To all whomzt may concern:

Be it known that we, ELI K. GARRETsoN and WooDARD FULGHUM, both of the town of Winchester, in the county of Randolph, in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Bottoms forBedsteads, Lounges, and Seats; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which like letters ot reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l represents a sectional elevation; Fig. 2, a plan.

This invention consists of a combination of the usual bedsteads1ats with a short vibrating lever at each end of said sla-ts, and on which the latter rest. The lever at each end of said slat or slats rests upon a spring or rubber support, which rests in turn upon a crossbar supported by the bedstead-frame. The further end of each lever enters a staple or other socket on the bed-head or on the foot of the bedstead. rIhis arrangement allows the slats considerable vertical play, and by adjustin g the support nearer to or further from the vibrating ends of the levers more or less vertical play is conferred upon them and the supported slats.

One of the forms in which We construct this bed or lounge bottom we will now describe: In the drawing, A A are the sides ofthe bedstead; B B, the head and foot boards, C C, transverse supports for the levers E E E, which rest at either end on the sides A A, one near the head-board the other near the foot board, along which they are movable. `D D D are several slats extending` longitudinally of the bedstead, each slat having slots c a at either end to admit from beneath the free end of a short horizontally-placed lever, E, which has a cross pin or head, d, on that end, and

The remoter end of each lever is ngaged within a staple, e, or similar device `o retain that end steadily, but allowing a cer in amount of vertical vibration to that end ngaged with the slat. It will be seen that the slat `D D D, rest-r ing as they do upon the vibrati s ends of their respective levers E E E, are fr e to move up and down with considerable s ringiness, or vertical play for their entire len th, according to the amount of pressure there n, and entirely independent of each other i such action.
