siren stares SCOTT M. ABBOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANTA' ADJUSTABLE BOOKMARK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented M 31 1g21 Application filed October 13, 1919. Serial No. 330,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SooTT M. ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bookmarks, of which the-following is a specification. I V
The object of this invention is to provide an improved book-mark, which will combine physical flexibility as well as flexibility, figuratively speaking, in its being so readily conformable to various types of books and ways in which the same are used.
More specifically, the invention has for its object the provision of a book-markwhieh is particularly designed for and adapted to be used with the Holy Bible, and such guides used in the study thereof as that work which is known as Christian Science cmd HcaZth used by Christian Scientists, wherein several correlated portions of the book are arranged in such manner, or: that when read consecutively they form ,what might be termed a more or less complete exposition ofv a par- 1 Y ticular subject.
A further object of the invention is to provide a book-mark comprising means removably attached tothe opposite sides of the binding, yielding means extending between the corresponding end portions of sald first means, and removable elements yield ingly engaging and supported by said yielding means and adapted to be positioned between the pages of a book, and sa1d lastnamed means being provided with flexlble arms hingedly connected thereto, and'prefen ably extending to the laterally outer edge portion of the leaves of the book and supporting tabs, which may in turn be provided with any desired numerals, letters, or the like. Y
With these andother objects in view, the
invention comprises details of construction and a method of operation hereinafter fully described when readin conjunction with the accompanying drawings, inwhichFigure 1 is a perspective view of a book, wlth wh1ch is associated. the preferred embod ment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspect ve view of the-rear portion of a book so equipped; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the ele ments adapted to-be attached to the sides of the book-cover; Fig. 4 is aplan view of one of the book-marking elements complete;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the free end portion of one of theflexible marker-arms, showing the method of attachng the numbered tabs thereto; and Fig. 6 1s a fragmentary plan'viewof one'end of a modified form of marker element.
Referring to the drawings, a book is shown as comprising oppositely positioned side-boards 1 and 2,.connected at their rear portions by an integral'back 3, while between said boards are positioned the usual leaves 4. 'An elongated stripe of suitable material, and being provided at its opposite ends with laterally and reversely curved portions 6, is adapted .to he slid longitudinally from the outer freeedge to the rearmost porpo on of each of the binding boards 2 of the o'ok.
, These'strips are furthermore prov ded upon their looped portions with pins 7, surrounding which are revolubly mounte ed pulley-wheels 8, while between the wheels,
located at each endiof the backing 3 of the book, a resilient i member, such' asa-small rubber-band 9, is extended.
When a given portion of the book is to be marked for: instantly relocating the same,
one of the markerunits, shown inFigs. .4:
and 5, is placedb'etween theleaves, which latter'upon separating exposes to the reader the portion in which he is interested. 7
These elements each comprise an elona gated flexible strip 10 of very. thin material,,provided in their lower end portion with an inverted U-shaped recess ll 'adapted to" receive and partially surround one of the side portions of the lower of the rub-1 ber-bands-9. .The-upperend portion of said member "is provided with an aperture 12,
which preferably has one lateral edge 18 diagonally positioned, said last-named aperture being adapted toreceive and partially surround one side portion of the'up'per of the rubber-bands 9, and by the arrangement of the apertured edge portion 13 to resist purely accidental dislodgment of the marker from between'the leaves of the book.
Each of the elements 10 is furthermore provided. ata predetermined position between its end portions. with anelongated aperture 14, through which extends, and is.
reversely bent, one edge portionv 15 of a hinge member, which has its opposite end portionprovided with spaced parallel extensions lG .adapteolto be bent laterally in the same direction'as'the portion 15, and reversely toward the same in order to cooperate with said other portion, to rigidly grip the marker member. Furthermore, between the spaced cars 16, there extends a relatively fine pin 17, around which is slidably mounted a hinge member 18, to the free end portion of which is secured a preferably very thin flexible markenarm 19, which extends laterally outwardly toward the free edge portions of the leaves of the book when the marker as a whole is in normal operative position.
The faces of the outer end portion of each marker-arm 19 are covered by a folded sec tion of metal comprising oppositely posi: tioned side portions 20 and 21. The side 21 is provided near its free end with oppositely positioned cu -out portions 22, and at its extreme end with laterally outwardly extending arms 23, which are adapted to be bent in opposite directions and thence toward each other around the adjacent portion of the arm 19, while the side portion 20 of this folded member is provided atits end portion with oppositely extending ears 24, which are similarly bent in opposite directions and thence toward each other surrounding the adjacent portion of the arm 19, andterminating in the cut-out portions 22, and with their outer exposed surfaces flush with the corresponding surface of the side 21 of the saidmember. These tabs may be positively secured in their desired position by means of small rivets 25, or the like, passing through the tab and the arm 19, and it is to be noted that the marker-arms are hingedly positioned upon the respective sup porting members 10 of a series in such different consecutive positions as to make their progress numerically from one end toward the other of the said members.
One or both of the sides 20 and 21 of the marker-arm or tab may be provided with numerals, letters, or other suitable indicia, such for instance as that illustrated, for the purpose of indicating the sequence with which the portions of the reading-matter of a book are to be located. Also it has been found greatly to the advantage of the user of such a marker to provide the looped portions 6 of each of the members 5 with bands 26 of any suitable material, which same 0pcrates to lessen the chance of the members 5 accidentally shifting with respect to the 27 having a restricted opening 28 in one side portion of said member, instead of in the end itself as is true with that form of the device shown in Fig. 4.
