Be it known that I RICHARD W. Mosns, residing at Coraopolis, in the county of flillegheny and State of Pennsylvania have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roll-Adjusting Mechanism, of which the following is a tull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the acconpany ing drawings, iorrning part of this specification, in whichl igure 1 is an end elevation of a roll housing and rolls having my invention applied thereto;

My invention has relation to roll-adjusting meehanism, and more particularly to mechanism tor adjusting the lower roll of rolling mills..
The ohject of my invention is to provide a simple and efiicient device of this character which is compact in its arrangement and out of the way, and in which the operative parts are protected from injury by the roll housing:
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which I have shown the preterred embodiment thereof and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes can be made in the details of Construction and arrangement oi the parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims. r
Tn these drawings, the numeral 2 designates one housing of a three-high rolling mill, 3 the lower mill roll, 4 the middle roll and 5 the top roll. 6 is a screw-down de vice of any usual or suitable character for the top roll. The bottom roll 3 is mounted in a housing :Eor vertical adjustment in any suitable manner. Its end hearing 7 is supported by a saddle block 8, resting on the upcper end of a vertical adjusting screw 9, which has a threaded portion 10, mounted to turn in a fixed nut 11, seated in the housing 2. The lower end of the screw 9 extends below the housing proper and has sldably seinternal beveled gear teeth 13,'the hub of the pinion being shown as having a step-hearing in a renovable cap 14:, upon the anti iriction rollers 15.
16 is a bevel pinion whose teeth are in mesh with the teeth 13 of the gear 12, and which is rigidly Secured to the lower end portion of a shaft 17 which extends ohliquely upward through the roll housing 2 in which 'it is provided with bearings at 18 and 19. The operation will be readily understand. When it is desred to adjust the lower roll 3, the wrench is actuated to thereby actu ate the gear 12 and screw shaft ll, to raise or lower the roll hearing and roll.
It will, of course, be' understood that in practice a similar device is employed at each end of the mili.
The advantages of my invehtion will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The device is simple. The actuating mechanism is thoroughly protected by reason of "its location within the housing. Furthermore, it is out of the way and does 'not form an obstruction to other Operations about the mili, as is the case with adjusting devices which project at the end of the mili. v It also enables the obtaining of a relatively large gear ratio in a small space. The housing base is utilized as a hearing for the actuating shaft and the device can be applied at a relatively low cost.
I claim:
1. The combination with a roll housing and a Inill roll mounted for Vertical movement therein, of an adjusting shaft for said roll extending upwardly through the base of the housing, an actuating shaft extending obliquely in a lateral and upward direction through the base of the housing, an internal bevel gear on said adjusting shaft and said actuating shaft having a pinion engag ng said internal gear, and means for Operating the actuating shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a roll housing and a mili roll mounted for Vertical move-` nclosing said gearing, substantially as desoribed.
4. In a rolling mill, the combination with a vertically adjustable roll, and an adjustable member carrying said roll, of a shaft journaled in the base of the housing and extending laterally upward through said base, and bevel gearing conneoting the adjusting shaft with said member,substantially as desorbed.
