' IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHABLE BOOTIAND SHOE TIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,060, dated May 20, 1873; application filed 1 January 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL R. HANLEY, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Boot and Shoe Tip, of which the following is a specification:
The ordinary metallic shoe-tip is applied and fastened when the shoe is made, and is not detachable, and can be applied by no one except the manufacturer. The leather caps lately substituted for these must be secured in the same manner, or else applied to cover the whole toe of the boot or shoe. My object is to so construct a metallic tip that it can be applied not only to shoes or boots in process of manufacture, but to those already completed or in use and it consists in a tip having lips or teeth turned inward from its lower edge, and hook-pins at each end, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l is a view of the bottom of the tip. Fig. 2 represents it as attached to the shoe, showing the hooks at one end.

A is the tip, made of sheet metal, struck up or stamped out to the proper shape to fit the toe of the shoe above the sole, as represented. B represents a series of lips on the lower edge of the tip, which lips or teeth are turned inward, so as to enter between the sole and upper of the shoe. At each of the ends of the tip is another hook-lip, O. D
represents a small wire hook-pin, which is.
driven into the sole of the shoe at each end of the tip, and which projects slightly to receive the hook-lips O, as plainly seen in Fig. 1, where the wire hook-pins are seen in section.
When these small wire hook-pins are driven into the sole the tip is readily attached by hooking on one end, and pressing it tightly to the toe of the shoe, and hooking it at the other end. It is detached by simply pressing with the thumb on the front of the tip, and turning one of the ends outward from the hook-pin with the thumb-nail. The elasticity of the toe of the shoe and of the tip allows it to be thus applied and detached very readily, while it is held securely to the shoe when applied.
It will thus be seen that the tip may be applied to shoes already made and in actual use, and be transferred from one shoe or boot to another, but thatit leaves the end of the sole uncovered as before, and presents a neat appearance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metallic shoe-tip A, provided with the lips or teeth B, and the hook-lips O O on its lower edge, as shown and described.
