2 SHEETSSI'IEET UNITED STATES ROBERT EDWIN MASON, (NOW BY JUDECIAL CHANGE 01] NAME, MAYOR MASON) OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SHOULDER AND BODY BRACE.
Application filed June 9,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonn-n1 EDWIN Mason, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Detroit, in the county of l Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Shoulder and Body Brace, of which the foil wing is a specification.
l ly invention is a combined shoulder and body brace and its principal object resides in the provision of an appliance which will retain the body in an upright position with the shoulders back and the abdomen in, thereby obviating crowding of the respiratory organs.
Further, the invention .provides an appliance of this character which will hold the body erect, and at the same time permit the person wearin the appliance to have every normal free oody movement.
The invention also provides a combined shoulder and body brace which will retain the body in an erect natural position and which is so constructed as to permit the same to be worn next to the body without rubbing or irritating the same.
It is also within the provisions of the present invention to provide an appliance of this character which may be quickly and readily applied to a person and will not necessarily require assistants in placing the appliance in position.
WVith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind as may become apparent from the following disclosure, the invention consists in the constructions, formations and operations to be hereinafter set forth, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation, showing the appliance in operative position on a person, the clotted-line position indicating that the person may bend the body to any position without interference of the appliance;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the appliance; and
Fig. at is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4 of Fig. 3.
The invention, as reduced to practice, consists of a relatively long band or length of fabric, designated at 5 provided with buckles or other fastenings 6 at its terminals.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
1920. SeriaI No. 387,776.
Attaching straps 7 are secured to the band 5 intermediate its ends and in horizontal alinement, as indicated at 8, and are adapted for cooperation with the buckles or fastenings 6. Where the band 5 engages the shoulders and the limbs, it is provided with pads 9. These pads are formed from medicated cotton or gauze and are incased in the band, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
In placing the appliance on a person, one end of the band 5 is passed beneath the thigh forwardly of the body and the corresponding strap 7 is drawn through the buckle 6, and the band 5 passed diagonally across the hip upwardly and diagonally across the back. From this point the band is passed over the opposite shoulder, beneath the corresponding arm, then horizontally across the back from where it is passed under the opposite arm and extended upwardly over the opposite shoulder and extended diagonally across the back in crossed relation beneath the horizontally disposed part. The band is then extended forwardly across the hip and passed under the thigh and then attached to the other strap 7.
It will be stated that when the appliance has been properly adjusted on the body, the horizontally disposed part will force the shoulder blades forwardly consequently retaining the shoulders erect and the other parts of the body in their natural position.
Further, it will be evident that the appliance will permit the wearer to bend to any natural position without any discomfort whatsoever.
From the disclosure, it will be obvious that I have provided a simple and inexpensive body and shoulder brace which will at all times hold the body in natural erect position, and that the appliance may be readily laundried when desired.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United across the back and downwardly and for- States is: i wardly across the thigh and passed rear- A combined shoulder and body brace inwardly under the crotch, and tabs carried 10 eluding a band, the intermediate part of by the end portions at points rearwardly of 5 which being adapted to embrace the baek the thigh engaging parts for detachable and shoulders of the human body, the end connection to the extremities of the band. portions being extended in crossed relation ROBERT EDWIN MASON.
