JOHN D. rnnnnsnn, or Monson, WYOMING.
FIREARM,
Application filed December 13, 1919. Serial 1\To. 34,4,677.v
To all wlw/m. t may concern i Be it known that l, JOHN D. PEDnRsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and State of lllyoming, -have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is aspecification.
rllhis invention relates more especially to fire-control mechanisms for use in auto-loading small-arms, and more particularly to that class of such mechanisms which is illustrated and described in my Patent No. 1,348,733, dated'August 3, 1920, filed July 17, 1919. A principal object of the present improvements is to provide an organization of firecontrol mechanism in which the operation of certain of the coacting members shall be more simple in character, and'in which an improved safety-grip control shall be coactive with firing-train and its associated devices, further objects and advanf tages are hereinafter explained in the course of the description. Y
, Certain of the principal features of my present improvements are shown in Figs. 80, V81, 82 and 83 kofl said patent, in which I these featuresl are described asta modiiication that is within the scope of claims therein broadly defined. In this present application, however, certain of the details of the mechanism, shown in said views of said prior application, in a more simple form, are further improved in construction and arrangement, andare also employed in new combinations not disclosed in said prior appli. cation.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, Figure 1, is a side view, and Fig. 2 an end vien7 (as seen from'the right-'handinFig 1), of one kind 1 of auto-loading pistols to which my present improvements are applicable; 'these two views correspond, respectively, with Figs.' 1 and Q of said patent.
VFig. 3, is a. side view, on an enlarged scale, ofthe rearward portion of the pistol, the
forwardend being omitted, and the frame shown broken away for illustrating the interior mechanism; this view corresponds, in large part, with Fig. 3 of 'said patent, in which the various operable parts not restricted to the present invention, are more fully illustrated and described. n
Fig. 4;, is a horizontal section,in plan view, of the rear portion of the pistol on the line el-fi of Fig. 3, with the sliding breechaction of the pistol removed, and 'showing A i the pistol locked by the slidable member or controller, the hammer and searlocked, the trigger member out of contact with the disconnector located between it andthe sear,
and the sear in contact with said disconnector and out 0f contact with said controller.I
Fig. 5a, is anend vview in vertical section on the line 5?53, of Fig. 3, vof the rear portion of they pistol showing details of my firel control mechanism.
Fig. 6, is a side view of the rear endI portion of the pistol showing partsof my fire control mechanism, the hammer being in'fring'position, the sliding `breechaction locked by said controller, the hammer and sear locked, the trigger member, preparatory to firing, in contact with said disconnector and out of contact with said controller. f
f Fig. 7, is a side view of aV portion of the rear end ofthe pistol showing parts of my fire control mechanism, the hammer being in fired position, the breechaction unlocked from the slidable controller, the hammer and Sear unlocked, the trigger-member, afterniring, in contact withsaid disconnector, and
the sear out of contact with said disconnector and in contact with said controller.
Fig. S, is a side viewfof the rear portion ofthe pistol sh'owingfthe breechact-ioili moved rearwardly to cock the pistol and unlock from the "controller, lthe hammer vbeing in` course of movement to firing posi'- tion and not yet positively engaged with the sear, the trigger-member being in contact with Said' disconnector prior to forward movement of the trigger-member', andthe if! sear in contact lwith said disconnector and out of contact with said controller.
Similar reference characters or numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.'Y i i f l My fire control mechanism comprises,to gether with the various parts hereinafter described, a firing member or hammer H,
movable to firing vposition and to fired posiv tion. The firing member or hammerl in the present embodiment of my invention is moved to firing or cocked position by 4enga ement'therewith of a roller 3, on the c. sli ing breechaction or mainY slide C of tho pistol, as the sliding breechaction or mainslide C is moved rearwardlywhen the pistol is discharged. The firing member or hammer H is provided with a firing-notch or cock-notch 8j and an eccentric cam face 8k.
A The Sear member S is provided with a locking shoulder 17b for engaging the cocknotch 8i, and with a face 17, for engaging the eccentric cam face v8k of the tiring member or hammer H, and with arms 17f, only one of which arms is shown in the views, for engaging the slidablemember or controller The sear member S is provided with a downwardly extending portion which af- 'fords a face 17e for engagement therewith of a contactor, and with an end 17 d which. engages a disconnector, such contactor and such disconnector being hereinafter described.
The slidable member or controller N is movable upwardly and downwardly between slide- faces 15 and 16, formed in the frame and grip-stock of the pistol. rl`he slidable member or controller N has at its upper end a projecting portion or end 14d which is engageable with the sliding breech action of the pistol when the slidable member or controller N is in upward position, to prevent rearward` movement of the sliding breech action. v
The slidable member or controller N is provided'with a shoulder 141 having upper engaging surfaces 14e with which the arms 1-7b of the sear member S are engageable, and at its lower end is provided with a recess 17 'to receive the 'upper end of the actuator 14m, hereinafter described. The slidable ,l member or controller N has at its lower end end-faces or' bottom-faces 14.-
The actuator14m, the purpose of which is to move the slidable member or controller N upwardly, comprises a plug or nose-piece .18 having a stem 19, which is seated at its lower end in a bracket formed in the grip-stock of the pistol, the plug or nose-piece 18 being movable or slidable upwardlyY and downwardly in the recess 17 ofthe slidable member or controller N, and in a recessed or bored member 17, formed in the grip-stock of the pistol, the plug or nose-piece 18 never being entirely retractable from the recess 17, and by its engagement with said vrecess v17, and with said recessed or bored member 17 Vproviding a means for preventing inward shifting of the lower end of the slidable member or controller N. But I do not restrict myself to this means for preventing such inward shifting, as any suitable means for this purpose may be used.
The disconnector la is `pivotally movable and comprises a base or block 19, which is pivotally attached toV the slidable member or controller N, and a stem 20. The stem 20 vhas an outer or frontl face 21- and an upper end-face 22, and an inner or rear face 23.
The end of the trigger member F is engageable with said front face 21 when the firing member or hammer .H is in firing position, and is engageable with said end-face 22, when the liring member or hammer H is in fired position, and the end 17d of the sear member Sis engageable with said rearv face 23 when the firing member or hammer is in tiring position. The stem 20 thus lies between the trigger member F and the-Sear member S. Y
The trigger member F isv movable forf wardly by means not shown, and. by pull thereon is movable rearwardly. The trigger member F is provided with anrend 6s conssting of an end-face and an adjacent curved face, the end-face being intended to engage the outer face 21 of the stemY of the disconnector lo when the firing member or hammer H 1s in nring position and the sliding memj of said disconnector when the firing member *Y or hammer H is in lired position and the disconnector le has moved downwardly with the downward movement of the slidable member-or controller N. Y
My lire control mechanism is provided with `a grip-safety-portion or device, generally denoted by Gr, which comprises ka gri operable member or grip-,safety member GP. The grip-safety member G is hand compressible or yieldable, and is pivoted to the grip-stock of the pistol by means of a pivotpin g, preferably in the manner described and set forth in my Said patent. 1
The gripsafety member G closesthe slot or space 2S formed in the grip-stock of the pistol and which slot orspace is of usein assembling the details of my invention.
The top portion ofthe grip-safety member G is slotted out to furnish clearance for the liring member or hammer H and the sear y member S, leaving a pair of side walls 7e which are extended to provide a pair of locking-prongs 7b. When the end (i2` of the gripsafety member G is in rearward position, or position of safety, the locking-prongs or lever-arms 7b are immediately below the endfaces or i' bottom-faces 14f of the slidable member or controller N which is thereby locked against downward movement.y The contactor, 2/1, is carried by the grip-safety member and is in engagement with the Searv member S whether the grip-safety member is in position of safety or compressed. The contactor 24, consists of a point or nose-piece 25, which isv moved or pushed outwardlyv engagement with the face 17e of the Sear j member, and thereby hold the lower end 17d of the sear member in contact or engagement' with the inner or rear face 23 of the disconnector la when the ring member or hammer H is in firing position and the grip-safety me-mber G is in position of safety.
5 The tiring spring 8e, or spring for actuating the tiring member or hammer H, is seated in the grip-stock adjacent lto the lower end of the grip-Safety member G', preferably in the manner described in my 0 last above-mentioned co-pending application, the pressure of the spring 8e being upward. A cupped member or cupped plunger 8", which is movable or slides betweena side-face formed in the Grip-stock of the 5 pistol and the grip-safety member Gr', af-
fords an abutment for the spring 8e, the movable member or plunger 8C thus engaging in its movement the grip-safety member G.
A rod 8b is pivotally attached at its upper end to the tiring member o r hammer H, and has a rounded lower end which is seated in the cupped portion of the movable member or plunger 8c.
5 In operation, Figs. 3 and 5, the sliding breech-action of the pistol being in forward position, is locked in this position by engagement therewith of the slidable .member or controller N which is held in upward or locking position by the locking prongs 7b of the grip-safety member Gr, the slidable member having been moved upwardly by the actuator 14m.
The firing member or hammer H having 5 been moved to firing position, is locked in this position by the sear member S, the, lower end'ot which is in contact or engagement with the disconnector lc, being held -in this position by the contacter 24. The trig- 0 ger member F is in'contact with disconnector 7o. preparatory vto rearward pull on the trigger member, and the grip-safety member G is in rearward position, or position of safety. Theslidable member or control- 5 ler N when in upward position thus locks the sliding breech action ofthe pistol and locks the sear member and tiring member .or hammer in tiring position.
Grip-compression of the grip-safety mem- 0 ber G', Figs. 7 and 8, releases the lockingprongs 7b kthereof from engagement with the slidable member or controller N to permit downwardimovement thereof. Iull on the trigger member F moves'the disconnec- 5 .tor le inwardly and thereby moves the sear member S, to release the firing member or hammerI-I for movement to fire-d position by the spring 8c, the arms 17 f of the sear member engaging or bearing down upon the 0 uppei1 surfaces of the shoulder 14p ofthe slidable member or controller N, as the iiring member or hammer H is moved to fired position, to move the slidable member or controller downwardly and out of locking 5 position. Pull on the trigger member F also causes this end of the trigger member to engage or ride up on the upper end of theA disconnector lo while the curved face of the end of the trigger member F engages the adjacent side face of the disconnector k and assists in overcoming the pressure oi' the spring of the actuator 14m to afford downward movement of the slidable member or controller N.
Release of grip-compression ofthe gripsafety member G returns the grip-safety member G to position of safety and the various other parts of my invention to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and above described. Y Y
