To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I,JoHN W. SHEPERDSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Danphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling-Mill Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the so.
My invention relates to rolling mill apparatus with special references to the guide equipment thereof and is applicable to metal rolling mills known as two-high and three-high mills, and is particularly adapted for use in connection with those of the continuous type, and is a division from my copending application filed November 13th, 1912, Serial No. 731,077.
Although my invention is adapted for use in connection with blooming mills, billet mills, bar mills and rod mills, I will, for the sake of simplicity of description, refer to the rolled piece in all cases as a bar. I

In order to more fully describe my invention, ll will now refer to the accompanying one sheet of drawings on which like numerals indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a'topplan view of an entering guide adapted to coiiperate with the rolls.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal elevation of the entering guide taken on the line II.II of Fig. 1.
The rolls are indicated as 1 and 2, while 3 represents the entering guides which are supported at one end on the guide rest mountedon the housin s as shown, while the other end 4 of sai entrance guide is supported on the pedestal 5,-which latter is provided with a suitable base secured to a solid foundation (not shown). The entering guide is provided with side guides 6 formed integral. therewith and preferably tapering from their inner ends, to their outer ends as shown, thereby providing guiding passages to the roll passes. The outer part 4 of the base of the entering guide is sloping as shown, thereby forming an inclined surface to better receive and direct a bar to the roll pass in connection with the tapering side ides 6, 7, 8 andthe sloping cover 9, thus orming an adjustable funnel-shaped construction adapted to guide bars of different sizes and forms. The entering guide late is secured in position by the bolts 10 w ich pass through slotted holes 11 provided therein and is locked in position -by the keys 12 which pass through slots in the ends of the bolts 10 as shown; Only one of each pair ofbolts 10 may be used and its head may be seated in either of the slots in the pedestal 5, or in either of the slotted holes 11 in each of the entering side guides 6, thereby providing different positions'of the entering-guide, as desired. Further smalleradjustments of the same can be made by reason of the slotted holes 11 provided for thispurpose. This arrangement permits lateral and longitudinal adjustment of the enterin guides to adapt them to cooperate with t e rolls as desired. The inner endsof the entering side guides 6 are pro vided with intermediate swinging side. guides '7 and the outer swinging side guides 8. These swinging guides adjoin the rolls and are adapted to be moved laterally and secured in position to accommodate and ide bars of difl'erent widths. These ad- )llStfiblB side guides 7 and 8 are hinged and pivoted to "the fixed side guides 6 by the pivot pins 13 as shown, which pass through the hinge lugs 14, 15 and 16 formed thereon, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner end of the entrance guide is supported on aguide rest by means of its pro ecting Short barsor blocks 18 rest on top of the tapered ribs or flanges of each ofthe covers 9 and hold them and the swinging guides firmly in place by the action of the keys or wedges 19 which are driven between the bars 18 and the longer bar 20, which latter is secured at each end to the roll housing, thereby serving as an abutment against which the wedges 19 operate.
Although I have shown and described any improvements in considerable detail, I do not wish to be limited to the exact and specific details shown and described, but may use such substitutions, modifications or equivalents thereof, as are embraced within the scope of my invention, as pointed out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z-- d, An entering guide for rolling mills comprising a base the outer end or which is inclined and provided witha plurality of tapered side guides upwardly projecting therefrom, swinging side guides pivoted to the inner ends of the side guides aforesaid, and means for adjustably securing the same in position.

outer portion of said base being inclined downwardly in a direction away from the rolls, a plurality of tapered I side guides formed integral with, and projectin upwardly from, the outer ortion of sai base, the thicker ends'of sai side guides being nearer the rolls, a plurality of swinging side guides pivoted to the thicker inner ends of the tapered side guides aforesaid, the inner ortions of the up er edges of said swingmg guides being ownwardly inclined toward the rolls covers mounted on said in= clined upper edges and means for adjustably securing same in position, the whole forming a plurality of adjustable openings tapering in both directions toward the roll asses.
