HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrH Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same. i This invention relates to hinges and the object of the invention is to provide an improved hinge butt construction composed of two or more detachably connected parts fashioned from sheet metal and which are so constructed as to hold the separate parts of said hinge butt, when assembled, rigidly in position or against rattling when subjected to vibrations, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a hinge butt of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, e'lficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, 111 which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which my improved hinge butt;

In Figs. 1 to 3inclusive, I have indicated at 10 in dotted lines a part of a door frame and at 11 a part of-a door or other swinging member. Mounted in connection withthe door 11 is a hinge butt 12 which, in the form of construction shown, comprises an attaching plate 13 and a hook-shaped arm 14:, the free end of which is tubular in form. as shown at 15 in Fig. 2.

Tliehinge butt 12 forms no part of this invention and is merely shown to illustrate a complete hinge, and in Figs. 1 to 6' inclusive, I have shown at 16 one form of my nnproved hinge butt which, in the construction shown, ls mounted inconnection with the door frame 10. The hinge butt 16 comprises an attaching plate 17 and a substant ally U-shaped supporting member 18. i
The attaching plate 17 is shown in detail in igs. i to 6 inclusive, andrsaid plate is fashioned from a strip of metal, the central portion of which is depressed to form' an elongated recess 19 in the outer face thereof,
the depth of said recess being approximately two-thirds ,ofthat of the thickness of said plate as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and the backwardly pressed portion 20 which is of the samethickness as that of the plate 17 is of slightly less dimensions than the dimensions of the recess 19, this result being produced by suitable dies and the rear corner portion of the plate between the backwardly pressed portion 20 and the plate 17 proper is rounded to a slight extent as shown-at 21 to give strength to the connection between these parts. The backwardly pressed portion 20 is cut out to form an approximately rectangular aperture 22, and the plate 17 is provided at one side portion thereof with a cut-out or apertured portion 23 whichopens into the aperture 22 but is of less vertical dimensions than the aperture 20 as is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The free corner portions of the plate 17 are also provided with countersunk screw-apertures 24 through which screws or other attaching devices 25 may be passed for mounting said plate in connection with a suitable support. r
After the aperture 22 has been formed in the backwardly pressed portion 20 of the plate 17 the remaining parts thereofform attaching means for the supporting members 18 of the hinge butt and are provided with threaded apertures 26 approximately cenadapted to pass and into the threaded apertures 26 of the plate 17, or the backwardly pressed portion 20 thereof in securing the member 18 in connection with the plate 17 It will be noted that the end portions 29 of the member 18 are adapted to fit snugly within the end portions of the recess 19in the plate 17 and the outside vertical dimensions of the member 18 willbe such as to snugly fit in the aperture 22 of the back wardly pressedportion 20 so that whenthe member 18 is secured to the plate 17 by the screws 31, the movement of said parts one upon another will'be obviated when subjected to vibrations, and this will also relieve thestrain upon the screws 31 and pre vent the loosening thereof. 7 The top and bottom walls of the backwardly directed U shaped portion 27 of themember 18 are provided with countersunlrapertures 32,0ne of which is shown in full lines in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and in securing the hinge butts 12 and 16 together a pin 33 is passed through the'tubular portion 15 of the hook-shaped arm 14:, and one or both ends thereof, riveted into the countersunk recesses 32 thus connecting the supporting member 18 with the hinge butt 12. It will be noted'that with this construction the dooror swinging member may be detachedfrom the door frame, or the plate 17 secured thereto by: simply removing the screws 31. v
- The construction shown in Figs. 7 to 9 inelusive is the same in all respects as that of the construction inFigs. 1 to Ginclusive, except that thebackwardly pressed portions 20 of the plate 17 are provided with notches or recesses 34 which are indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 and shown in full llnes in Figs. '7 and 8, and the member 18 in this form of construction, or tl e top and bottom walls. of thebackwardlyf directed U- shaped portion. 27 are provided, adjacent to the end portions 29, with'spring members 35 which are stamped fromsaid top and bottom plates asisclearly shown in Figs. 7 and 9 of the-drawing.
The transverse dimensions of the spring members 35 are suchas to permit of the passage of said spring members into the notches or recesses 34 and to fit snugly therein; It wlll also be apparent that in connecting the member 18 with-the plate 17, as hereinbefore set out, the backward or inward movement of the member 18 by the screws 31 depressthe spring members 34 thus placing said parts under tension which will in itself prevent the rattling or movement of the parts 17 and 18 one upon another.
It willbe apparent that while themembers 35 are described as spring members, these members may merely be projections formed in the top; and bottom walls of the hook-shaped'portion'27 of' the member 18,
the dimensions and form of said members being such as to snugly fit in the notches or recesses 34, but I prefer that these members should have a slightspring action. It will also be understood that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect that I am not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad. vantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a hinge butt of the class described 1 an attaching plate fashioned from sheet metal and'provided with an elongated recess in one face thereof formed by pressing the material of said plate inwardly, the depth of said recess being less than the thickness of the material of said plate and the inwardly pressed portion being provided with an aperture. 7 I I 2. A hinge butt of the class described comprising an attaching plate anda supporting member detachably mounted in con nection with said plate, said attaching plate being provided in one face thereof with an elongated recess formed by pressing the material of said plate inwardly, the inwardly pressed portion being provided with an aperture, and said supporting member being adapted to fit in therecess of'said attaching plate and being provided with, a part which extends through the aperture in the inwardly pressed portion of'said plate.

porting member detachably mounted in connection with said plate, said attaching plate being provided in one face thereof with an elongated recess formed by pressing the material of said plate inwardly, the inwardly pressed portion being provided with an aperture, and said supporting member being adapted to fit in the recess of said attaching plate and being provided with a part which extends through the aperture in the inwardly pressed portion of said plate, and that part of the supporting member which passes through the aperture in said plate being provided with laterally projecting members adapted to operate in connection with notches or recesses in the inwardly pressed portion of said plate for holding said parts against movement one upon another.
