The breech block is formed withv a bearing 6 which opens through itsrear faceand with a slot 7 'opening through its top Vand into the cylindrical bearing, the bearing usually extending lengthwise ofthe gun land being nearly horizontal, and the slot extending lengthwise' of said bearing and receivinga rearwardly extending lug 8 on the barrel.

' When the spring-pressed latch is in its locked position, its upper end is in the path of the 4barrel lug 8 and as the barrel moves to its closed position, this lug engages the upper end of the latch and depresses 'the latch to-remove its locking shoulder 33 out of engagement with the notch 34, thus permitting the spring of the thumb lever 18'to return the thumb lever 18 to its closed position and thereby move the bolt 9 to its locked position.
