Be it known that I, DAVID RUTHERFORD Iioss, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 87 Munro street, Coburg, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Superheaters in Steam- Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to steam superheaters of the type comprising a header or box divided into compartments that are in communication with each other through Field tubes which depend from the header or box in the path of the hot gases escapingfrom the flue tubes of a locomotive or other boiler into the smoke box in which the superheater is located. The objectof the invention is to provide an improved construction of such a superheater adapted to eii'ect the superheating more efficiently than in' existing'arrangements of the kind statedp For thispurpose according to the invention the saturated steam inlet to the header, and the superheated steam "outlet therefromare located about midway of the length of the header in substantiallyone commbn lane, as will be hereinafter more particular y described in conjunction with other features of the invention. f

The end compartments 6 of the box or header are in free communication through passages in, see Figs. 5 and 10, with an in let branch m leading from the steam space above the water in the boiler 01..
Transverse partitions or webs 0 downwardly extendingfrom the bottom wall 17 of the upper part a of the header divide the chamber formed by and between the said bottom wall and a plate q, that is suitably secured to the marginal flange of the part a, into a middle compartment 1' and two end compartments t. Through groups 1 of Field tubes, the upper end compartments 0, in communication with the common saturated steam inlet m, are placed in communication with the lower end compartment t, while the groups 2 of Field tubes place the-said lower end compartments 6 in communication with the long upper compartment d. In this way the steam flowing between the inner and outer Field tubes becomes effectively superheated. In addition to the outer surfaces of the Field tubes directly receiving the heat, the header plate 9 from whence they depend will also be exposed to the heat waves, and will assist in keeping the compartments above in a similarlyheated condition. p
I do not confine myself arbitrarily to the arrangement of the compartments in regard to the groups of inlet tubes or outlet tubes.
but I have found by experiment that the number of compartments shown in the superheater illustrated may be used with satisfactory results. periment that this arrangement will permit a total of several hundred of such tubes being employed.
I would point out thatthe superheater embodying my invention and arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, acts as a deflector, so that a locomotive using it can dispense with the brick arch usually employedwith other forms of superheaters. The invention also acts as a partial spark arrester, and the whole can be easily cleaned with ajet of dry steam or alternatively compressed air. 5
The superheater being placed behind the throttle valve insures superheated steam passingdirect to the cylinders on the open ing of such valve. The ends of the depending outer tubes are closed.
I claim i 1. A steam super-heater comprising a body member in which there are tiers of compartments, one tier having end compart ments and an intermediate compartment, together with a longitudinal compartment adjacent the aforesaidfcompartments, an-
7 other tier having end compartments and a central compartment, and a pluralityof tubes making connection from the end compartments in the said first tier thereof to the end compartments in the s'econd' tier thereof, then from the end compartments in the said second 'tier to the longitudinal compartment in the first tier, then from the sald longitudinal compartment in the first I have found by ex--- tier to the central compartment in the second tier, and finally from the central compartment in the second tier to the intermediate compartment in thefirst tier.
2. A steam super-heater comprising a body in which there are tiers of adjacent substantially parallel compartments, one tier having end compartments, a compartment intermediate of the end compartments and a longitudinal compartment adjacent the aforesaid compartments, while in the other tier there are end compartments and a central compartment, and a plurality of Field tubes making communication from the end compartments in the said first tier thereof to the end compartments in the second tier thereof, then from the end compartments in thesaid second tier to the longitudinal compartment in the first tier, then from the said longitudinal compartment in the, first tier to the central compartment in the second tier, and finally from the central compartment in the second tier to the intermediate compartment in the first tier.
3. A steam superheater comprising a body in which there is-provided'an upper tier of compartments and a substantially parallel lower tier of compartments, the upper tier having end compartments, a compartment intermediate thereof and a longitudinal compartment adjacent the aforesaid comcompartments in the said second tier to the longitudinal compartment in the first tier, then from the said longitudinal compartment in the first'tierto the central compart ment in the second tier, "and finally from the central compartment in the second tier to the intermediate compartment in the first tier.

A steam superheater comprising a body having a saturated steam inlet'and comprising a plurality of tiers substantially parallel and adjacent,-the outer'tier having end compartments, a' compartment intermediate of the'same and alongitudinal compart ment adj acent the aforesaid compartments with the other tier having end compartments and a central compartment, the intermediate compartmentin the first tier being a super heated steam compartment and having pass sages from the steam inlet leading over the samepto the said' end compartments in the first aforesaid tier thereof, there also being an outlet connectionleading from the said super heated steam compartment, and a plurality of tubes making connection from the end compartments in the first tier to the end compartments in the second tier,
