HINGE.
' APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 11, 1919.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD D. BUMP, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BETTCI-IER STAMPING AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD D. BUMP, a citizen of the United States. residing at Cleveland. in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hinges and more particularly to concealed hinges such as are used on automobile and other vehicle bodies and has for its objects the provision of a hinge made from sheet metal and cut and bent to the desired shape; which shall provide means, formed integral therewith for limiting the degree of opening of the door; which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture; while further objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing where I have shown certain illustrative embodiments of my said invention but without intent to limit myself thereto, Figure 1 is perspective view of the hinge partly disassembled and with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hinge members; Fig. 3 is a section through the door and the frame to which it is hinged, showing the hinge in place and in the closed position and Fig. I is a perspective view of the hinge members.
In Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawing I have shown at 1 that part of the door frame to which the door is hinged and at 2 a part of the door. In practice of my invention, I provide a hinge comprising three parts 3, A and 5, the first of which is adapted to be secured to or in the door frame, and the second to the door, while the part 5 is hingedly connected to the member -it and detachably connected to the member 3 as b suitable bolts (not shown) passed throng the holes 6 of the member 5 and threaded into holes 7, so that when it is desired to remove the door it is only necessary to remove said bolts and disengage the door from the frame.
The yoke 3 is made of sheet metal, bent as shown in Fig. 1 and is provided with an offset portion 8 adjacent each end to permit a flush joint with the hinge member 5 when fastened thereto.
The hinge member 4 is also made of sheet metal and bent to form the butt plate 9, the curved arm 10 and the inwardly directed member 11 provided with a knuckle 12 which is bent about a pivot pin 13. The edges of the arm 10 are bent over at sub stantially right angles to form the strengthening ribs 10 which are spot welded to the butt plate 9 thereby maintaining the butt plate and curved arm in fixed relation. A stoplug 14- is formed on the curved arm 10 adjacent the member 11 by punching a portion of the metal outwardly as shown.
The co-acting hinge memberois bent from sheet metal and is substantially U-shaped in cross section, the side 15 being provided with an oblong opening 16 punched therein to receive and cooperate with the stop lug 14 to limit the degree of opening of the door and the face 1'? is formed with a similar but larger opening 18 to allow the curved arm 10 to pass therethrough. The other side 19 is substantially parallel with the side 15 and is provided with two knuckles 20-20 which are bent about the pivot pin 13 and cooperate with the knuckle 12 and pivot pin 13 to form the hinge portion.
In use the door frame is mortisedand the yoke 3 fastened therein by suitable screws so as to set flush with the frame as shown in Fig. 3. The door is also slightly mortised to receive the butt plate 9 flush therewith and the hinge members are then fitted into the yoke 3 and fastened thereto as previously described.
Having thus. described my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the particular construction herein described except as set forth in the ap-, pended claims.
Having thus described by invention, what I claim is 1. A hinge device comprising a yoke portion and a pair of binge members, said yoke portion being open at the face and sides thereof, one of said hinge members adapted to be secured to said yoke portion and close the face and a side thereof and the other of said hinge members adapted to close the other side when the hinge is in the closed position.
2. A hinge device comprising a yoke and a pair of hinge members, one of said hinge member being provided with an opening in the face and one side thereof, the other of said hinge members being provided with a curved arm movable through said face opening and carrying a lug engageable with said side opening to limit said movement.
3. A hinge device comprising a yoke and a pair of hinge members, one of said hinge members being substantially U-shaped in cross section and provided on one side with an opening and on the other side with a knuckle engageable with. a pivot pin, the other of said hinge members being provided with complementary knuckles engageable with said pivot pin, a curved arm and a butt plate for fastening to a door.
4. A hinge device (omprising a yoke and a pair of hinge members one of said members being provided With an opening and the other with a lug engageable with said opening to limit the movement between said hinge members.
In a hinge, in combination, a yoke and an attaching portion having parallel flanges at its margins and an opening between said flanges, a second member having an attaching portion and a curved portion projecting therefrom and traversing said openin said curved portion terminating in a right angled arm and means pivoting said arm to one of said flanges upon an axis parallel to said flanges.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
