G. CHRISTIANSEN.
BUCKLE AND WRIST STRAP.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 3, 1920.
Patented Sept. 13,1921.
GcoRaa CHE/S T/A NSEN, Elma/Mo's v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Gnome: GHRISTIANSEN, or OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
Application filed May 3,
i To all whoa/1 it may concern Be it. known that I, (inonon QuinsTiANsnN, a citizenof the. United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles and VVrist-Straps, of which thefollowing is a specification. My invention relates to buckles and wrist straps of the class especially adapted for use in holding a watch or like article upon the wrist. ItQis the object of my invention to provide a simple and inexpensivebuckle especially adapted for use with a transversely corded ribbonor fabricstrap to form wristattaching means for a watch or the like, for use as abracelet. A further object of myiuvention is to rovide a buckle of this class havin specially formed means for engaging the ri bonor strap without injury thereto, butso as to effectually prevent slipping of the buckle relative to the ribbon, when theparts are in use. A further object of -myinvention is to provide a buckle of this class which may be readily engaged with and disengaged from any intermediate portion of the ribbon or strap, by the use of one hand only, and without liability of dropping the watch with whichthestrap and buckle are use(l. "A further object of my invention'is to provide a bucklejofthis class having means for effectually prevent: ing thesame from assuming a diagonal positionwith reference tothe ribbon, when the device is in use, and to prevent the buckle being disengaged from the ribbon or strap by lateral movement relative thereto, except by a deliberate act of the wearer. This application is in part a continuation of my application for watch bracelet, filed Aug. 31. 1917, Serial No. 189,095.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an end view of a watch bracelet formed with a buckle embodying my invention, and a ribbon arranged in accordance therewith, Fig. 2 is a detail bottom or inner side view of the buckle, with a portion of the ribbon attached thereto, Fig. 3 is a plan or outer side view of thebuckle alone, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the buckle and ribbon. and Fig. 5 is a detail transverse section of the buckle on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is illustrated a watch 6 having at opposite sides thereof loops or bows 7 for connection with a strap or ribbonto attach the same in BUCKLE Ann warscr s'rfaar.
pecificati n of Letters Patent Patented Sept. 13, 1921.
1920., Serial No. 378,550.
the form of a bracelet upon the wrist of the user. 1 preferably employ a fabric strap or ribbon 8 which is cordedbr transversely ribbed, as indicated in Figs. 2 and ii, and oneend of said ribbon is connected in any suitable way with one of the bows 7 of the watch. The body or intermediate portion of the ribbon passes slidably through the second bow 7, and the second end of the ribbon is formed into a loop 9 for connection with the buckle.
Thebuckle is formed from a single plate of metal, and has a flat approximately rectangular body-portion 10. On said body adjoining one end thereof, which for convenience of description will be designated as the rear end, there are rounded laterally projecting lugs 11, and between said lugs there is av transverse slot 12 of which the iearward side is substantially closed by two fingers 13, the latter extending inwardly into-the slot 12 until the second finger can enter the opposite side of the loop, after whiclrthe loop is flattened out so as to lie smoothly in the slot 12, of which the width is substantially the same as that of the ribbon. Obviously, the ribbon can be detached from the buckle by crowding the loop into that end of the slot 12 adjoining the longer finger 13, and then slipping one edge out through the opening between the ends of the fingers.
At the front end of the body 10 there is a transverse slot lat which is open at one end, the front side of the slot being formed by the rear edge of a finger 15 which is joined to the body at the closed end of the slot. The front edge of the finger 15 is rounded transversely as shown in Figs. 2 and and at the rear edge of the finger there is a thin projecting portion or lip 16 which extends partially across the slot 14. Opposite said lip 16, at the front edgeof the body 1.0 there is a second lip 17, which projects downwardly, or inwardly with reference to the position of the buckle when or turned inwardly as shown in Fig. 5.
The flange 18 terminates at the rear edge of the slot 14:, but the flange 19 is longer andextends past the closed end of said slot 14, thus strengthening the connectingportion between the body 10 and the finger 15.
' hen attached to the loop 9 at the end of the ribbon, the buckle prevents said loop being pulled through the how 7 of the watch, and thns maintains the bracelet formation, so, that after being slipped over the hand of the user there is no-possibility oi dropping thewatch while adjusting the bracelet to it upon the wrist. The adjustment of the bracelet is readilyeffected by the use of one hand only, the operation being as follows: The lugs 11 at the sides of the buckle are caught between the thumb and forefinger, the ribbon ispulled through the watch-bow Tunt'il the desired tightness upon the wrist is attained,v and'the end of the finger 15 is then inserted beneath the ribbon, so that .the latter passes into the slot 1% of the buckle. Upon releasing hold of thebuckle, the pull of the ribbon at the rear end thereof drawsthe body down into parallelism withthe engaged portion of the ribbonbody, as shown in Figs, 1 and l. When in this position the lips 16 and 17 enter the transverse grooves or corrugations of the corded ribbon and effectually'prevent slipping of the ribbon through the buckle. At the same time the flanges 18and 19 embrace the sides of the ribbon and prevent the bucklebeing twisted to a diagonal position relative to the ribbon-body.
To release the buckle, it is merely necesv sary to grasp" the same at the lugsll, as
before, ulling the rear end of the buckle outward y until it is approximately perpendicular to the engaged part of the ribribbon.
born and then moving the buckle laterally to withdraw the linger if) from beneath the The lugs ll greatly facilitate the release of the buckle, by readily permitting the same to turn pivotally between the thumb and linger, when pulling the rear end of the buckle outwardly from the ribbon, and thus automatically turning the buckle-body to a position at which the lips 17 and flange 18 do not interfere with the lateral releasing movement.
Now, ha ving described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
l. A buckle comprising a flat body portion having at one end means tor connection with the end of a strap, laterally extendinglugs at said end of the body, there being at the opposite end of the body a linger spaced therefrom to form a transverse slot open at one end, strap-engaging lips at each side of said transverse slot, and longitudinal inturned flanges at the sides of the body for the purpose described.
2. An adjustable wrist'slrap comprising a ribbon adapted to have one end attached to one of a pair of strap bows and have its other end slidable through the other one of such bows to form aloop. a buckle having one end connected with said loop. the oppo site end of the buckle having a transverse slot open at one end whereby to pass trans versely over any intermediate portion oi? the ribbon, there being fixed lips at the edges of said slot cngageable with the ribbon to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the buckle thereon, there being flanges at the sidesoi the buckle adapted to embrace the sides of the ribbon when the same and the buckle-body are in parallelism, and lugs at the sides oi the buckle adjoining the lirstnamed end thereof, for the purpose de scribed.
