Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June '7, 1921.
Application filed September 15, 1920. Serial No. 410,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES T. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MucilageStands, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention pertains to the character of mucilage stands or pots intended to rest upon a desk and be used as occasion may require. lizlucilage stands ordinarily comprise a glass receptacle, a cover therefor and a brush. The inucilage stand of my invention relates mainly to a cover I apply to the body of the glass receptacle, this cover having an open center and upturned flange around the same and adapted to receive the usual mucilage brush having a wooden handle and carrying a cover adapted to close the central opening in the main cover I apply to the receptacle. The cover of my invention will preferably be formed of sheet metal and have at its outer peripheral edges a depending flange or skirt to engage the exterior portions of the receptacle, while at the open center thereof the metal is flanged upwardly and then turned over and flanged downwardly thereby stiffening the cover and providing means for centering the mucilage brush parts thereon. The double flange formed around the opening in the cover of my invention has its members at the lower side of the cover suitably separated from each other to form an annular groove, and the inner member preferably extends downwardly below the adjacent portions of the cover and is integrally formed with a cross-bar extending across the opening in the cover at one side of the center thereof, said bar serving to lend its strength to the cover and to serve as means against which the user may draw the brush for removing surplus mucilag'e therefrom, this surplus mucilage finally dropping back into the receptacle. My construction of cover is such that I guard against the surplus mucilage removed from the brush from finding its way along the lower side of the cover and finally cementing the cover to the receptacle, this being a disadvantage in other mucilage stands which my invention remedies. The mucilage stand of my invention therefore comprises a receptacle to hold the mucilage, a main cover mounted thereon and having a central opening, a vertical flange extending around the same and a bar crossing said'opening and a'mucilage brush of ordinary construction having a handle andthe usual wooden cover to fit over the opening in the cover of my invention.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a mucilage stand constructed in ac cordance with and embodying my invention, the section being on the dotted line 11 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a like section, taken on the dotted line 22, of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the mucilage stand, and Fig. 4c is a top View of the cover of my invention separated from the receptacle.
In the drawings, 10 designates a glass receptacle of usual character for holding mucilage, 11 the cover of my invention applied thereon and 12 the mucilage brush as a whole, said brush comprising a stem 13, bristles 14, handle 15 and cover or lid 16 all of customary construction, the lid 16 having a depending flange and adapted to close the central opening 17 in the cover 11.
The receptacle 10 and brush 12 being'of ordinary commercial construction, do not require any special description.
The cover 11 will preferably be formed of sheet metal and has at its outer peripheral edges a depending flange or skirt portion 18 adapted to to be engaged with the outer upper portions of the receptacle 10, while at its center said cover 11 is formed with the opening 17 and with a double-flange composed of an outer vertical member 19 and an inner vertical member 20,-the middle of the cover 11 being bent upwardly to form the flange or member 19 and then turned over and bent downwardly toform the inner member 20, whose lower edge is carried below the lower edge of the member 19 and below the adjacent portions of the top of the cover 11. The members 19, 20 are separated from each other, as shown in Fig. 1,
so as to form an anuular groove between them, said groove opening downwardly and said members presenting a rounded upper edge to the double flange. The flange member 20 is formed integrally with a cross-bar 21 which extends across the opening 17 in the cover and at one side of the center of said opening. The double flange represented by the members 19, 2O serve as means for centering the brush-lid 16 over the cover 11, as shown in Fig. 1, and the members of said flange form a groove between them, while the member 20 supports the cross-bar 21. The cover 11 aS a whole may be formed in one piece of sheet metal, which may be of reasonable thinness because strengthened by the depending skirt portion 18 and a double flange formed of the members 19, 20.
The member 20 is as hereinbefore mentioned extended below the member 19 and below the adjacent portions of the top of the cover 11, and this feature I regard as important, because it prevents mucilage scraped from the brush by the cross-bar 21 from passing along the lower side of the cover 11 to a point where it could seal the cover upon the receptacle, and the inner member 20 is aided in carrying out this function by the presence of the open groove formed between the members 19, 20, this groove serving to space the member 20 from the adjoining portions of the lower surface of the cover and to prevent the movement of mucilage from the member 20 to the body of the cover. The cross-bar 21 is located as nearto the center of the opening 17 as may be convenient and it permits the brush 12 to stand vertically with respect to the center of the receptacle 10 and also serves to remove surplus mucilage from the bristles of the brush when said bristles are moved against the same on the withdrawal of the brush from the receptacle. The cross-bar 21 not only serves as means by which the surplus mucilage may be scraped off from the bristles of the brush, but being over a middle portion of the receptacle 10 will cause such surplus mucilage to fall back within the middle portion of the receptacle.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A mucilage stand comprising a receptacle, a cover therefor having a central opening and a brush having a handle and a lid for said opening, said cover having a pcripheral edge portion to engage the receptacle and at said opening having a doublefiange comprising an upwardly extending outer member and an inner member extending downwardly from the folded-over upper edge of the said, outer member, and said cover also having a bar connected at its ends with the lower edge of said inner member and crossing said opening at one side of the center thereof.
2. A mucilage stand comprising a receptacle, a cover therefor having a central opening and a brush having a handle and a lid for said opening, said cover'having a peripheral edge portion to engage the receptacle and at said opening having a double-flange comprising an upwardly extending outer member and an inner member extending from the folded-over upper edge of said outer member downwardly below said outer member and the adjacent portion of the top of said cover and having integrally therewith a barwhich crosses said opening at one side of the center thereof.
3. A mucilage stand comprising a receptacle, a cover therefor having a central opening and a brush having a handle and a lid for said opening, said cover having a peripheral edge portion to engage the receptacle and at said opening having a doubleflange comprising an upwardly extending" outer member and an inner member extending from the folded-over upper edge of said outer member downwardly below said outer member and the adjacent portion of the top of said cover and being separated by an annular space from the adjacent surfaces of said inner member and said portion of said cover.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 8th day of September, A. D. 1920.
