DUANE, a citizen of the United States, residing in East lartford. in the county of l artford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewritingiiachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines. and is herein disclosed as applied to the )lat n-seale of an Underwood ty oewriting machine. In such machines, the scale has usually hither 50 been made independent of the case-shift mechanism, with the result that as as the platen rises in the case-shift operation, it rises away from the scale. Ac cording to the present invention, the scale may rise with the platen at the caseshift operation, with the result that characters written in the upper case will lie adjacent the scale wnile in the upper case, just as characters written in the lower case are adjacent the scale in the ordinary machine.
To obtain this result, there is provided a mechanism for supporting the platen-scale, such that the motion of the shift frame about its axis may be converted into sub stantially vertical motion for the scale adjacent the platen. Each end of the scale is also supported independently, and each linksupport is connected to the shift frame.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In the Underwood typewriting machine, character keys 1, when depressed. carry down their key-levers 2, thereby sub-levers 3 to carry type-bars l upwardly and rearwardly. so that lower-case types 5 and upper-case types 6 on the type-bars will print against the front side of a platen 7 which is rotatably mounted in the platen frame 8. In order to enable the typist to quickly and accurately identify the position of thh characters written on a w rlr-sheet passed around the platen 7, there is provided a scale-plate 20, adjacent the platen and graduated at letter-space intervals t, correspond to the spacing of the fronscale 26. Lhe scale-plate 25 is relatively short and comprises two wings extending on either side of a slot 27 the type-guide 28,the slot being deep enough to allow the lower-case type 5 to be clear of the scale-plate when writing; in upper-case position.
According to the present intention, scale 25 is adapted to rise with the platen when the latter is raised by the rail 2i. thus raise the scale-plate 25. each bell cranlr 20 is provided with a plate 29, on which is fast a forwarally-extending 3 each arm connected to raise a frame or support 31 for its end of the scale-plate Fitch support 31 is pivoted on a. bra .t 32, which extends toward the front or Lllc, macl'iine, there being one hraclret at each side sf the i achine, and each bracket 32 is formed of a hollow square of sheet-metal, so that can lie around the mounting 33 of the usual ribbon-spool-shaft. To enable the brz t. 32 to he readily attached to the machiu, each is provided with anopeningugh which may pass the usual screw wir-h holds the bracket 36 of the ribbon-spool to the frame of the machine. By having the brackets 32 made in the form of hollow squares, it is possible to have two'widely separated pivots 38 near the front of the machine, one pivot at the end of each extremity of each bracket for tie support or frame 31, thus giving great rigidity to the support of each end of the scale-plate 25, with the result that the scale-plate itself may be exceedingly light. The pivots 38 pass through turned-up cars 39 on the brackets and turned-up ears 40 on the frames 31. To enable the frames 31 to be supported-in this way, each is formed as a hollow square having sides 41, said square having one edge 42 lying near the plane of the segment 43. To attach the scaleplate 25 to the hollow squares n, eachhollow square 41 has an ear L4 turnedup therefrom, and extending over the surface of the top of the segment 4:3, and thenbent parallel to the scale-plate 25. To each ear is attached, by a pair of screws 15, abracket 4C6 having a turned-over end 4.? adapted to embrace and be pivoted to turned-up ears d8 on the lower edge of the'scale-plate 25 Since thereis a pair of cars 48 at each end of the scale-plate 25 and a bracket 46 pivoted to said ears, the two ends of the scaleplate 25 are strongly and independently supported from the ends of the shift frame, thus avoiding all tendency to twist the scale-plate 25. At the same time, there is nothing in front of the type-guide to interfere either with the type-bars or with the View of the writing on the work-sheet.
The connections for lifting the frames 31 include short, nearly vertical, links 4 9, pivoted to the arms 80 and also pivoted to forwardly extending arms 50, which, in turn, are pivoted at 51. to downward arms or projections 52 of the brackets 32. Thus, each pivoted arm 50 forms a member which rocks nearly vertically whenever the caseshift-key 17 is depressed, with the result that it can carry up, practically vertically, a link 53pivoted to it, and also pivoted to adownwardly-turned earM of its frame 31.
In order to secure the desirable uniformity of operation in the scaleraising mechanism, there is provided a link 49, an arm-50, an arm 52, and a link 53 for each frame 31, with the result that the platen-scale 25 is raised symmetrically and uniformly at both ends whenever the shift frame, which includes the rail 21, is raised.
In order to hold the platen-scale 25 against the platen, there are provided downwardlyextending springy fingers 55 stamped out of the scale-plate, one finger below each pair of ears 48, said fingers adapted to lie against the face of the segment 43, and thereby swing the upper end of the scaleplate 25 against the platen. In uppercase position, the scale-plate 25 may be held upright by the humps 60 on the fingers 55 which are sprung against the interiors of the brackets 46, because of the pressure of the fingers 55 on the segment 43. T 0 form a rest for the frame 31 in its lower-case position, each ear 54 has a lug 56 extending forwardly therefrom; each lug adapted to rest on the rear edge 57 of the bracket 32. To steady the frames 31 in their upper positions, each ear 5 is provided with a second lug 58, which is adapted to strike the edge 5. when the scale-plate 25 is raised.
A frame 31 and its arm 50 connected by a link form a quasi-parallel motion device, causing the scale-plate 25' to closely follow the platen which is guided by the quasi-parallel motion device formed by the arms or links 23 and bell-cranks 20.
It will be observed that the device herein illustrated is adaptedto be attached to any ordinary Underwood typewriting machine,
The principal screws for attachingthe'hollow square brackets 32 may be the usual screws, or somewhat longerscrews, adapted to fit the usual holes 34-. In order to give additional rigidity to the device, the rear parts of the brackets 39, where'neare'st to the typeguide. 28, may be provided with ears 61 adapted to fit against the bottom'of the usual extensions 62'of the ribbon-spoolbrackets 36, and to be screwedthereto Variations may be resorted to within the scope of theinvention, and portions of the improvements may be used'without others.
Having thus described my inven I:
claim: I I

The combination with a typewriting machine having a segment and a pair of ribbon-supporting devices one at each side of the segment, of a platen, a shift-frame for the platen, a scale in front of said platen, a support for each end of said scale pivoted to thecorrcsponding ribbon-supporting device, and a linkage between s'aid'shift-frame and each of the scale-supports for shifting said scale with said platen.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine having a segment and a pair of 1'ibbon-supporting devices one at'each side of the segment, of a platen, a shift-frame for the platen, ascale in front of said platen, support for each end of said scale pivoted to the corresponding ribben su r porting device, and a parallel-motion linkage between said shift-frame and each of the scale-supports for rocking said supports to shift said scale with said platen.
3. In a typewriting machine having a segment and a platen shift-frame, the com bination with a platen, of a sca'le therefor,
a swinging support in front of the segment on which the scale is plvoted, and a guiding a. In a typewriting machine having a segment and a platen shift-frame, the combination with a platen, of a scale therefor, a swinging support in front of the segment on which the scale is pivoted, and springs extending from the scale and bearing against the segment to hold the scale upright.
5. In a typewriting machine having a segmont and a platen shiftframe, the combination with a platen, of a scale therefor, a swinging support in front of the segment on which the scale is pivoted, springs extending from the scale and bearing against the segment to hold the scale upright, and means forming part of the swinging support to hold the springs against the segment.
6. In a typewriting machine having a type segment, a platen, and a shift-frame, the combination with a platen scale, of a frame on which the scale is pivoted, pivots for said frame in front of the platen and substantially within the limits of the vertical shifting of the platen, and means for holding the scale against the platen.
7. In a typewriting machine having a type segment and a platen shift-frame, the combination with a platen, of a scale therefor, a pivot bar in front of the segment to support the scale, and a link connecting the scale to the shift-frame.
S. In a typewriting machine having a segment and a platen shift-frame, the com bination with a platen and a scale therefor, of a support independent of the platen for each end of the scale, pivots in front of the segment for said supports, and a link from each support to the shift-frame.
9. In a typewriting machine having a segment and a platen shift-frame, the combination with a platen and a scale therefor, of a support independent of the platen for each end of the scale, pivots in front of the segment for said supports, a link from each support to the shift-frame, pivots by which the scale is carried on its support, and means for holding the scale upright on its pivots.
10. The combination with a typewriting machine having a segment and a pair of ribbon-supporting devices one at each side of the segment, of a platen, a shift-frame for the platen, a scale in front of said platen, a support for each end of said scale comprising a frame pivoted at one edge to a ribbonsupporting device and having an arm fixed to a parallel edge and pivoted to said scale,
depending vertical members on an adjacent edge of said scale-support, a link con necting said vertical members, and means connecting said shift-frame and link for rocking the scale-support to shift the scale with the platen.
11. The combination with a typewriting machine having a segment and a ribbonsupporting device, of a platen, a shift-frame for the platen, a scale support comprising a frame embracing said supporting device, a pivot on each end of the scale-supporting deviceto guide it, and a link connecting said scale support to the shift-frame.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a segment and a pair of ribbon-supporting devices, one at each side of the segment, of a platen, a shift-frame for the platen, a scale, a scale support for each end of the scale, each support comprising a frame embracing a ribbon-supporting de vice, a pivot at each end of each scale support to guide it, and a link connecting each scale support to the frame.
13. The combination with a platen and a shift-frame, of a scale for the platen, a quasi-parallel motion mounting for each end of the scale, and a link connecting each end of the shift-frame to its mounting to cause the ends of the scale to move together.

In a typewriting machine having asegment and a platen, the combination with a platen-shift-frame, of a scale-plate for the platen, a swinging support at each side of the segment and in front thereof on which the scale-plate is pivoted, a guide for the scale-plate cooperating with the segment, and a link for each support for caus ing the two ends of the scale-plate to move together.
15. In a typewriting machine having a segment and a platen, the combination with a platen shift-frame, of a platen scale, a pair of pivoted bars in front of the segment to support the scale at each end there of, and a link at each end of the shif frarne connecting the scale to the shiftframe.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a segment and a ribbonsupporting device, of a platen, a scale therefor, a shift-frame for the platen, a scale support comprising a frame embracing said supporting device, a pivot at each end o the scale-supporting device to guide it, a link connecting said scale support to the shift-frame, pivots on the scale support for supporting the scale, and spring guides for holding the scale vertical.

In a typewritingmachine having a segment and a platen shift-frame, the combination with a platen and scale therefor, of a support independent of the platen for each end of the scale, pivots in front of the segment for said supports, a link from each support to the shift-frame, and lugs for steadying the scale support at each end of the throw of the scale when shifted.
