Description

A. PFEIFFER.
CLASP- APPLICATION FILED AUG-23, 1920.
1,396,941 Patehted Nov. 15-, 1921.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH PFEIFIER, or cHIcAeo, ILLINOIS.
7'0 allwhom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, ADoLrH PFEIFFER, subject of the present Government of Russia, residing at Chicago, inthecounty of Cook and State ofIllinois, have invented certain new andjuseful Improvements Clasps, of
whi'th the following is a specification.
. nected r r This inventionrelates to improvements in clasps, particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited inits use as-a Suspender claspand one of theobjects of the invention is to provide an improved clasp of this character which will beeffective and eflicient inoperation and. which will securely hold the article tofwhioh it is to be con- A further object is to provide an improved clasp of this character j having meansfor locking or seculing the fastening lever 01' member against accidental movement about its pivot.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful ob- .jects as will appeanthe invention consists n the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination andarrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in a so the accompanying drawing illustrating this the clasp in an open position- Fig. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 ofanother formof theinvention.
Fi 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 ig. 5. I o
Fi .7 is a View" similar to Fig. 5 showlng the c asp in an open position.
Fig. 8 isa side elevation of Fig. 7.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing the clasp consists of a body portion constructed of any suitable sheet material such as metal bent back upon itself to form the i spaced portion 10 and 11 and in order to or being contracted, a suitable fastening device 12 may be provided. The portlon 10 of hold the parts in such position and to revent the members 10 and 11 from sprea mg the body, in the form of the invention shown in Figs. lto 4, is provided with any desired number of elongated apertures or openings about its Specificationcf Letters fatcnt. Patented N 15 1921 Application flledhugust 28, 1920. Serial No.'405,369.
13 therethrough and rojecting beyond the portion 10 are spaced ears 14, which are preferably arranged adjacent one end of the portion 10. a
Pivotally mounted to the earsl l is a lever or element15 which is provided with prongs or teeth 16 adapted to be projected through the openings 13 when the lever 15 ismoved pivot in such a direction as to cause the ever 15 to rest against or stand in close proximity to the portion 10 of the body. Connected with the lever 15 at any desired point preferably adjacent its free end is acatch 17 of anyfdesired construc tion; This catch is adapted, when the lever 15 is moved intothe positionshown in Figs.
1 and 2, to enter an opening 18 in theportion 10 of thebody and to cooperate with one of 'the walls ofthe opening 18 after yieldingly locking the lever 15 against movement about its pivot.
If desired, the free end of the portion 11 of the body may be bent back upon itself as at 19 to form a shoulder with which the ends of the prongs or teeth 16 cooperate.
In use the clasp maybe connected to a suspender, a portion of which is, designated as at20 or to any other suitable-portion of a garment, in any desired. manner such as by means ofa link 21 which passes through the opening 22 formed between the portions 10 and 11 of the body and the fastening device 12. The lever 15 is moved into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and the garment or elementto which the clasp is to be attached is inserted. between the portions 10 and llof the body after which the lever 15 is moved about its pivot into the position shown in Figs. 1. and 2 so that the prongs 16, will either penetrate or be forced against the surface of the inserted element to force the latter against the portion 11 of the body for securely holding the element, the catch 17 entering theop ening 18 and locking the lever 15 against movement. The shoulder 19 formed on the end of the portion 11 cooperates with the prongs 16 to frictionally hold the element against displacement with respect to the clasp. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 to 8 the portion 10 of the body is toothed members 25 secured thereto in any desired manner such as by means of fastening devices 26 or, if desired, these teeth 25 may be welded to the lever 15 or may be formed integral therewith.
The inner face of the portion 11 of the body is provided with a series of corrugations or serrations adapted to cooperate with the corrugated or serrated edges 28 of the teeth 25. 1
This form of theclasp is used in the same manner as the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 and when the lever 15 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 6 the material will be frictionally gripped between the serrated faces 28 of the teeth 25 and the serrations or gOI'rugatiOnS 27 on the portion 11 of the hile the preferred form of the invention has herein been shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of this 1 invention.
What isclaimed as new is A clasp embodying a substantially U shaped body portion, a reinforcing fastening device connected with the members of the U to extend across the space therebe-.
tween, said fastening device being spaced from the bend of the body portion to form a suspension eye or opening, portions of one portion, corrugations extending transversely of the last recited member and with which corrugations the toothed members cooperate, and a catch carried by the said lever and adapted to cooperate with an edge of one of the members of the body portion for yieldingly locking the lever against movement with respect to the said body.
In testimony whereof I have si ned my name to this specification, on this 21st day of August, A. D. 1920.
