Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 31, 1921.
' Application flled' Augusta, 1920. Serial No. 400,587.
Be it known that I, ELmo'r'r M. STORY, a citizen of the United States, residingv at Braintree in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Im the following is a specification.
This invention relates pult type, adapted to be held by one hand and provided with an elastic strip adapted otherhandand released to project an arrow inserted in the guide.
The invention has for its a toy of this character, of simple and relatively inexpensive construction, adapted to be used eifectively. by children.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim. a
Of the accompanying drawings forming a I part of this specification,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head portion of a toy embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the arrow portion.
Fig. 3 shows the head portion in section, of-the arrow engaged with the elastic strip.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of thefigures.
The hand piece of my improved toy in- .jcludes a head 12, having a horizontally extended arrowguide 13, and a handle 14 fixed 'to the head, the handle being substantially perpendicular'to the ide 13.
To the head 12 are fixe preferably by staples 15, theends of an elastic looped strip 16, preferably of elastic rubber," slmilar to that used in making ordinary rubber bands, the fixed ends of the strip being adjacent to one end portion of the guide 13.
The head has relatively wide vertical side faces 17, and relatively narrow vertical end faces 18, so that the head is .of enerally oblong form, the ide 13 beingt e wallof'a horizontal circlfi a r hole bored in the head, from one end face 18 to the other, between thes'ide faces 17.
The toy ing a head 19, and a s n r shaf provements in Toys, of which to a toy of the cataarrow guide and-an; to be stretched by the,
object to provide the contraction of'sai'd strip,
vertical side faces, and rel also comprises -an arrow, includ- The diameter of the guide 13 is considerably greater than that of the shaft 20, so
that the arrow may have a lateral movement A I of-considerable amplitude in the guide. Thelower adapts horizontally, Fig. 3, which portion of the guide forms a rest,
as indicated by full lines in represents the arrow retracted and held in position to elongate the strip 16, 80"
so that upon the release of the strip and arrow, the latter is projected from the guide by the contraction of the strip.
The rest formed b the lower portion of the guide is adapted erable portion of the length of the arrow, and initially guide the latter in ahorizontal path, or a path which is substantially at right angles with the major axis of the handle. row inthe guide enables the user to variously incline the arrow, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that the initial path offlight of the arrow may be variously inclined relatively to the handle.
I claim:
A toy comprising a hand piece -including a head having a. horizontally extended arrow-guide and substantially perpendicular to the said ide, and an elastic looped stripvfixed at its ends to the head adjacent to one end portion of said (guide, and an'arrow including a to have a lateral movement of 8 5 shaft forme considerable amplitude in the guide, and adapted to be projected from the latter by tion of the guide forming. a rest adapted to support and guide the arrow horizontally and the lateral movability of the arrow in theguide permitting various inclinations of the arrow relatively to said rest, the said headbeing a block having relatively wide vertical end faces, and the said guide bein the wall of a horizontal circular hole bore in the block from one end face to the other,
between the side faces.
