in Fig. 7, the dotted line position of the lever in said figure indicating the normal position of the lever when the universal bar is adjusted to the Fig. 5 position. The ribbon is thus maintained in its lowermost position away from the printing point so that the types may strike directly on the face of a mimeograph sheet on the platen when the parts are adjusted to the positions shown in Fig. 7.
It is desirable when the parts are arranged so that the ribbon vibrating mechanism is inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point, to throw the ribbon feed mechanism out of operation so that no feed of the ribbon shall be effected at the time when the ribbon is not in use and so that the ribbon shall be used equally at all parts thereof and a uniform character of impressions, or impressions of a uniform density, may be produced. I efiect this result in the present instance by providing means for automatically throwing the ribbon feeding mechanism out of operation when the ribbon vibrating mechanism is rendered inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point, and. for automatically throwing the ribbon feed mechanism into operation again when the ribbon vibrating mechanism "is rendered operable. The mechanism for this purpose is shown in Figs. 1, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, the last five of which are diagrammatic views. In Figs. 11 to 14 the gears 17 and 18 and their shafts are shown as if said shafts were vertical, in order that the engagement and disengagement of these gears and the gears 15 and 16 ma be more readily shown. The connecting link 74 between the vibrator actuating lever and the universal bar 62 is provided with an offset finger or actuating device 81 that projects forwardly and upwardly therefrom for cooperation with a double faced circular cam 82 having oppositely disposed inclined faces 83 and 84. This cam 82 is fixed upon the shaft 10 and is arranged so that either of the faces 83 or 8 1 is adapted to cooperate with the actuating device 81 on the link when it receives an upward movement from the positions shown in Figs. 11 and 13 to those indicated in Figs. 12 and 1 1. The particular cam face with which the member 81 is brought into contact depends upon the longitudinal disposition of the shaft 10; that is to say, on whether the beveled pinions 15 and 17 are in mesh to actuate the left-hand spool or the beveled pinions 16 and 18 are in mesh to actuate the righthand ribbon spool. Thus, if the pinions 15 and 17 are in mesh, a feed movement of the carriage causes the left-hand spool to be rotated through the pinions 7 and 8, shaft 10, pinions 15 and 17, shaft 19 and gears 21 and 23. If at this time the device 81 is elevated from the position shown in Fig. 11 to that indicated in Fig. 12, a longitudinal movement of the shaft 10 is effected by the cooperation of the member 81 with the cam face 841 and the pinions 15 and 16 are moved to the positions shown in Fig. 12, thereby effecting a disengagement of the pinions 15 and 17 without, however, effecting an engagement between the pinions 16 and 18, so that the shaft 10 is disconnected from both ribbon spools and the ribbon feed mechanism is thrown out of operation and will remain in this condition as long as the member 81 is maintained in the elevated position shown in Fig. 12, although the shaft 10 may continue to rotate. The shaft 10 has a circumferential groove 85 therein for cooperation with a bifurcated end of a lever 86 which is pivoted at 87 to a fixed portion of the machine and carries a roller which cooperates with a positioning device 89 having two notches 90 and 91 therein with an intermediate cam portion 92. This device is pressed forwardly by a spring 93 so that a spring pressure is exerted through it on the roller 88, whereby the shaft 10 is moved longitudinally in either one direction or the other according to the position of the roller 88 on one side or the other of the cam 92 and is retained in one or the other of its operative positions. This device is similar to that employed in the Monarch machine and its operation is well understood.
hen the device 81 is elevated from the position shown in Fig. 11 to that shown in Fig. 12 a longitudinal movement of the shaft 10 to the right is eflected in the manner stated, but this movement while it is effective to disengage the gears 15 and 17 does not move the gears 15 and 16 to a posi tlon Where they are exactly centered bet-ween the gears 17 and 18 and the movement of the shaft 10 just described is ineffective therefore to carry the roller 88 to the apeX of the cam 92 so that when the member 81 1s withdrawn to the position shown in Fig. 11 the tension of the spring 93 through the device 89 is effective to move the shaft 10 back to the position shown in Figs. 10 and 11 and to restore an engagement between the pinions 15 and 17, whereupon the ribbo n feed mechanism is again rendered operative. A like result is efiected if the pinions 16 and 18 are in engagement, as shown in F 1g. 13. A movement of the member 81 from the position shown in Fig. 13 to that shown in Fig. 14 causes said member to co operate with the cam 83 to effect a longitudinal movement of the shaft 10 from the position shown in Fig. 13 to that indicated in Fig. 14, thereby effecting a disengagement between the pinions 16 and 18. When the member 81 is again withdrawn the tension of the spring 93 exerted through the device 89 will move the shaft longitudinally toward the right and will again effect an engagement between the pinions 16 and 18. The construction and arrangement of the parts is such that the member 81 is out of engagement with both of the cams 83 and 84 when the ribbon vibrator is operative, whether the universal bar 62 be adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 5 to render the ribbon field a operative or is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 6 to render the ribbon field Z) operative. Vhen, however, the universal bar 62 is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 7, the rear end of the lever 31 and'the link 7 f connected thereto are moved upwardly to the highest point that they attain and this movement is effective to move the member 82 up into cooperation with either of the cam faces 83 and 84 and to render the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative. If desired a suitable fixed guide may be employed to cotiperate with the link 74; to prevent a lateral deflection of said link and the member 81 when the latter is brought into cooperation with the cam 82. The locking spring or device -76 retains the universal bar 62 and the parts connected thereto in the position to which they are adjusted so that when the universal bar receives a rotative adjustment to the position indicated in Fig. 7 the member 81 will be held in its uppermost position overcoming the tension of the spring 93 and locking the parts in the inoperative position, the key levers at this time being ineifective to actuate the universal bar 62 and an operation of the printing instrumentalities may be efiected for mimeographing without actuating the vibrating mechanism and while the ribbon mechanism is maintained inoperative. In order to throw the ribbon vibrating and ribbon feed mechanism into operation it is merely necessary to efiect a rotative adjustment of the universal bar 62 to either of the positions shown in Figs. 5 and 6, thereby bringing either of the contact faces 69 or 70 on the universal bar into cooperation with the key levers, at the same time withdrawing the member 81 on the link 74 out of contact with the cam 82. The spring 93 then becomes effective to move the shaft 10 longitudinally in either direction from the position in which it has been held by the member 81 and a rengagement is established between the beveled pinions 15 and 17 or 16 and 18 and the ribbon feed mechanism is again rendered operative. A depression of the key levers at this time effects an operation of the vibrating 1nechanism in the usual manner to interpose either the field a or b in the path of the approaching type, depending on which of the contact faces 69 or 70 of the universal bar 62 is rendered eifective for cooperation with the key levers.
It is believed that the operation of the mechanism will be readily understood from the foregoing description; but a brief description of such operation will, nevertheless, be given. Assuming that the operator desires to use the black field a of the ribbon, it is merely necessary to effect a rotative adj ustment of the universal bar 62 through the finger piece 65 until the pointer 65 is at the word Black, thereby bringing the contact face 69 into position to coiiperate with the key levers 35. An actuation of a key lever at this time is efiective to depress the universal bar 62 and thereby elevate the forward end of the lever 31 from the full to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 5. This movement elevates the vibrator to bring the upper or black field of the ribbon into the path of the approaching type associated with the key lever which has been depressed. The same depression of the key lever is effective to depress the universal bar 52 to actuate the escapement mechanism in the usual manner. Should the operator desire to employ the red field of the ribbon it is merely necessary to turn the finger piece 65 until the pointer 65 turns to the word Red, thereby effecting a rotative adjustment of the universal bar 62 to bring the contact face 7 0 thereof into cotiperation with the key levers 35 as shown in Fig. 6. The effect of this movement is to elevate the forward end of the lever 31 and slightly change the normal position of the vibrator as will be seen by a comparison of Figs. 5 and 6. When a key lever is depressed the lever 31 will be moved from the full to the dotted line posiin order to prepare mimeograph sheets it is merely necessary to turn the finger piece 65 to bring the pointer to the indication Mimeo, thereby effecting a rotative adjustment of the universal bar to bring said bar into the position shown in Fig. 7 The effect of this movement is to move both of the contact faces 69 and 70 outof the path of the key levers and to bring the edge 80 of the universal bar beneath the key levers and to such a position that the depression of the key levers will not operate the universal bar and consequently will not actuate the ribbon vibrating mechanism, the ribbon vibrator at this time being maintained in its lowermost position and out of the pathof the types.
I have shown a modified form of construction in Figs. 8 and 9 in which instead of employing two separate independently operable universal bars, one for the escapement mechanism and the other for the vibrating mechanism, I use a single universal bar for both purposes. Thus, a universal bar frame is provided which is made up of end arms 94 secured to a rock shaft 95 and connected at their rear ends by a cross bar 96 from which extends a rearwardly projecting arm 97.
l A universal bar 98 is provided which is similar in form to the universal bar 62 previously described except that the universal bar 98 is provided with three contact faces 99, 100 and 101 a uniform distance fronrthe pivotal axis of the bar instead of two faces as in the construction previously described. Any one of these three contact faces 99, 100 and 101 of the universal bar 98 is adapted to be brought into operative position to cooperate with the ke 1 levers 35. The adjustment of the parts for determining the field of the ribbon to be employed is the same as that previously described, being effected by means of a finger wheel 65 as before. Thus if the universal bar 98 receives a rotativeadjustment to bring the contact face 99 into co-- operation with the key levers, then the lowermost or red field of the ribbon will be presented for cooperation with a type at each depression of a key lever. If, on the other hand, the contact face 100 is in the operative If a key lever is depressed interposed between the approaching type.

In other words, while the vibrator receives a movement this movement is insuificient to bring it to the printing point and the mechanism is therefore in operative to bring the ribbon to the printing A point, and the machine is at this time effect ive for producing mimeograph sheets. In the modified construction the rearwardly extending arm 97 on the universal bar frame is pivotally connected to an upwardly extending link 102 which is connected in the usual manner with the escapementmechanism so that in this construction the universal bar 98' actuates both the ribbon vibrating mechanism and the escapement mechanism and it is unnecessary to provide two separate and independently operable universal bars, one for the escapement mechanism and the other for the ribbon vibrator and the touch is the same under all adjustments of the universal bar.
Vhen I refer herein to rendering the ribbon moving or vibrating mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon to the operative position or to the printing point I do not wish to be understood by this and like expressions to mean that the ribbon moving mechanism is necessarily maintained at rest as in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 7, such expressions being sufficiently generic to cover a construction such as that shown in Figs. 8 and 9 in which, although the ribbon vibrating means are actuated at each printing operation, they are, nevertheless, under certain conditions, inoperative to move the ribbonto the printing point.
So far as those features of the present invention are concerned which relate to throwing the ribbon out of operation for mimeograph work and for automatically throwing the ribbon feed mechanism out of operation, it is obvious that these features may be used with or without employing a polychrome ribbon or one having fields of different characteristics and with or without the means for bringing any desired field of the ribbon to the printing point, and that the last mentioned means may be employed with or without the means for throwing the vibrating mechanism out of operation and with or without means for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative. I believe that I am the first to provide means for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative when the ribbon vibrating mechanism is rendered inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point and I wish to be understood as claiming the same broadly.
While I have referred to the use of my invention in connection with a polychrome ribbon or one having fields of different characteristics, it is obvious that the invention may be employed when an ordinary single color ribbon is used in which case the field adjusting means may be employed to afford a better widthwise use of the ribbon by using it along parallel lines than is effected by merely using the ribbon along a single line and so far as the mimeograph adjustment is concerned it is immaterial whether a polychrome or single colored ribbon is employed.
The features of the construction embodied in the modification shown in Figs. 8 and 9 which involves the movement of the universal bar and vibrator connected therewith at each actuation of a printing key irrespective of the adjustment of the bar and the provision of means for rendering such movement ineffective to move the ribbon to the printing point is not specifically claimed herein but is claimed in my companion ap plication, Serial No. 337,739, filed of even date herewith.
Various changes may be made without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of .different characteristics, printing instrumentalities, a key-actuated device therefor, a universal bar with which said key-actuated device cooperates, said universal bar being turnable to present different faces to the action of said key actuated device in order to regulate the throw of the vibrator, and intermediate connections between said universal bar and the ribbon.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, printing instrumentalities, a key actuated device therefor, a universal bar with which said key actuated device cooperates, said universal bar being turnable to present different faces to the action of said key actuated device, and intermediate connections between said universal bar and the ribbon, the construction and arrangement being such that the presentation of different faces of the universal bar for cooperation withsaid key actuated device will render different fields of the ribbon operative.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, printing instrumentalities, a key actuated device therefor, a universal bar with which said key actuated device cooperates, said universal bar being turnable to present a plurality of different faces to said key actuated device, and intermediate connections between said universal bar and the ribbon, the construction and arrangement being such that the presentation of a plurality of faces of the universal bar for cooperation with said key actuated device will render difierent fields of the ribbon operative, whereas the presentation of another of said faces on the universal bar to the key actuated device will maintain the ribbon out of operative position during the printing operations.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, a shiftable universal bar operatively connected with the ribbon and having different contact faces thereon, one being employed for each field of the ribbon, and actuating means cooperating with one or another of said contact faces depending on the position to which said universal bar is shifted.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a rlbbon having fields of different characteristics, pivoted arms, a universal bar pivoted to said arms, and connections between said universal bar and the ribbon, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that the universal bar may be turned to a plurality of different positions on its pivot to determine which field of the ribbon shall be presented in the op erative position or to maintain the ribbon in the inoperative position during printing operations as may be desired.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a universal bar, actuating means therefor, intermediate connections between said universal bar and vibrator, and manually operated means for effecting a relative adjustment between the parts of said connections and for adjusting the universal bar relatively to its actuating means, said manually operated means extending from the universal bar substantially in alinement therewith to the outside of the machine.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, an actuating lever therefor, a fixed pivot for said lever, a universal bar, constantly maintained con nections intermediate said universal bar and lever, and means for effecting a relative adjustment between the parts of said connections by an adjustment of the universal bar, said adjustment being effective to vary the throw of the vibrator relative to the printing point.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, a ribbon vibrator, an actuating lever therefor, a fixed pivot for said lever, a universal bar, constantly maintained connections intermediate said universal bar and lever, and means for effecting an adjustment of said connections by an adjustment of the universal bar to determine which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position at printing operations.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, key actuated devices, a universal bar having a plurality of contact faces any of which may. be brought to position to cooperate with said key actuated devices, all of said faces when in the cooperative position being at the same distance from the key actuated devices, and intermediate connections between the universal bar and vibrator, whereby a change in disposition of the contact faces will effect a change in the throw of the vibrator.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a universal bar, operative connections between the universal bar and vibrator, key actuated devices cooperative with said universal bar, and means for adjusting the universal bar to effect a change in the throw of the vibrator at printing operations without changing the distance between the operative contact face of the universal bar and the cooperating contact portions of the key actuated devices.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, an actuating lever therefor, a fixed pivot. for said lever, a universal bar, constantly maintained connections intermediate said. universal bar and lever, means for effecting an adjustment of said connections, ribbon feed mechanism, and means controlled by the adjustment of said connections for throwing the ribbon feed mechanism into and out of operation.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, printing instrumentalities, a key actuated device therefor, a universal bar with which said key actuated device cooperates, said universal bar being turnable to present different faces to the action of said key actuated devices, intermediate connections between said universal bar and the ribbon, the construction and arrangement being such that the presentation of different faces of the universal bar for cooperation with said key actuated device will render difi'erent fields of the ribbon operative or will maintain the ribbon out of operative position entirely as may be desired, ribbon feed mechanism, and means controlled by the turning movement of the universal bar for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism operative or inoperative.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrating means, means for throwing the ribbon vibrating means out of operation, spools for an ink ribbon, a rotary and longitudinally movable shaft for actuating either of said ribbon spools in accordance with the longitudinal position of said shaft, and means cooperating with said shaft for throwing it out of cooperatlon with both of said ribbon spools when the ribbon vibrating means are rendered inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, an actuating lever for said vibrator, a fixed pivot for said lever, a universal bar, constantly maintained and positive connections between said unlversal bar and said lever, means for rendering said mechanism inoperative to bring the ribbon to the printing point, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative when the mechanism for actuating the vibrator is inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, and an adjustable universal bar operatively connected with said ribbon, the adjustment of the universal bar determining the point to which the ribbon shall be vibrated to bring any desired field of the ribbon to the printing point.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, an adjustable universal bar operatively connected with said ribbon to vibrate the same, the adjustment of the universal bar determining the point to which the ribbon shall be vibrated by the universal bar to bring any desired field of the ribbon to the printing point, ribbon feed mechanism, and means controlled by the adjustment of said universal bar for rendering said ribbon feed mechanism operative or inoperative.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, an adjustable universal bar operatively connected with said ribbon to vibrate the same, the adjustment of the universal bar determining the point to which the ribbon shall be vibrated by the universal bar to bring any desired field of the ribbon to the printing point and also determining Whether the vibrator shall be rendered operative or inoperative, ribbon feed mechanism, and means controlled by the adjustment of said universal bar for rendering said ribbon feed mechanism inoperative.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, keys for actuating said vibrator, intermediate connections between said vibrator and keys, said connections including a lever that turns on a fixed pivot, and means cooperating with said connections for changing the throw of the vibrator without changing the extent of its movement.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, a ribbon vibrator, keys for actuating said vibrator, intermediate connections between said vibrator and keys, said connections including a lever that turns on a fiXed pivot, and means cooperating with said connections for changing the normal position of the vibrator in order to change the throw of the vibrator without changing the extent of its movement, whereby any desired field of the ribbon may be rendered operative.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, printing keys, a universal bar controlled by said printing keys and controlling said ribbon and capable of being disposed in difierent ways, and means controlled by the disposition of the universal bar for varying the throw of the ribbon relative to the printing point when the ribbon is moved by an actuation of the printing keys, thereby determining which field of the ribbon shall be presented in operative position. I
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, printing keys, 2. universal bar controlled by said printing keys and controlling said ribbon and capable of being disposed in diiferent ways, and means controlled by the disposition of the universal bar for varying the throw of the ribbon relative to the printing point when the ribbon is moved by an actuation of the printing keys, thereby determining which field of the ribbon shall be presented in operative position, said means including means operable at will for maintaining the ribbon out of the operative position at printing operations.
22. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon, a ribbon vibrator, a universal bar, means for connecting said ribbon vibrator and universal bar, printing keys, means actuated by an operation of said keys for operating the universal bar, and means for changing the position of the universal bar relative to said key-actuated means to determine the position relative to the printing point to which the vibrator is moved by the operation of said key-actuated means.
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a universal bar for the carriage escapement mechanism, a ribbon vibrator, a ribbon capable of use along either of a plurality of longitudinal fields, a separate universal bar connected with said vibrator for actuating it, and means for changing the relation of said last mentioned universal bar to its actuating means and for thereby changing the throw of the vibrator relative to the printing point, thus determining which field 'of'the ribbon shall be presented in operative position, said last mentioned means including means operable at will for rendering the mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon to the operative position.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of difierent characteristics, pivoted arms, a universal bar pivoted to said arms, and connections independent of said pivoted arms between said universal bar and the ribbon whereby a movement of the universal bar on its pivoted arms will change the normal position of the ribbon.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, pivoted arms, a universal bar movable in bearings in said arms, and connections independent of said pivoted arms between said universal bar and the ribbon, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that the movement of the universal bar in its bearings changes the normal position of the ribbon and determines which field of the ribbon shall be presented in the operative position or renders the mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon to the operative position as may be desired.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon, pivoted arms, a universal bar pivoted to said arms for movement to a plurality of operative positions, connections between said universal bar and the ribbon,
and means for maintaining the universal bar against accidental displacement from the position to which it'is turned on its pivots.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon, and ribbon vibrating mechanism comprising a universal bar movable to different positions relative to its actuating means, the universal bar being operative in a plurality of such positions, and in one of said difierent positions rendering the vibrating mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of difiierent characteristics, and ribbon vibrating mechanism comprising a universal bar movable to difi'erent operative positions relative to its actuating means and the change of position of which determines which field of the ribbon shall be moved at each actuation to operative position.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, escapement mechanism therefor, a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, and ribbon vibrating mechanism comprising a universal bar independent of the escapement mechanism and movable to different operative positions relative to its actuating means and the change of position of which determines which field of the ribbon shall be moved at each actuation to operative position.
80. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, and ribbon vibrating mechanism comprising a universal bar independent of the carriage escapement mechanism and adjustable to different positions relative to its actuating means, the universal bar being operative in a plurality of such positions and the change of said universal bar from one operative position to another determining which field of the ribbon shall be presented to operative position and the movement of said universal bar to another position rendering the mechanism inoperative to vibrate the ribbon to operative posltion.
31. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, and a universal bar operatively connected to said ribbon and adjustable to any one of three positions and in two of which positions the universal bar is operative to move the ribbon to operative position at each printing operation, the operative position to which the universal bar is adjusted determining which field of the rib bon shall be moved to operative position at each printing operation, and the universal bar being inoperative to move the ribbon to operative position when it is in the third position. I
32. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon, printing keys, a univer sal bar actuated thereby, permanently maintained connections between said universal bar and ribbon, whereby said universal bar may move said ribbon to operative position, means for shifting said connections at the universal bar for varying the throw of the ribbon relative to the printing point and for thereby bringing different fields of the ribbon to the printing point under control of the universal bar and printing keys and for rendering the universal bar inoperative to move the ribbon to operative position, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for automatically rendering the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative when the universal bar is inoperative to move the ribbon to operative position.
33. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon, a universal bar operatively connected to said ribbon, printing keys, actuating means under control of the printing keys for operating said universal,
bar, means for adjusting said universal bar to a plurality of different operative positions relative to its said actuating means and for thereby rendering said universal bar operative to move different fields of the ribbon to operative position at printing operations, said adjusting means also including means whereby another adjustment of the universal bar may be effected to render said actuating means inoperative to move the universal bar, means for automatically effecting a longitudinal feed of the ribbon at each printing operation, and means controlled by the adjustment of said universal bar for automatically throwing the ribbon feeding means out of operation when said actuating means are rendered inoperative to move the universal bar and for automatically throwing the ribbon feeding means into operation when said actuating means are operative to move the universal bar.
34. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, controlling means for determining which field of the ribbon shall be presented to the printing point at printing operations or for preventing the ribbon from moving to the printing point during the operation of the machine as may be desired, ribbon feed mechanism, and means actuated by said controlling means for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism operative or inoperative.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a ribbon divided into fields of different characteristics, a universal bar capable of being differently disposed, means controlled by the disposition of the universal bar for determining which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position at printing operations or for maintaining the ribbon out of the operative position as may be desired, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative when the ribbon is maintained out of the operative position.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a universal bar for the carriage escapement mechanism, a ribbon vibrator, a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, a separate universal bar connected with said vibrator for actuating it, means for changing the relation of said last mentioned universal bar to its actuating means and for thereby determining which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative posi tion during printing operations or for rendering the mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon to the operative position as may be desired, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for rendering the ribbon feed mechanism inoperative when the mechanism is inoperative to move the ribbon to operative position.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, pivoted arms, a universal bar movable in bearin in said arms, connections between sai universal bar and the ribbon, the construction and arrangement of the parts being such that the movement of the universal bar in its bearings determines which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position during printing operations or renders the mechanism inoperative to move the ribbon to the operative position determines which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position during printing operations or renders the mechanism in operative to vibrate the ribbon to o erative position, ribbon feed mechanism, an means for rendering said ribbon feed mechanism inoperative when said ribbon vibrating mechanism is inoperative to move the ribbon to operative position.
39. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, ribbon vibrating mechanism comprising a universal bar independent of the carriage escapement mechanism and adjustable to different positions relative to its actuating means and the change of position of which determines which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position during printing operations or renders the mechanism inoperative to vibrate the ribbon to operative position, ribbon feed mechanism, and means controlled by an adjustment of said universal bar for throwing said ribbon feed mechanism into and out of operation.
40. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having a plurality of fields of different characteristics, printing keys, a universal bar actuated by said printing keys, permanently maintained connections between said universal bar and ribbon for moving said ribbon to operative position at printing operations, means for shifting said connections at the universal bar for determining which field of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position at the actua -tion of the printing keys or for rendering the universal bar inoperative to move the ribbon to operative position as may be desired, ribbon feed mechanism, and means controlled by the adjustment of said connections for throwing the ribbon feed mechanism into and out of operation.
41. Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a universal bar, positive and constantly maintained connections between the universal bar and vibrator, means for effecting a relative adjustment of the parts to position the ribbon vibrator in any one of a plurality of normal positions, an adjustment of the vibrator to different normal positions determining which field of the ribbon shall be moved tooperative posi tion at printing operations, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for throwing said feed mechanism out of operation when the vibrator is positioned in a certain one of the plurality of normal positions to which it may be adjusted.

In atypewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having two different fields, a universal bar operatively connected to said ribbon and adjustable to any one of three positions, the position to which the universal bar is adjusted determining which of the two fields of the ribbon shall be moved to operative position at printing operations or whether or not the universal bar shall be rendered inoperative, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for throwing the feed mechanism out of operation when said universal bar is rendered inoperative.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of an escapement, a ribbon vibrator, a ribbon having fields of difi erent characteristics, a universal bar for the escapement, a second universal bar, intermediate connections between said second universal bar and vibrator, key levers operative directly on both of said universal bars, and means for effecting a variation in the throw of the vibrator at printing operations to bring one or another field of the ribbon to the printing point or for enabling the key levers to operate the universal bar for the escapementwithout actuating the vibrator, the second universal bar or said intermediate connections.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of difierent characteristics, a ribbon vibrator, printing keys, a universal bar which actuates said vibrator and which is actuated by said printing keys, and means for enabling said finger keys to be actuated without actuating said universal bar and for determining the point to which the vibrator shall be moved by said printing keys and thus to move any desired field of the ribbon to operative position at printing operations.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of difierent characteristics, a ribbon vibrator, printing keys, means intermediate said printing keys and vibrator for actuating the vibrator, and means for enabling the printing keys to be actuated without imparting movement to any of the intermediate means and for causing the vibrator to be moved to different points and thus move any desired field of the ribbon to the operative position under control of the printing keys.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, a ribbon vibrator, printing keys, means intermediate said printing keys and vibrator for actuating the vibrator, means for enabling the printing keys to be actuated without imparting movement to any of the intermediate means and for causing the vibrator to be moved under control of the printing keys to different points to bring any desired field of the ribbon to the operative position at printing operations, ribbon feed mechanism, and means for look ing the ribbon feed mechanism out of operation when said intermediate means are rendered inoperative.
47. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a power driven carriage, ribbon feed mechanism actuated by the power employed to move said carriage, a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, two universal bars, printing key levers operative directly on both of said universal bars, carriage feed mechanism actuated by one of said universal bars and a ribbon vibrator actuated by the other, means for efiecting a variation in the throw of the vibrator at printing operations to bring one or another field of the ribbon to the printing point or for rendering the vibrator actuating universal bar operative or inoperative to move the ribbon to the printing point, and means for automaticallythrowin the ribbon feed mechanism into or out 0? operation when said last mentioned means are actuated.
48. In a typewrlting machine, the comblnation of a ribbon having fields of different characteristics, a power driven carriage, ribbon feed mechanism actuated by the power employed to move said carriage, two universal bars, printing key levers operative on both of said universal bars, carriage feed mechanism actuated by one of said universal bars, a ribbon vibrator actuated by the other universal bar, means for regulating the mechanism to brin any desired field of the ribbon to the printing point under control of ber A.
