TIMOTHY GINGRAS AND LOUIS GINGRAS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,057, dated May 20, 1873; application filed March 22, 1873. I'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, TIMOTHY GINGRAs and LOUIS GINGRAS, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Knife-Gleaner, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l of the accompanying drawing represents a top view of my knife-cleaner, partly in section, without frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section with lid open, applied to the wall in the line cc, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section in line a: w, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate'corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a neat, simple, and practical instrument for families, boarding-houses, and hotels, by the use of which knives and forks may be quickly cleaned without dust, and the instrument may be either bracketed to the wall or placed' on a table.
The invention consists in a novel mode of combining the parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the outerl case, which is connected by screws and suitable brackets to the wall. The inner box B is movable therein and may be taken out to be used on a table. A drawer, a, and button b, contains the polishing-powder, consisting of ground brick, emery, or other material. Above drawer a is a horizontal board d divided into two parts by a projecting piece, e,
,to which are applied, preferably by means of leather hinges, the lids f fitting exactly into the parts of board d. The inner sides of lids f as well as of board d are lined with strong buif-leather pieces g, glued and riveted to them, so as to adhere rigidly thereto. The polishing-powder, with oil, soft-soap, or other moistening material is placed on one side and dry polishing-powder on the other. The knives are placed between the leather surfaces and rst rubbed in the vmoistened powder slightly, then in the dry powder till perfectly clean and polished. Box a is slightly drawn open, so that the escaping powder may drop therein. The lids are not closed .when forks are polished, the rubbing of their prongs being sufficient. Leather loops h are placed on the upper sides of lids f so that they may be readily raised. The cover O of box B is hinged to the rear part of the same, and secured by hook-and-eye, or other arrange, ment, to drawer a, locking thereby securely the box and giving a neat, finished appearance to the whole instrument. Cover O may be readily raised by a leather hook or knob t' and thrown open, resting either against the wall or held in an inclined position by a leather strap, It, connected to the inner side of cover C and piece e when placed on the table. Leather buttons e, riveted near the front part of the bottom of box A, support the same withoutscratohing the table, iniparting also an elastic resistance to the pressure exercised by the cleaning of the knives. The same is the case when the instrument is applied to the wall. The knives are rapidly polished in this manner without dust and inconvenience, the instrument forming a neat addition to the kitchen furniture.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- TheY stationary outer case A, the inner movable box B, the drawer a, the superposed leather-lined and divided board d e, the leather-lined lid f, and the cover C, combined, constructed, and arranged as and for the purpose described.
TIMOTHY GlNGR-AS. LOUIS GINGRAS.
