Wzi amzg UNITED STATES WILLIAM B. SHAVE], OF EATON, COLORADO.
COMBINATION-WRENCH.
Application filed January 30, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SHAW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Eaton, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination l Vrenches, of which the following is a speciiication.
The object of the invention is to provlde a simple and efficient wrench adapted for interchangeable use either as a nut or bolt wrench and as a pipe wrench, wherein improved means of adjustment are provided to facilitate the adaptation of the same to objects of varying dimensions, and to this end the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 8 is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The wrench consists essentially of a shank 10 carrying the fixed outer jaw 11 and serving as a guide for the inner movable jaw 12, it being understood that any preferred construction of jaw faces may be employed, and a handle or grip member 13 pivotally connected as at 14 to the shank, and motioncommunicatingconnections between the handle or grip portion and the inner or movable jaw. In the construction illustrated these motioncommunicating means embody a spur wheel 15 loosely mounted concentric with the pivotal point 14 serving as the connection between the handle or grip portion and the shank, a link 16 connecting said spur wheel with the inner or movable jaw 12, and a double dog 17 pivotally mounted at 18 upon the handle or grip portion and yieldingly held in adjusted positions by a coiled expansion spring 19.
In the construction illustrated the expansion spring is terminally seated upon studs 20 and 21 which are carried respectively by the dog 17 and the inner end of the handle, the latter preferably being bifurcated as shown 'clearly in Fig. 2 to form parallel side members 23 bounding an intermediate space 24: which serves as a housing for the spring, and the spring is of such a length that when terminally engaged with the said studs, it assumes a bowed position indicated in Fig.

1, and by manually deflecting the bow from one side to the other the position of the dog may be reversed to cause either of its extremities to engage with the peripheral teeth of the spur wheel 15. This arrangement provides for communicating motion to the spur wheel, tending to move the jaw 12 toward the fixed j aw 11 in a variety of positions of the handle with reference to the line of the shank, and by reason of the possibility of relative movement of the spur wheel or of the handle or both with relation to the shank, the movable jaw is adapted to release or loosen its grip upon an interposed object on the-backward stroke in employing the tool as a pipe wrench. It will be understood moreover that the reversal of the position of the dog may be effected without removing the hand from the grip portion of the handle and that the relatively eccentric connection of the handle and the link 16 with the spur wheel provides for applying a gripping action to the movable jaw which insures an etli'cient engagement.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. A wrench having a shank carrying a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted on the shank for movement toward and from the fixed jaw, a rotatably mounted spur wheel carried by the shank and operatively con nected with the movable jaw, the shank being provided with a handle, a reversible dog pivotallv mounted on the handle for terminal engagement with the teeth of the spur wheel, and a longitudinally bowed expansion spring terminally engaged respectively with the handle and the dog for holding the latter in its adjusted positions.
2. A wrench having a shank carrying a jaw mounted to slide upon the shank, a handle pivotally c0nnected with the shank, a spur wheel mounted concentric with the, pivotal connection of the shank and handle, a link connecting the spur wheel with the movable jaw, a reversible dog pivotally mounted upon the handle for terminal engagement with the teeth of the spur wheel, and an expansion longitudinally bowed spring for yieldingly holding the dog in its adjusted positions.
3. A wrench having a shank carrying a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted to slide upon the shank, a handle pivotally connect-- ed with the shank, a spur wheel mounted concentric with the pivotal connection of handle and adapted for defieetien in opposite directions to reverse the terminal enga ement of the dog with the spur wheel. 10 n testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
