PATENT orrlce.
PAUL WILLIAM PICK, OFPORTLAND, OREGON.
ANTIRATTLER FOR WINDOXV-SASHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led June 7, 1920. Serial No. 387,057.
To all 107mm 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PAUL VILLIAM Pion a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland. in the county of Multnomah and State of Qregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Afintirattlers for lVin'dow-Sashes, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to devices which are used between a window sash and jamb, or, between a pair of window sashes at the meeting rails, for the purpose of tightening the sash or sashes and thereby preventing rattling when the wind is blowing.
My object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable and portable anti-rattler for window sashes which embodies improvements adapting it for quiclr and easy application to the sash at any point where it is advisable to wedge the latter and prevent rattling.
My anti-rattler embodies a sheet metal sheath, preferably of steel, having relatively expansible sides arranged so as to be adapted for easy insertion between the sash and the jamb, or, between the meeting rails of two sashes, and a movable wedging device or member, preferably pivoted to the sheath, which can be used with a lever-lille action to expand the sides of the sheath for the purpose of locking the sash.
Fly invention possesses the very decided advantages of being light and portable and, also, adaptable for easy application, while preventing any damage to the sash or to the `iamb or sash bead. rEhe wedging device or member being used as an expander for the sides of the sheath and working between them, instead of being forced directly between the sashes or a sash and the jamb, does not mar the sash or jamb. rEhe invention being capable of embodiment in very compact form, is particularly adapted for use by travelers and others who have occasion to occupy rooms in hotels and other buildings where, from age or poor construction, the sashes are loose and inclined to rattle.
The invention being susceptible of modification without departing from the essential principle thereof, the disclosure is to be considered as illustrative, instead of restrictive, of the scope thereof.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l, is an elevation of a two window sashes and their jamb, illustrating the application of the anti-rattler;
Fig. 2, is a detail side view of the antirattler by itself, the wedging device being swung outwardly in relation to the sheath;
Fig. 3, is a detail plan View of the invention, when the wedging device is inside the sheath; and
Fig. 4, is an edge view, the parts being in the condition shown in Fig. 3.
Portions of two window sashes are shown at l and 2, and a portion of their jamb at 3.
My invention comprises a sheath 4 and a wedging device or member 5 adapted for use in expanding the sides or walls of the sheath when swung in between said sides or walls. 1
Preferably, the wedging device or member 5 is in the form of a wedging lever having a handle 6 and pivoted at its other end to the sides of the sheath 4 at 7.
Preferably, the sheath 4 is in the form of a piecel of doubled sheet steel whose free edges come together, or reasonably close to each other along the lines 8, 9. The inherent resiliency of the stock of the sheath maintains the sides thereof normally in that condition so that the sheath may be easily inserted between the sash and the jamb, as shown in Fig. l, or, between the meeting rails of the sashes.
rlhe device 5 is preferably made of hard metal and is of wedge shape in cross-section,
and has the sharp edge 10, whereby it isl readily sheath 4.
To prevent a sash from rattling, the sheath 4 is slipped in between the sash and its jamb, or, between the meeting rails of the two sashes. The wedging device 5 is then swung in between the sides of the sheath, by operating the handle 6 to bring the same to the position shown in Figs. l, 3, 4, or as near thereto as circumstances may require. The wedging device works against the inner faces of the sheath and expands them without marring the sash or jamb. To remove the device, the handle 6 is swung outwardly as shown in Fig. 2.
l/Vhat I claim is:
l. An anti-rattler for window sashes, comforced between the sides of the Patented Aw. 2, 1921.
portion of prising a sheath formed from a doubled peoe of sheet metal having relatively eX- pansible sides, and a movable Wedging device carried by the sheath and mounted so that it is adapted to be inserted between the sides of the sheath.
2. An anti-ratt1er for Window sashes, comprising a sheath formed from a doubled piece of sheet metal having relatively expansible sides, and a Wedging device pivoted to said sheath and adapted to be in- `serted between the sides thereof to expand them, said Wedging device having a handle.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature.
V"PAUL WILLIAM PICK.
