WILLIAM A. ZEIDLER AND MAX L. FERENTZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHANGEABLE ADVERTISING-SIGN.
Application filed August 23, 1919. Serial No. 319,322.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. ZEIDLER and Max L. FERENTZ, citizens of the United States, and residents. of the city of New York, county of Bronx, and county of Kings, respectively, State of New York, have made a new and useful Improvement in Changeable Advertising-Signs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a sign on which any of a number of legends may be shown according to the volition of the operator, so that by a mere turning of rollers, a great variety of signs may be displayed.
A further object is to provide a sign which will always be neat, clean, attractive and fresh and vto repair and not liable to get out of adjustment.
These and other objects are accomplished by our invention, one embodiment of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth.
For a more particular description of our invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our improved sign.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
The remaining figures show an adjustable element of the sign, Fig. 3 being a front view, Fig. 4 a longitudinal section, Fig. 5 an end elevation, and Fig. 6 a cross section.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters, designate similar parts.
Our improved sign 1 is composed of a back 2 which is preferably made solid and may be made of wood or any other suitable material, and from this back extends a top 3, a bottom 1; and a number of metal partitions 5, which are spaced at convenient distances, and the top and bottom and partitions are covered by a front 6 which has a number of openings 7 whichare open over the spaces between the partitions 5 so as to receive boxes 8, in which the changeable signs are mounted.
It will be understood that the spaces between the partitions 5 are open at the ends so that the boxes 8 may be slid into or out of the same, and a wrench may also be inserted so as to engage the end of the rollers which will be described below, and turn the same.
Each box 8 is provided with a bottom 9, sides 10 and ends 11. One side 10 has a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma 31, 1,921.
In the preferred embodiment of our invention, one of the ends 11 is integral with the base 9 and the other is held thereto by means of small screws 19 which enter holes in a small flange which extends upwardly from the base 9.
Both the ends 11 have suitable registering openings which receive two parallel spindles 20 on which are mounted rollers 21 which carry a fabric sign 22 which runs from one roller to the other and over the plate 16 and is stretched tight over the same.
In the embodiment of our invention which is shown, we provide each roller 21 with a spring 23 which prevents too free a turning of the roller and so causes the fabric 22 to remain tight under all conditions of service. Each spindle 20 preferably ha a conical end and near this end a cross bar 24-, by means of which it may be turned through a wrench, not shown, which its the end of the spindle and has a recess or recesses adapted to engage the bar 24-.
In the embodiment of our invention shown, a cross partition 25 runs from near the top to the bottom, and over this partition, the front 6 is solid, the object being to make the opening 7 long on the left and short on the right so that an article may be designated at the left and its price at the right. This may be varied at the option of the person designing the apparatus although the preferred embodiment is as shown.
The front 6 may be given any suitable finish, but is preferably made out of enameled sheet iron so that it may be kept clean with a damp cloth which passes over it and through the openings 7 and on to the glass fronts 15 so that the sign may be kept clean and clear at all times, and always present a fresh and attractive appearance. Furthermore, the legends on the sign may be changed at will by simply using the wrench, as above indicated, so as to turn therollers one way or the other, according to the designation which is to appear.
IVhile we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention, it is obvious that it is not restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures that come within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a sign with a top and bottom, and a number of transverse partitions, a cover with the openings registering with the spaces between said partitions, removable boxes with glass fronts adapted to be inserted in the spaces between said partitions and opposite said openings, changeable signs in said boxes and means for shifting said signs.
2. In a device of the class described, a sign with a top and bottom, and a number of transverse partitions, movable boxes between the transverse partitions, a cover with the openings registering with the spaces between said partitions, changeable signs in said boxes and means for shifting said igns.
3. In a device of the class described, a front with a perforation, parallel partitions adjacent to said front and behind the same and means for supporting said partitions, a box with a changeable roller sign adapted to enter the space back of said front and between said partitions and a springon a side of said box for holding the same in place.
4. In a device of the class described, a back with a top and bottom secured thereto and transversely disposed partitions parallel with the top and bottom, a longitudinal partition intersecting the other partitions and a front with openings registering with the spaces between the partitions and a series of boxes with movable signs mounted therein fitting in the spaces between the partitions so that the signs register with the openings in the front.
