HAT-CROWN GREASE-RETAIN IN G DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Application filed July 17, 1920. Serial No. 396,900.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. SOHALOW, a citizen of the United States, and residing at East New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Crown-Crease-Retaining Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to devices for retaining a crease in the crown of felt or other soft hats, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, eflicientlin use and comparatively inexpensive; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a hat with part of the construction broken away and showing the use of my improved crease retain ing device;
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of F ig 1;
Fig. 3 a side view of the crease retalning device;
Fig. 4 an end view thereof; and,
' Fig. 5 a backview thereof.
In the drawing forming part. of this specification I have shown what is known as a soft hat 5 provided with a crown 6, the central top portion of which is folded inwardly as shown at 7 to form the desired crease therein, and at 8 I have shown my improved crease retaining device in use.
The crease retaining device is formed from sheet metal, celluloid, rubber or other more or less elastic material and is oblong and approximately rectangular in form, and comprises a hollow cylindrical back portion 9 in the back part of which is a thumb and finger recess 10, and the front part thereof is open longitudinally as shown at 11 to form a narrow slot, the opposite side walls of which are provided with projecting side flanges or plates 12 which, in the form of construction, shown are normally slightly divergent.
My improved hat crown crease retaining device is not limited to any specific material in the construction thereof, nor to any exact dimensions thereof, all that is necessary in this connection being that the device be made of spring material and that the side portions of the device be so formed as to securely grasp and hold the folded part of the crown of the hat, and this operation is made more sure and positive by the fact that the side flanges or plates 12 normally converge inwardly toward the slot in the cylindrical back part 9 of the device with the side walls of which slot the said wings or plates are connected. lVith this construct-ionthe spring force of the cylindrical back part 9 ,of the device is added to that of the side plates or flanges 12 of the device which press on the opposite sides of the fold of .I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat crown crease retaining device composed of spring sheet metal and comprising a cylindrical portion in one side of which is a narrow longitudinal slot, the side I walls of which are provided with projecting flanges or plates, the cylindrical portion being also provided opposite the slot therein with a longitudinal thumb and finger recess.
2. A hat crown crease retaining device composed of a sheet of spring material and comprising a cylindrical back part provided in the front side thereof with a narrow longitudinai slot, the side walls of which are provided with projecting and slight divergent side flanges or plates, the cylindrical back part being also provided in the side thereof opposite the slot therein With a large thumb and finger recess.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in 10 presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 14th day of July, 1920.
FRANK J. SCHALOW. \Vitnesses C. E. MULREANY, H. E. THOMPSON.
