STEAlYIrSUPERHEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 191.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that ANDREW BOLTON, who was a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of i9 Deansgate, Manchester, in the county oit Lancaster, England, but is now deceased, and whose executrix is Emmnnrn ANNE BOLTON, a subject of the King oit Great Britain and Ireland, and resident ot Holly Lodge, Demesne Road, lvlanchester, S. lV., England, did invent a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to steam superheaters for locomotives or locomotive or other type boilers, its object being to provide an improved form or arrangement ot super heater, which while it provides an efficient superheating action upon the steam passing therethrough, is economical to malte and simple to tit in position.
Referring to the two accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings z-Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a superheater constructed in accordance with his invention and applied to a locomotive. Fig. 2 is an end elevation partly in section of said superheater.
The same reference letters in the two views indicate the same parts.
lle forms the superheatin'g elements from a number of Field tubes (1` extending into some or all of the boiler smoke tubes b, in a known manner. The said tubes a are supported by a plurality of headers c suspended from the saturated steam inlet and superheated steam outlet pipes or connections (Z and e respectively. Each header has a division plate or partition f therein to receive the inner elements of the Field tubes and a further division piece g extending between the steam inlet and outlet ports (E, e for directing the steam from the inlet through one portion of the Field tubes, the said steam being then directed through the remainder of said tubes and to the outlet connection c at the other side of the division piece (7 referred to. The large or outer elements oit the Field tubes are secured to the outer wall of the header. The inlet and outlet ports ol the header are adjacent to one another, but hc preferably makes the saturated and superheated steam connections (l, c leading to or from said header, separate from one another so as to allow for relative expansion.
Each headeiI c is secured in place by bolting or otherwise and can be readily removed from position without interfering with the adjacent headers.
lf desired, he may malte the tube plate g oit each header detachable from the latter so that the outer elements of the Field tubes can be expanded therein.
The diaphragm or division plate f into which the inner elements ol the Field tubes are secured, may be of arched formation and the header itselit preferably tapers olf toward its lower end as shown. The division wall between the inlet and outlet sides of the header also preferably inclines toward the vertical wall of the superheater before joining the diaphragm aforesaid into which the inner elements ot the Field tubes are secured. 'lhe arrangenient of parts gives a compact design or construction of superheater. The Field tubes a are preferably arranged in vertical rows as shown, each row being supported by one header. One or more tubes is or are inserted within each of the smoke tubes.
,l-lis super-heater may be employed in connection with marine or other types of boiler.
Having now described his invention what he claims as new and desires to secure by Letters Patent is:-
ln steam superheaters, in combination, a plurality of headers, a saturated steam inlet and a superheated steam outlet to cach of said headers, a division wall extending between said inlet and outlet, a diaphragm extending across said header and joined by In testimony WhereofI aiiximy signature 10 the division Wall at a point midway between in the presence of two Witnesses.
the ends of the diaphragm, open ended tubes ELIZABETH ANNE BOLTON supported atone end by said diaphrafrm f some of said tubes communicating With bthe Ememhm of the estate of Andew BOZOW steam inlet and the remainder With the steam deaged' outlet, and tubes closed at one end supported Witnesses:
around the open ended tubes by said header, ARTHUR HUGHEs, substantially as described. HILDA HUGHES.
