UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
STEPHEN BARRY AND FRANK PERKINS, OF BRUNSWICK, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,468, dated May 6, 1873 application led January 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN BARRY and FRANK PERKINS, both of Brunswick, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of wrenches in which the handle is used for adjusting the jaws onto the nut; and consists of a straight shank, upon which slides a movable jaw, said jaw and shank being each attached to the curved head of a handle by pinjoints, the oscillating of handle at its joint with the shank moving the loose jaw back and forth on the shank.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our wrench.'
A is a straight shank having a cross-head, B, which forms a permanent jaw of the wrench. C is a movable jaw sliding on the shank A, and has two prongs, c c, forming a double jaw, one prong being cut or set back from theother, whereby the wrench may be adapted for adjustment to a variety of sizes of nuts. From A one side of the jaw C projects an arm, D. E
is a handle having a curved head, F, the shorter end of which is joined to the shank A by a short connection, g, pivoted in slots in end of the shank and the head F. The other end of the head F is joined to the arm D of the movable jaw C. The operation ofthe above-described wrench is very simple: The adjustment of the jaws upon the nut being made by bearing to the left on the handle, the movable jaw is made to bear against the nut, and the harder the nut turns the tighter the gripe, and there is no danger of the wrench slipping.
Having described our invention, what we desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described wrench,| consisting of the shank A, head B, movable jaw C with' arm D, handle E with curved head F, and the conneetion g, all combined and arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
STEPHEN BARRY. FRANK PERKINS.
