IMPROVEMENT IN MOCCASlN-BOOTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,234, dated May 27, 1873; application filed January 28, 1873.

To all whomrit may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. BUCK, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moccasin-Boots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and. exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin gdrawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective of my invention.

The object of my invention is to provide a moccasin which will diminish the labor of manufacture by lessening the number of seams to be sewed, which can be made to fit more or less closely around the top at pleasure, and which will prevent the access of snow or dirt to the feet of the wearer.

Reference to the drawing exhibits my device.

My moccasin a is made in the manner of the ordinary boot-moccasin, except that one side of the leg is left open and unstitched, the rear part of the leg a slightly overlapping the front part d, exactly as it would if the parts were to be united by a lap-seam. A lap-welt, e, is then stitched to the front part 01, as shown, sufficiently wide to cover the junction of the parts, and it is also stitched across the bottom. It will be seen that the rear part c of the leg is confined between this lap-welt and the front part d of the boot, and is capable of sliding in and out between the two, so as to enlarge or contract the size of the leg, particularly at the top, while the welt covering the opening prevents the access of dirt. Straps and buckles ff, or similar devices, are secured to the front and rear parts of the leg to secure them toill gether, and by them the size of the leg may be regulated as desired, in the manner specified.

I do not claim a flap arranged to overlap another flap on the front of a shoe, as shown in the patent of J. Goykendall, September 6, 1870. Neither do I claim a gore secured to the side pieces of the leg of a shoe, filling the opening, as in the case of (l. G. Morse, June 4,1872. Nor do I claim a shoe made with two flies on opposite sides of the lacing-slit, as in Joel Putnams patent of August. 18, 1872. These all differ in construction from'my invention. My device applies to the ordinary bootpattern moccasin shown in the drawing, out as usual and made as usual, but with one of the side leg-seams common to all moccasins of this class left unsewed, and one common lap-welt .or flap sewed upon the side and across the bottom to cover the opening thusleft. It is simpler and more economical in construction, and at the same time fully asjeffective as any of the devices shown, and canfbe applied to any boot-moccasin without altering itfurther than to rip the side seam.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with a moccasinof the ordinary boot-pattern, as shown'inthe drawing, having one side seam left open and unstitched, the lap-welt or flap 0, attached and arranged as set forth and shown, to cover said opening, as and for the purposes described.
