ELBERTA JOHNSON, OF MOLEAN COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUXILIARY TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 38,406, dated April 29, 1873; application filed February 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. ELBERTA J OHN- SON, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Dining- Tables; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists of a small table connected with a dining or other table in such a manner that it can be readily thrown under the large table when not needed for use, and run out at the side of the large table when needed for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the ar to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical section of a large table with a side view of my attachment thereto,
and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
A represents a dining-table or any table used for families to sit by at their meals. B represents the attachment or small table, which may be made round, octagonal, or any other suitable shape, and is supported by one leg, C, under its center, and said leg provided with a caster, a,-on which it is swung under the table A when not in use. This small table B is so adjusted that when in use it stands at the right or left side of the mistress presiding at the table, and extends far enough, and is so much lower than the table A, to which it is attached, that it will not materially interfere with the elbow of the mistress. It is used to place coffee-pots, teapots, extra plates, or other things which are to be or have been used at the meal.
The small table B is attached in the following manner: From the frame of the table A, at any convenient place, is attached a vertical spindle, b, upon which is placed a crank or arm, D, and to the outer end of this arm the table B is attached. This crank or arm must be made with a sliding joint, as shown at d, so as to extend the small table more or less from the large one, and so that it may readily be rununder the large table. h h are hooks to hold. the small table in position-one when it is in use, and the other when it is not in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a dining or other table, A, of the supplementary table B O, pivoted arm D, vertical spindle b, sliding joint d, and one or more hooks, h, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of February, 1873.
