Description
w. E. PUTNAM.
Gaiters.
N0 143186, PatentedSeptember23, 873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM E. PUTNAM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO 'W. E. PUTNAM Se COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,186, dated September 23, 1873; application iiled April 5, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. PUTNAM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and to the front or instep opening of a gaiter or` brogan; one edge of such gore being stitched to the body of the upper, and the other to the lapel, in such manner as to be folded With the lapel when the latter is drawn over and buckled, and thereby render the gaiter as impervious to Water and dust as if the gaiter were un` provided with an instep-opening.
In the aforementioned drawings, A denotes the upper, B the sole, and O the heel, of a gaiter embodying myimprovement. a is the instep; b, the toe portion; o c, the ankle, and d d, the heel parts. e is the lapel, and f the folding gore. The lapel e folds over, and is buckled to the ankle part c. Within this opening a gore, f, is inserted, such gore having the shape as shown in Fig. 2. Oneside of the said gore is attached to the side of the lesser instep portion, and the other to the lapel, at or near its edge, by a continuous line of sewing, as shown in Fig. 2.
This gore I prefer to make of calfskin, or other leather thinner than that of the main portion of the upper, in order that the same may more readily fold and conform to the c011- tour of the Wearers instep.
By my application of the gore to theinstcpopening, as described, the dirt and other foreign matter will be equally excluded from the gaiter, Whether the lapel be folded over the opening to a greater or less extent, in order to fit insteps of different heights.
I do not claim the invention as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 125,505, nor any feature thereof', as my invention rests solely upon an improvement thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a gaiter or shoe having a front or instep opening and an overlapping fla-p, a gore-piece, secured at' one edge to the flap, and at the other edge to the leather flanking one side of the instep or front opening, as herein shown and described, for the purposes specified.
