Description

Feb. 5, 1929. 1,700,846
B. KLEIN V BOOKMARK Filed Sept. 7. 1926 gizi? Patented Feb. 5, 1929.
sitiran sraras BENJAMIN KLEIN, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
BOOKMARK.
Application filed September 7, 1926. Serial No. 134,861.
This invention relates to book-marks and contemplates a device of the above character of novel substantial construction.
rlfhe object of the invention being` to provide a book-mark havingI means whereby the device may be clamped to the book and carried thereby. rEhe device is also collapsible which permits the marking` means to follow down in the topmost page as they are read and turned successively.
Features of the device are found in a base plate having an upturned slotted flange at its front end and a clamping spring finger cut from the body of the said plate. A spring pressed marker plate may be hinged to a slotted cross bar which may be connected by toggle levers to the slotted f'lange of the base plate, the Whole constituting an inexpensive sheet metal structure Which may be ornamented if desired.
The invention is adapted for effective use in all work and for all uses and under al conditions in which a book-mark can be employed and in order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described more fully in detail with reference to the accompanying` drawings illustrating` a preferred embodiment thereof, in which Fig. 1, shows a book in end elevation With my improved book-mark attached.
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the book mark removed from the book.
Fig. 3, is a secti-onal side elevation on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4., is a face view of the book mark with the parts separated.
Refer-ring to the drawings I'show a book 10, to which my improved book mark 11 is clamped by a base plate 12 engaging the outside of one wing of the cover 13 and a spring,` tongue or finger 14- engaging the inner side of said wing. a
The improved book mark is preferably constructed or formed from spring sheet metal and may comprise a marker plate 15 hinged at 1G to a cross plate 17 provided With end sleeves 18. The marker plate 15, is alsoprovided with a sleeve 19 cut. out at its midlength to receive a coiled spring 20. A pintle pin 21 is passed through the sleeves and through the coils of the spring to retain the parts in operative relation.
rlfhe cross plate 17 is provided with longitudinally extending slots 22 through which pins 23 are passed to slidably connect the upper ends of tok-ggle levers 2%, which are crossed and held together bya pivot pin 25 and at their lower ends said levers are provided with backwardly orinwardly directed pins 26, which pass freely through slots 27, formed in an upturned fiange 28 formed with the base plate 12.
The toggle levers 2/1 and associated parts constitute in effecta a collapsible frame by which the marker plate 15 is supported. ,I
in operation, my improved device may be clamped to the lower side wing of a book cover as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and as the reading` continues the spring 2.0 normally urging the mark plate 15 down around on its pivot, causes it to gently snap downon the uppermost pages as the pages are successively turned back and When the book is closed, the marker plate will remain in the book to enable the reader to quickly find the page at which he previously had discontinued reading. I
rl`he book-mark automatically sinks as the unread portion of the book diminishes. In case a very heavy volume, it may be secured anywheres in the unread portion of the book instead of being secured on the book cover. My improved book-mark is not only useful in usual reading` of books but also in certain classes of office work like in bookkeeping where several such book-marks may be inserted in one book and left to mark desired locations in the same.
The terms and expressions employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, andl have no intention. in the use of such terms and expressions, of excluding; of any mechanical equivalents of the features shown and described, or portions thereof, but recognize that various structural modifications are possible within the scope of the invention claimed.
lVhat I claim as new is:
In a book mark of the class described, a marker plate with a hinge sleeve formed in the center thereof., having a cut out portion: a cross plate adjacent to said marker plate with hinge sleeves on the upper ends of the same to cooperate with the sleeve on the marker plat-e and two long'itudinal slots at the two lower ends thereof; a hinge pintle through said sleeves.I a coil spring around said pintle in said cut out portion of the sleeve of the marker plate to urge said marker wwwand said cross Plates towards each other; a base plate adapted to be secured on the unread portion of the book having an upstanding flange With tWo longitudinal slots adjacent to the two ends thereof; tWo crossed toggle levers With inwardly Pointing pins at their ends slidably engaging said four slots,
and a pin at the orossing of the two levers around Which said levers are rockab'le.
Signed at NeW York, in the county of New 10 York, and State of New York, this 19th day of August, A. D. 1926.
